I didn't include this quote in my Discussion Post, I've just carried around with me for few days. Today is the 3rd Anniversary of the house fire. It's always going to be a time of contemplation not only of things lost but on good times.

Included in those memories are all the #Pemberlittens who sent me books to rebuild my library. That kindness still feels me with joy.

#JaneAustenThenAndNow

Crinoline_Laphroaig And now it's time to get on with my day. While it's fine to look back, wallowing isn't healthy or productive. Life has moved on and it's good. 2w

Crinoline_Laphroaig 1️⃣ According to Goodreads this is my 8th reading. Mostly I read in print. A couple of busy days I switched to beautifully read Juliet Stevenson audio book.

I must confess, on first reading as a young woman it didn't speak to me the way that Pride and Prejudice did. 30 years later I revisited after reading on Modern Mrs Darcy Blog https://modernmrsdarcy.com/ that it was a perfect fall read. My older eyes saw its beauty.⬇️
3w
Crinoline_Laphroaig 2️⃣ I love the Crofts, they're just running around the countryside and living their best lives. Sir Walter, Elizabeth, and Mary are all horrible so they as a group are my worst.

3️⃣ The Letter! I swoon every time.

4️⃣ Obviously the letter but also “But I hate to hear you talking so, like a fine gentleman, and as if women were all fine ladies, instead of rational creatures. We none of us expect to be in smooth water all our days.”⬇️

3w
Crinoline_Laphroaig 5️⃣ You know it's going to be Northanger Abbey for me. I'll take any opportunity to run into Henry Tilney. 6️⃣ Sir Walter is definitely vainest. He is a bit more present, instead of retreating to the library like Mr. Bennet. But even when he's there he's always going to say something horrible. 7️⃣ Retire to the country. I need a garden. 8️⃣ Continue to be surprised at the ages of characters that I used to think of as ‘old‘. Mrs. Croft is 38.⬇️

Ch. 24 (Vol II, Ch XII) Conclusion. "She gloried in being a sailor‘s wife, but she must pay the tax of quick alarm for belonging to that profession which is, if possible, more distinguished in its domestic virtues than in its national importance. THE END."

Read the final pages on the Book Porch with rain, cozy blanket, & a wee whiskey. Such a joy to reread a chapter a day.

Chapter 22 (Volume II, Chapter 10): "I hope you do not think I am so illiberal as to want every man to have the same objects and pleasures as myself. I have a great value for Benwick; and when one can but get him to talk, he has plenty to say. His reading has done him no harm, for he has fought as well as read." - Persuasion

Chapter 20 (Volume II, Chapter 8.) “You were a good while at Lyme, I think?”

Seaside is such a big part of Persuasion's storyline. Has me thinking about that time I carried The Lonely Shore: Jane Austen and the Sea by Julia Fry with me on vacation just so I could read on the beach.

Because it was a gift I was extra careful not to get it wet or full of sand. 🌊

Ch19 (Vol II, Ch 7) "While Admiral Croft was taking this walk with Anne, and expressing his wish of getting Captain Wentworth to Bath, Captain Wentworth was already on his way thither. Before Mrs. Croft had written, he was arrived; and the very next time Anne walked out, she saw him."

November walk inspired by yesterday's chapter. Had our first hard freeze in the morning. Afternoon was perfect for wearing my new Irish sweater and hat. Laphroaig scarf found awhile back on Ebay. I'm slowly replacing things like these that I lost in house fire. Love how they match this Persuasion.

#Pemberlittens Listening to Audio because of life and it's Juliet Stevenson. Then I read footnotes in the Annotated.

"In all her novels but her first, Northanger Abbey, there is a young man with great surface charm and attractiveness who tempts the heroine to a degree. The previous four—Willoughby, Wickham, Henry Crawford, and Frank Churchill—all prove untrustworthy in some respect, though in varying degrees."

Okay, Litsy. I need your advice. I started reading this version of Persuasion because I wanted to reread the book and thought the annotated version might be fun. There is literally a full page of notes opposite each page of text. Does a person really need that much trivia in their brain? Should I ditch this for one of my other editions or tough it out?

Redwritinghood Maybe just skim the notes? 6y
REPollock I would not want that much extra information unless I was writing a report on the book. 😐 6y

I had to leave work early because of a terrible migraine, but after ice and pain meds, I feel well enough to read. I had planned on the tagged book, but I‘m intimidated by the quantity of annotations - a full page of notes for each page of text! So, I think I‘m going to try a new-to-me romance author to see if that‘s more the speed my still aching head can handle. 🤞🏻

Crazeedi @DGRachel migraines are debilitating, so sorry you have to deal with them. I hope you find a treatment that helps, hugs❤❤ 6y
Graciouswarriorlibrarian Feel better and sending hugs! 6y
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @DGRachel oh no!! I‘m sorry! Mine was hurting when I got up, but usually I have an aura too... I have fioricet, but it doesn‘t do much.. 🤯 6y
DGRachel @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks Fioricet has never done much for pain, but it used to help stop auras if I took it as soon as one started. I took one when I got home from work, so it did help me sleep for a couple of hours. 6y
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @DGRachel I‘m worried about stopping the topamax.. I‘ve been on it for so long... I hope you feel better and get some rest ❤️ 6y

#FebruaryFeels #LongWait

It was a long wait for Anne Elliot & Captain Frederick Wentworth but the wait & his almost broken heart & pierced soul led to the letter to rule all letters. (Swoon 💜)

ralexist My favorite Austen! I recently did a "re-read" listening to it as an audiobook. I loved revisiting the story in a different format ? 6y
DebinHawaii @ralexist Yes! I listened to the Greta Scacchi narrated version a couple of years ago & loved it. I keep hoping Rosamund Pike does one. I love her Pride and Prejudice & Sense and Sensibility narrations. 6y

#QuotsyDec17 #letters 📃🖋Jane Austen's books are full of letters and quotes about them, but I think 'the' letter has to be Captain Wentworth's in Persuasion. If you have never read it, you must even for that letter alone. ❤️I love these two quotes about Anne's anticipation of reading it and on the after effects of reading such a letter. #janeaustenknowsall

Kalalalatja Love love love love Wentworth's letter #swoon ❤️❤️❤️❤️ 8y
benchley1 Oh That letter...I swoon everytime...and hear it in Juliet Stevenson voice... 8y
SandyW Now I'm going to have to read Persuasion again. What a hardship. 😜 8y

DGRachel Yes! I ❤️ The Letter. @Kalalalatja #swoon is right! 8y
batsy Oh yes! Now you're making me want to read Persuasion again! 😍 8y
DebinHawaii @Kalalalatja @benchley1 @SandyW @DGRachel @batsy Maybe a Persuasion buddy read in 2018? 😆📚❤️ 8y
benchley1 @DebinHawaii I would be in. I'm always rereading or listening to Jane Austen, Harry Potter, or Dame Agatha 8y
SandyW @DebinHawaii @Kalalalatja @benchley1 @DGRachel @batsy I could be up for that. It would be my first. 8y
Kalalalatja I'm in! I have read it so many times, so for once I might be able to pace myself a bit with a buddy read, instead of reading the book all at once 😄 8y
DGRachel @DebinHawaii @Kalalalatja @benchley1 @SandyW @batsy I‘m always up for a reread, but I can‘t promise not to read ahead. I tend to get swept away by the story. 😊 8y
batsy I'm cool for this, as well! Always game for an Austen reread 😊 but yes, I have difficulty with pacing as well 😆 8y
benchley1 Maybe with a buddy read we'll have to slow down the reading pace and saviour...I read it like I eat popcorn 8y
DebinHawaii @Kalalalatja @benchley1 @SandyW @DGRachel @batsy I'm happy you guys are interested! I've not organized a buddy read before but would be happy to try. Would love opinions on how/how much you'd like to read there are 24 chapters so we could do 4,5,or 6 a week, or one a day...Also timing...January too soon? Feb for romance? Later on? We probably can't make it perfect for everyone but would love to make it fit as much as possible. 8y
Kalalalatja I haven't participated in a buddy read before, so I'm completely inexperienced as well 😄 but I can say, I don't have any preferences for when to read it, but maybe Feb, if there are some who need to buy/borrow it first? 😊 8y
DGRachel I think the last one I did for Persuasion was a chapter a day. February sounds great! 8y
SandyW Newb here. I'm very flexible and could probably make any time work, but January is my quietest month. I think 6 chapters a week over 4 weeks sounds reasonable. (I am happy to defer to group consensus, but 1 ch/wk would be too slow for me.) 8y
benchley1 I have no time preferences. I've got the book, ebook, and audio... 8y
batsy I already have my copy, so can start anytime as well. I'm open to any month 👍 I like @DGRachel's idea of a chapter a day, but if that's too much then 24 chapters over a month sounds good 😊 @Kalalalatja @benchley1 @SandyW 8y
SandyW I can do a chapter a day... I could even commit to something like the entire book over a weekend, but that might be too much for everyone else... 8y
