Miracle and Other Christmas Stories
Miracle and Other Christmas Stories | Connie Willis
15 posts | 17 read | 7 to read
The winner of multiple Hugo and Nebula Awards, Connie Willis capture the timeless essence of generosity and goodwill in this magical collection if Christmas stories. These eight tales-two of which have never before been published-boldly reimagine the stories of Christmas while celebrating the power of love and compassion. This enchanting treasury includes: "Miracle," in which a young woman's carefully devised plans to find romance go awry when her guardian angel shows her the true meaning of love "In Coppelius's Toyshop," where a jaded narcissist finds himself trapped in a crowded toy store at Christmastime "Epiphany," in which three modern-day wisemen embark on a quest unlike any they've ever experienced "Inn," where a choir singer gives shelter to a homeless man and his pregnant wife-only to learn later that there's much more to the couple than meets the eye And more From the Paperback edition.

Got my husband hooked on the Oxford Time Travel series and found this while picking up the next one from the library for him. A nice mix of realism and fantasy/sci-fi, and most of the short stories felt like they had a satisfying ending (even if not everything was resolved). My favorite was the first story, with the Ghost of Christmas Present (as in gift).

A good way to spend a day reading and recovering after Christmas travels!

I finished this last night. I enjoy Connie Willis but this collection of stories is kind of uneven. My favorite was "Inn" It was very relevant to today, even though is was written in 1993. (21 points) #HolidayRead #WinterGames #ReadNosedReindeer

So tomorrow is my birthday, and one of my coworkers remembered! He brought me a book, wrapped in book paper, which I opened in the bookstore where we work. How perfect is that?? 😍📦📚
Plus it‘s super awesome that he was paying attention and noticed I‘d been eyeballing this signed Connie Willis a few months back. I thought a customer must‘ve snagged it... I didn‘t realize it was him! 🙂

I read this for an online book club discussion next week, and I‘m so glad I did! I wasn‘t familiar with the author but loved her no-nonsense writing style and dry humor. Favorites were “Inn”, “Adaptation” and “Epiphany”, but I enjoyed them all! 4.5/5⭐️

.5⭐️ for the author‘s inclusion of her Top 12 Christmas reads and her Top 12 Christmas movies. 😉😍🤣

NOTE: These stories all have sci-fi elements.

Currently reading this holiday sci-fi anthology for an upcoming book club discussion online. “Miracle”, the first story, is a hoot but also really makes you think! 🎄🎄🎄

ScientistSam I love Connie Willis. Would you recommend this? 6y
robinb @ScientistSam I‘m currently on the fifth story out of nine, and I‘m enjoying them. The first two stories, so far, have been my favorites. This is my first book by Willis, but I‘m enjoying her writing...dry humor but also some depth to it. 😊 If you like her you‘d probably like this...I haven‘t read anything else of hers to compare it to. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 6y

Light collection of Christmas and holiday stories from an SFF master. My faves: “Adaptation,” which pulls in Characters You May Know from Dickens, and “Inn,” a churchwoman‘s dilemma about unexpected visitors with a long way to go. Willis even recommends her fave Christmas movies / reads at the end of the book. Fun pieces to dip into over Christmas!

Melissa_J I have the Little People nativity set, too 😊 7y

I really loved this charming collection of Christmas stories. A broad variety of genre and perspectives on the season, with a lot of humor and just the perfect blend of sentiment and sharpness. I am keeping my #TBR planning really low this month since I have a lot of time off and want to see where that takes me. But aside from my #lmpbc #readersgonnaread and #travellingbook I want to read this holiday short story collection I got from Libby which is supposedly hilarious. #reindeerreads @Jess7

2017 is my year of Connie Willis. I just discovered her sci fi/fantasy/time travel novels this year and then I heard that she loves Christmas and writes Christmas stories. I know it‘s only November but I needed some Christmas cheer. I don‘t usually like short stories but these were wonderful. Christmas cozies with a little mystery and fantasy thrown in. A few nods to Christie, Dickens and the like too. Uplifting stuff!

A fantastic and well-edited collection of specfic Christmas stories. I loved some of the stories more than others, but there was a good variety between the stories, with some leaning more to magic realism and others to horror and others to scifi. Willis also compiled lists of her favourite Christmas stories and movies, so I've added a few to my list for next year. Definitely recommend.
