MEG: Primal Waters | Steve Alten

It was the apex predator of all time, the most fearsome creature that ever lived -- a 70-foot, 70,000 pound Great White shark. Hundreds of 7-inch serrated teeth filled jaws that could swallow an elephant whole. It could sense its prey miles away, inhaling its scent as it registered the beat of its fluttering heart, and if you ever came close enough to see the monster...it was already too late. Eighteen years have passed since Jonas Taylor last crossed paths with carcharodon Megalodon. Now a middle-aged father of two, he is overwhelmed by mountains of bills and the daily strife of raising a family. But life is about to change. A Hollywood television producer wants Jonas to join his new survival series: Daredevils. For the next six weeks, two teams of crazy daredevils on a South Pacific Ocean voyage will try to outperform one another in front of the cameras. Jonas needs the money, and the job of doing the color commentary seems easy enough. But behind the scenes, someone else is pulling the strings. And before it's over, Jonas will again come face to face with the most dangerous creatures ever to stalk the Earth.

This book is recommended if you just like good fun dumb in a book. The only complaint I would have is how he had me almost disliking one of the main characters. I enjoyed the amount of villains in his book and just had fun checking out and just enjoying the ride it gave.

As usual, I‘ve read my #doublespin selection first this month.
I hate to love this series. I am all about action heavy creature books and these do not disappoint in that way. I‘m not looking for great literature here, just a fun scary time. And that‘s what I got. But the sexism. 😤

I‘m having a very terrible time focusing and keeping my anxiety at bay during this quarantine. I‘m hoping this will make me feel better, I honestly LOVED The Meg and I also loved The Loch. Hope y‘all are doing better than I am.

Any suggestions for similar type books I would appreciate.

TEArificbooks Not a sea monster but I liked 5y
Christine Anxiety is not as much of an issue for me, but obsessive news-following (and related inability to focus on books) is. 😕 Wishing us both more moments of escape into reading! ❤️ 5y

So i‘m new to posting books and making reviews, but it‘s 2020 so I figured i‘d give it a try! So the book i‘m most excited for is, Red Dragon. I‘ve always saved myself from watching Hannibal movies until I was able to read the books in order. I‘m sorry if the books are cut off please do forgive me for the noob start. But yeah this is my first January haul. I should add that i‘m big into horror, so that‘s what most of my picks are. Meow~

I could not put this action packed book down. It is my favorite in the series so far. There is major potential for this to be a good movie sequel. And Jason Stratham did a fantastic job embodying his character.

TheBookStacker I think this is the one I am about to start in the series. Is it the 3rd one? 5y
TEArificbooks @TheBookStacker yes it is the third one 5y
TheBookStacker I didn‘t much like Trench so I took a break and read the loch which I loved and now I am starting back up in the series. Especially because I know there‘s a crossover between Meg and Loch later in the series! 5y
TEArificbooks @TheBookStacker I didn‘t know about the cross over, I will have to read that one too. I also didn‘t like the trench much. I thought Celeste was such a horrid person her background info distracted from the book and was unnecessary. But I am very glad I read book 3. 5y

I didn't enjoy this one as much as The Meg. The story was convoluted and very drawn out and not nearly as heart pounding as the first book in the series. I listened to the audio, and I didn't care for the narrator's voice, though he did a fine enough job overall.

I'm at just over 13 hours for the #24B4Monday. I was hoping to get to 16 today, but that's not looking likely.

Karkar I just started the first one yesterday. 6y
Traci1 @Karkar I liked the first one a lot. It's a ton of good toothy fun. 6y
Andrew65 13 hours is still a great time, well done. 🙌👍👏 6y
TK421 I think the first book is still the best one of the series. I liked Primal Waters more than The Trench, but the next couple books are better. 6y
Traci1 @TK421 I didn't have access to a library copy of The Trench, and I'd heard it wasn't that great, so I ended up skipping to this one. I'll probably end up reading the next one at least. 6y

Question for anyone who's read these books. Do you have to read them all in order? I have read The Meg, book one. I don't have library access to The Trench, book two, but this one (book 3) is available to borrow from Hoopla. I'd rather not buy The Trench as I've heard it's not as good.

Can I skip it and still enjoy the story? Or should I just cave and buy it?

BookishTrish I think you can skip it. Just Google the plot ..: 6y

I love me some giant, killer sharks! I really enjoyed this audio book. The third in the series, I thought it was much better than The Trench. Taking place 20 years after the second book, Primal Waters gives us more sharks than ever before, mixed with an ill fated daredevil reality show filmed on a pirate ship in the Pacific. I'm ready for book 4!

CocoReads I‘ve got to start reading these. Love me some killer sharks! 6y

This one opens eighteen years after the sequel ends- the characters are older (but not really any wiser!) and once again giant sharks are back out of the deep sea! Plenty of #shark fun- plus a reality show, a villain with a grudge- it all adds up to a fast and fun read!!🦈🦈🦈🦈🦈

I absolutely loved this one soooo much character growth and science and espionage and betrayal and suspense and death by shark. Ahhh good times! I had to continually tell the characters to hang in there because it was pretty bleak for a while! Instantly started book 4!

Not nearly as great as the first two books of the series. The pacing is much slower and drawn out, the actions bits (while interesting) start to feel a bit stale and unimaginative, and the family drama was mildly irritating. It's also got more clichés than ever & I just didn't like it as much as the others. It wasn't terrible, but rather average. Good place for a series break. 3/5.

While I feel the whole "18 years later" thing will affect some of the plot quality, the writing still holds up well. The author manages to bring up information mentioned in previous books (I.e.: Marianna Trench, the biology of Megalodon hunting/copulating/terrifying things, etc.) with fresh descriptions and intriguing introductions. So far, not bad at all! ~50 pages in.

This takes place 18 years after the second book. I'm not entirely sure how I feel about this... Especially since there are two (or three) more books in the series.

This is probably my least favorite of the Meg series, but it's still a great book. This book is set many years after the second. The storyline is very believable, and again the author creates villains that you really find yourself hating.

If one's life is a series of moments, then it is the random ones, the events we never see coming, that often forge the most lasting impressions.
