The Hunger
The Hunger | Alma Katsu
The Hunger is a tense and gripping reimagining of one of America's most fascinating historical moments: the Donner Party with a supernatural twist. Evil is invisible, and it is everywhere. Tamsen Donner must be a witch. That is the only way to explain the series of misfortunes that have plagued the wagon train known as the Donner Party. Depleted rations, bitter quarrels, and the mysterious death of a little boy have driven the pioneers to the brink of madness. They cannot escape the feeling that someone--or something--is stalking them. Whether it was a curse from the beautiful Tamsen, the choice to follow a disastrous experimental route West, or just plain bad luck--the 90 men, women, and children of the Donner Party are at the brink of one of the deadliest and most disastrous western adventures in American history. While the ill-fated group struggles to survive in the treacherous mountain conditions--searing heat that turns the sand into bubbling stew; snows that freeze the oxen where they stand--evil begins to grow around them, and within them. As members of the party begin to disappear, they must ask themselves "What if there is something waiting in the mountains? Something disturbing and diseased...and very hungry?" Effortlessly combining the supernatural and the historical, The Hunger is an eerie, thrilling look at the volatility of human nature, pushed to its breaking point.

This book started a little slow for me, but once it picks up you're in for a wild ride.

You will be creeped out, grossed out, angry, sad, and unable to stop reading until you see how it all ends. This is a fictionalized story of the Donner Party that will make your skin crawl even more than the true events it's based on.

Definite recommend for horror fans.

Do you dare attempt a journey through the pages as the hungry ones stalk you?

I liked this fictional account of an actual event, the Donner Party and their ill fated crossing of the Sierra Nevadas in the winter of 1846. Here, the author imagines the cannibalism that occurred with an even more horrific twist. I liked the descriptions of life on a wagon train...amazing what people went through to seek out a better life for their families. A good slow burn horror novel #kittensoflitsy #catsoflitsy #petsoflitsy #klausthekitten

I devoured this book (no pun intended 😂). I wanted a dark historical fiction and this fit the bill. A darker version of the Donner party with a supernatural element.

Has anyone else read other books by this author? Are they all dark like this because I‘d be interested in reading more stories like this.

A reimagining of what happened to the Donner Party, with a twist. A slow burn, or maybe a slow freeze---the weather gets colder and colder as the novel progresses. Contending with Mother Nature is bad enough, contending with human nature is another thing entirely. 👇🏼

I just learned something about myself. Give me a familiar historically accurate fictionalized tale familiar to me, add a supernatural dark twist (in this case real friggin dark) and I‘ll stalk the crap outta social media to find all of your work. The Hunger takes us down the Donner Party road but it like, I can‘t tell you. This is my favorite book I‘ve read this year.

I just came back from a MixxedFit workout and I am starving and all my hunger wanted was a cookie. So I gave it two. Meanwhile I have just met Tamsen Donner (yes of that Donner Party) and her wagon train has been on the trail for 1.5 months, making very slow progress. I can‘t help wondering, how did people do this? Brave unknown (or little known) territory, for miles and miles and months and months?

RealLifeReading I tried these Neapolitan Joe-Joe‘s and they exceeded all my expectations! I thought nothing could beat a regular white cream (I never know, is it meant to be vanilla?) but this strawberry cream in the middle is delicious! I love that it‘s got little bits of freeze-dried strawberries in it

One of the best horror books I‘ve read this year: Katsu brings the Donner-Reed party tragedy to life while making the story very much her own. The supernatural threat closes in, never losing its creepiness. The novel explores not only what dehumanizes us (becoming monsters or reduced to meat), but more importantly, what makes us human: the need to love, seek redemption, and sacrifice for others.

If forced to describe Katsu's masterful novel, you could do worse than describing it as historical fiction with horror elements (think The Terror). Well drawn characters with interesting back stories & believable motivations. Last year I read mostly backlist books, so I now find myself catching up on a lot of 2018 titles. I completely understand why this ended up on numerous best of the year lists.

Readage I'm enjoying it. The eerie sense of things to come is keeping me hooked. Glad you enjoyed it! 5mo

The Hunger is a fiction book based on the Donner Party which was a group of pioneers that migrated to CA in wagon trains and were forced to cannibalism after being stranded in winter on mountains of the Sierra Nevada. Supernatural events were added to make this story super creepy. / The Non fiction book based on true events was horrifying and heartbreaking and a terrible tragedy in the history of the pioneers.

First 100 pages were slower than...well a wagon train heading west. I had hoped it would pick up speed but it was a long slog...like trudging through waist high snow. Didn‘t connect with characters who seemed indistinguishable from each other. Perhaps if I had read this in a couple days rather than 11, it wouldn‘t be an issue. This was a poor man‘s “The Terror” & didn‘t even come close to being scary despite the blurb from Stephen King. IMHO.😜

GhostStories Funny! I don‘t agree (I loved the book), but I like your description. I do get what you are saying about the characters: it‘s tackling the story of ninety people, so the volume of names can get overwhelming. I ended up making family trees and ordering them by wagon train order (!) 🤓 4mo

Alma Katsu‘s uses the real-life tragedy of the Donner Party and adds a supernatural twist to form an engaging horror novel that creates a real sense of dread and foreboding (but also sadness and pity) while at the same time making full use of the actual horrors that the pioneers encountered although the large cast of characters means that at times the horror is spread too thinly to be as effective as it could be.
