DAY 8 #ExpressYourself | For this prompt, I had to go with some of the best memoirs I‘ve read this year. I love reading about other people‘s experiences. These folks put themselves out there, and for that, I‘m grateful.

This book is great. Really hilarious, informative, empowering - just great. I was finally compelled to try it after seeing it on the Local Authors shelf at the library, had no idea Altman lives here in San Diego. Love her voice, written and speaking - the audio was terrific. The sheltered, decade-or-two younger me would have found this very TMI, but now I find it JtRAoI (just the right amount of information. There must be a better acronym 😂).
Calling all Gross Anatomy fans! Have you heard? Chelsea Handler is working on developing the book into a TV show! 😍
Not sure where I heard about this book but it seems like a good beach read 🤷♀️
Altman is a riot. On top of her first person experiences she hilariously details conversations with doctors, scientists, surgeons, at least one porn star, and a number of salon professionals to find out more about how and why our bodies function the way they do, as well as to dig into the truth about current practices to, well, make women look the way they wish, whether that's by bleaching their anus or paying for a labiaplasty.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Altman divulges the weird shit we deal with as women in a hilarious and informative manner. From body hair to tush functions to camouflaging the “toe,” she boldly discusses personal experiences and reservations while also conducting valid research. Think of a less boring Mary Roach (sorry; I like your books but they‘re dry as hell) with an blunt and dark sense of humor. I actually snorted, you guys. Loved every second!
I picked this up at the library today because it looks both hilarious and informative.
Body hair, vaginal odor, pooping, camel toe, sweat, and much, much more! Mara Altman explores the scientific, sociological, and individual aspects of the most taboo parts of the female body in a book so entertaining you won‘t realize you‘re learning stuff! Want to hear what scientists AND porn stars have to say about hemorrhoids? Mara Altman asks all the questions. A fun, gross book.
Mara Altman tackles many body topics about which we (and she) can be neurotic: body hair, hemorrhoids, vaginal odor, etc. She starts by discussing her own experiences in hilarious fashion, then proceeds to review the science, history, sociology and more of each topic. I just loved this book and laughed out loud in many places. It‘s terrific on audio.
Mara uses various bodily complaints (chin whiskers, PMS, hemorrhoids) to examine the parts of the female body and seek out truth and understanding. Lots of personal anecdotes mixed with research and feminist perspectives. I liked this a lot more than I expected. My fave section might have been about camel toe, it got deep. Great listen for a road trip (I listened on a drive from VA to NY).

You guys!!!! I can't even right now! I won a giveaway from Putnam Books on Instagram! I have never won a giveaway before. Ever! And it's a really fun one! Can't wait to read this book. It looks right up my alley! I'm tagging @PutnamKatie because I found Putnam books on IG after following her lovely account here on Litsy.
enjoying this one so far 📖
Waited so patiently for this and now I am going in.
A deeply satisfying read for all of us who have questioned either why our bodies seem to have betrayed us, or why we feel the need to alter our “bags of meat” to adhere to expectations, familial, cultural, personal, or otherwise.
