Atlas Shrugged (Anniversary)
Atlas Shrugged (Anniversary) | Ayn Rand
The astounding story of a man who said that he would stop the motor of the world - and did. Tremendous in scope, breathtaking in its suspense, "Atlas Shrugged" is unlike any other book you have ever read. It is a mystery story, not about the murder of a man's body, but about the murder - and rebirth - of man's spirit. With this acclaimed work and its immortal query "Who is John Galt?" Ayn Rand found the perfect artistic form to express her vision of existence. This is the book that made her not only one of the most popular novelists of our century, but also one of its most influential thinkers.

How can one add to the myriad reviews of the Rand classic? I don't think I can. This book took me 3 months to read. I don't regret one moment. I would not have 100% agreement with her philosophy of man. Her presentation of the necessity of free market capitalism is spot on. If I were to use one word for this book in light of today's world: prophetic. Read this.

GinaKButler It was fantastic! 12mo

I'm about 1/4 into this #chunkster. There is a meme/saying going around: "Make Orwell fiction again." I think the same can be said of Rand. Everything I'm seeing in this book has its reality in our current world to some degree. Scary.

I'm wondering if I should start this behemoth. My current reading time guess would be near 6-8 weeks. Who has read it? What did you think?

Bigwig I‘ve read it, and it was a fascinating novel with many interesting ideas. Rand is a force of nature as a writer, and controversial, but that just made it more appealing (nothing is more boring than a novel everyone approves of). You might love it or hate it due to the economic and social implications of its ideas, but you‘ll never forget reading it. (edited) 1y
BookDadGirlDad @Bigwig It's the economic and social aspects that intrigues me. Your review piques the interest more. 1y

TIL … there are a bunch of Litsy folks unironically reading and loving this book and its philosophy.

I guess someone has to boot-lick the boy-billionaires

thebacklistbook Ayn (pronounced Ann) rand is a delusional, annoying pain in my side. When I was in college I tried to read her book because if I could and wrote a paper on it I could win 10000 dollars. Not even that could keep me reading it. 1y
CarolynM Each to their own, I guess🤷🏻‍♀️ 1y
MicrobeMom I loved this book. It is well written and a good story. Absolutely hate the philosophy! 1y

SamAnne Hated this one too. Bad memories of dudes in college obsessed with her. They want on to be destructive people in society. Well, one classmate created Wikipedia and then he went off the political deep end. 1y
Lauredhel @MicrobeMom definitely just a matter of taste as far as the story goes, which is absolutely fine! But the philosophy is outright abhorrent. 1y
Lauredhel @SamAnne same! Well not the Wikipedia guy, but the objectivism-obsessed dudes. 1y
Lauredhel @CarolynM definitely each to their own on story taste! When it comes to values and human rights, I'm much less accepting of abhorrent stuff. 1y

Ayn Rand is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors. I am currently reading not 1 but 3 of her novels. I couldn't get through Anthem however. She's definitely what I consider an acquired taste. What's your favorite Ayn Rand book? I want to read her nonfiction at some point.

Alfoster This one is my favorite even though it‘s so long! I loved The Fountainhead as well but this one kept me thinking about It forever!🤩 2y
bibliobliss @Alfoster Yes. It's actually more interesting to me right now than The Fountainhead 2y

#wondrouswednesday @Eggs Thank you for the tag!

1. The tagged book and The Fountainhead by the same author has been on my shelves for at least 15 years.
2. I always think I'm going to read them, but I put them off because I worry I'll be bored by them.
3. Currently reading The Shanghai Girls by Lisa See and Gwendy's Magic Feather by Richard Chizmar.

⭐⭐⭐⭐

Where to begin?
"My philosophy, in essence, is the concept of man as a heroic being, with his own happiness, as the moral purpose of his life, with productive achievement as his noblest activity, and reason as his only absolute." - Ayn Rand

What if the titans of industry left? Rand uses a theoretical #economic #dystopia America to present her what-if.
Regardless if you agree with her, she opens your mind. #worthit #JohnGalt #Objectivism

CuriousG When I read this 20 years ago it blew my mind, but now the ablest nonsense makes me want to punch someone...I've definitely changed in 2 decades! Having a brother with a developmental disability and a husband with serious brain injury I see how damaging the sentiments in this really are as so many of us internalize the nonsense that we are only worthy human beings if able to 'contribute in traditional ways. 3y
CuriousG Seeing first-hand people contemplate taking their lives because of a society that pushes this stuff is eye opening. I want to be neutral on the subject, but clearly I'm not. That being said, I'm glad you found a book you found thought provoking. We could all use more of that! 3y
CuriousG I should say sorry - I didn't mean to sound judgy. I truly do think it is great that you found this book thought provoking and I think people should love what speaks to them, even if it doesn't speak to me It's clearly just a bit of a trigger for me. 3y
Vivlio_Gnosi @CuriousG thanks for sharing. A variety of viewpoints is critical to provide deep perspective which is vital to a society's success. I don't agree with everything Rand penned, I do respect her efforts greatly for writing her beliefs in such an in-depth manner & I wanted to conquer her monumental work. The more I can read that challenges me mentally can only be beneficial. I relish the adventure of consuming classic tomes which is wht drove me here 3y
