Good Morning, Monster
Good Morning, Monster: Five Heroic Journeys to Recovery | Catherine Gildiner
A therapist creates moving portraits of five of her most memorable patients, men and women she considers psychological heroes. Catherine Gildiner is a bestselling memoirist, a novelist, and a psychologist in private practice for twenty-five years. In Good Morning, Monster, she focuses on five patients who overcame enormous trauma--people she considers heroes. With a novelist's storytelling gift, Gildiner recounts the details of their struggles, their paths to recovery, and her own tale of growth as a therapist. The five cases include a successful but lonely musician suffering sexual dysfunction; a young woman whose father abandoned her and her siblings in a rural cottage; an Indigenous man who'd endured great trauma at a residential school; a young woman whose abuse at the hands of her father led to a severe personality disorder; and a glamorous workaholic whose negligent mother had greeted her each morning with "Good morning, Monster." Each patient presents a mystery, one that will only be unpacked over years. They seek Gildiner's help to overcome an immediate challenge in their lives, but discover that the source of their suffering has been long buried. It will take courage to face those realities, and creativity and resourcefulness from their therapist. Each patient embodies self-reflection, stoicism, perseverance, and forgiveness as they work unflinchingly to face the truth. Gildiner's account of her journeys with them is moving, insightful, and sometimes humorous. It offers a behind-the-scenes look into the therapist's office and explains how the process can heal even the most unimaginable wounds.

This book written by a therapist about 5 of her patients who survived jaw-droppingly horrible childhoods was fascinating. Gildiner illustrates the therapeutic process with skill and honesty about her own failures and struggles in the process. These are some very powerful stories well-told. #bookspin

In this fascinating book, Gildiner shares the story of 5 clients she saw in her 25 year career. She describes them as “heroes” and how each one persevered through devastating circumstances. I appreciated how she acknowledged when she made mistakes in her counseling. One of the most heartbreaking & interesting stories was of Danny, a Native man in Canada who was forced to go to residential school. All these stories need to be told and listened to.

Intense stories of five people who had encountered unimaginable childhood trauma. Psychologist Catherine Gildiner helped them identify their monsters and overcome barriers that had arrested their lives. My jaw dropped so many times.

Such an insightful book. It is amazing what the human psyche can overcome. It was terribly sad to hear details of what these patients‘ childhoods entailed, but really inspiring that they had the courage to enter therapy and seek ways to improve themselves.

This book was so engaging and interesting! I found myself cheering for each of her patients and couldn‘t wait to read to the end of each of their stories. There were a couple of them that I fully related to, and I had quite a few ‘Aha!‘ moments along the way. Highly recommend this book!

If it weren‘t for @Chelsea.Poole sharing her #Top21of21 list, I never would have found this book. It‘s heartbreaking but insanely compelling. Catherine Gildiner, a Canadian psychotherapist shares her 5 most outstanding cases. I found this book accessible and written with care & compassion. Tread lightly, as some content is brutal. Lots of TW. #Hoopla audio

So glad the cover caught my eye on your #Top21of21 list 🤩 I think it‘s even better than Maybe You Should Talk To Someone. @KarenUK @Reggie I think this book might be to your liking - but there‘s some heavy stuff. #HooplaAudio

I can‘t sleep and I enjoyed everyone‘s posts for #12Booksof2021, so here‘s mine. A top read of January 2021 @Andrew65
Funny because @Cinfhen just mentioned this book, and I was thinking about how it has stayed with me this year. But readers beware: some heartbreaking content here!

Another Goodreads recommendation 😄
I read a nonfiction self-help book and Goodreads recommends a science-fiction fantasy mystery.

AmyG I just laughed reading your post. One has nothing to do with the other...except for the word “monster”. 🤣 3y
vlwelser I love these. I would also recommend Gideon the Ninth to everyone, but this might be excessive. Amazon may need to work on its algorithm. 3y
Kenyazero Ha XD Goodreads is a little wonky. I've had super weird suggestions like this! 3y

Excellent! Gildiner, a therapist, shares accounts of five patients she treated. This is not an easy read - the patients have all truly suffered in their lives; however, with Gildiner as their guide, they put in the hard work necessary to heal and grow. Such an inspirational read.

LiteraryinPA Is it at all similar to the recent book Maybe You Should Talk to Someone? 4y
Thousand-Lives @LiteraryinLititz Yes it is. I really enjoyed both books. 4y

Helllloooo 2021 reading year!! I‘ve been reading but haven‘t gotten around to posting my latest reads. 🌟 This is #nonfiction, 5 of the most impactful stories/patients as treated by Canadian therapist, Catherine Gildiner. As my friend, who also read these, said “these stories have changed my soul” and I couldn‘t agree more! Fans of “Maybe You Should Talk to Someone”, make this your next read! Heartbreaking, yet life-affirming.

Kalalalatja I loved Gottlieb‘s book, so this will definitely go on my tbr! 4y
Thousand-Lives Absolutely agree. I‘m reading this right now and already know it‘s my first 5 star read of the year. 4y

5/5🌟With honesty, humour and pristine storytelling Gildiner has written a facinating look at therapy and psychology and its power to heal. I loved how she spoke of behind the scenes with these patients as well as their journeys together. How these patients changed her as well as themselves. This was such a moving read. Shedding light on how people can cope with severe trauma and come out the other side, heartbreaking and inspiring. #bookreview
