PRE-ORDER NOW: THE BRAND-NEW BOOK FROM MARIAN KEYES, THE INTERNATIONALLY BESTSELLING AUTHOR OF THE BREAK AND THE WOMAN WHO STOLE MY LIFE They're a glamorous family, the Caseys. Johnny Casey, his two brothers Ed and Liam, their beautiful, talented wives and all their kids spend a lot of time together - birthday parties, anniversary celebrations, weekends away. And they're a happy family. Johnny's wife, Jessie - who has the most money - insists on it. Under the surface, though, conditions are murkier. While some people clash, other people like each other far too much . . . Everything stays under control until Ed's wife Cara, gets concussion and can't keep her thoughts to herself. One careless remark at Johnny's birthday party, with the entire family present, starts Cara spilling out all their secrets. In the subsequent unravelling, every one of the adults finds themselves wondering if it's time - finally - to grow up? 'Sensitive, funny, wonderful, immensely touching' Nigella Lawson 'Magnificently messy lives, brilliantly untangled. Funny, tender and completely absorbing!' Graham Norton 'Happy making with glorious wit' Helen Lederer 'Funny & thoughtful & such brilliantly drawn characters I am genuinely bereft that my time with them is over' Hannah Beckerman 'It's SUCH a treat. I felt like I was reading the cleverest cream cake of words' Caitlin Moran 'Marian Keyes's gift for storytelling is utterly magnificent. I feel like I've met every single character in this book. Nobody nails chaotic families like Marian' Liz Nugent 'I loved every word of Grown Ups. I will be missing those gorgeous vibrant characters for many weeks to come' Liane Moriarty 'Tender, hilarious, important, with characters who feel as real as your own family by the time you're done' Beth O'Leary Praise for Marian Keyes: 'Mercilessly funny' The Times 'Clever, hilarious, poignant' Sunday Times 'Wildly funny, romantic and nearly impossible to put down' Daily Mail 'Guaranteed to make me laugh on the very first page' Liane Moriarty

A soft or maybe mixed pick. This story is like a very slow and looooong train wreck. It's got a weird structure, an enormous cast, and a lot of nervous anticipation. But it's also got intriguing family dynamics and characterizations, and very strong depictions of love, addiction and grief. I don't regret the 6 or 7 hours I put into it.

Uggh what a confusing book. Half way in I thought Keys had managed to write a book full of well fleshed out but awful people m, two thirds of the way in I thought I might dnf but my curiosity as to what happened to them all won through. Then before I know it I have almost finished and am cheering them on. All of which h to say it‘s a rich, detailed book full of well written people you probably wouldn‘t want to be friends with !

I enjoyed the writing and the depth of so many different characters. But in my opinion this book was far too long (and normally I love a book that‘s 500+ pages!) I just found this one dragged, too many unnecessary chapters it felt like I was reading it forever but couldn‘t really identify a solid plot. Not my favourite 🤷🏻‍♀️

It took a while to warm up to the characters, but once I did I loved each and everyone of them. The story was entertaining but not as funny as made out. It became a couldn‘t put down read especially after the middle of the story. I‘m quite sad to leave the characters tbh ❤️

I needed something easy-ish on a Friday night, and I know lots of people love Marian Keyes for her big-hearted, witty stories. Sounded about right.
So far, so good except one character is.depicted with major internalized fatphobia. Like 2 pages on her yo-yo dieting, guilt, shame, and "being good" by not eating the bread. ? I plan to keep reading, but may have to bail if it continues to be this character's defining trait. Now that I'm ⬇️

merelybookish to fatphobia and working to challenge it in myself, these kinds of 'norms' really bother me. 3y
batsy Haven't read Keyes, but I remember bailing on a number of books that were part of the "chicklit" trend (?) back in the day because there was often a lot of that internalised fatphobia and the obsessive dieting. 3y
Oryx I would say stick with it, because she is going somewhere with that character. I don't want to spoil it, but Marion does tend to hide bigger issues in what initially looks like it's superficial. Her books can be a bit darker than people expect. 3y

merelybookish @batsy Part of my interest in reading Keyes is to challenge some of my other biases about so-called 'chicklit? Women's fiction? Whatever it's called now as I have been dismissive of it. But I guess there can be problems with the genre. 3y
merelybookish @Oryx That's good to know. Thank you! I plan to keep going. Do you have a favourite Keyes novel? 3y
batsy I hear you because I have those biases, too. Probably because I picked the wrong ones. I've heard a lot of good things about Keyes so I hope this gets better in that sense. 3y

I‘m determined to read more lighter books this year, and to try authors I‘ve never got around to, starting with Marian Keyes. First thoughts: great writing and good fun, yet tackling quite big, serious issues. Yet, this was a great big book, and I didn‘t quite love it. Still pondering over why…

It took a little while for me to become familiar with the characters but as I came to know the Casey brothers and their families I was pulled right in. I loved Jessie and Cara and I'm kind of sad to leave them now 😋 ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Grown Ups follows the foibles of the Casey brothers, their wives and families, as they each go through their ups and downs. I love reading Keyes and this one I read to Mom. She loved it so much she stayed up late to hear the end tonight. It was a perfect book to end our visit on.

I've always been a fan of Keyes, and some of her books have helped me through challenging times. Her wonderful mix of honesty, humour (and I have to say without any bias(!) that our Irish humour is the best, as well as managing some difficult topics in a realistic and meaningful way has always rung true for me. She brings her characters to life, warts and all and makes me cry and laugh in equal measure. Now that's an author.

It‘s +17 today. It‘s very unusual for us to be so warm and sunny already in winterland. There is still snow in my yard, but it is warm enough for shorts today. I read a little and napped a little. And maybe burned a little. It was glorious! A little late, but I finally have some time for #MarvellousMarch

Sigh. Sunday, tea, and an Irish family drama. Irish storytellers are the best. Marian Keyes is my Maeve Binchy substitute. Maeve got me through many dark days. Authors never die. But I miss her.

A book that starts with a family tree is always promising. It‘s almost as good as a map. I really need a funny family drama after too many depressing books in a row.

This one dragged on too long for me. Normally, I‘m a huge fan of her style of writing, but there were too many jumps in between stories and characters to keep them all straight, and the book dragged on too long before storylines were resolved. A little disappointed.

It‘s been ages since I‘ve read Marian Keyes! And this was exactly what I turn to her for - a funny & troubling story about a dysfunctional family. I loved the growth of the characters and the humour infused throughout the often sad story that Keyes wove.

I should point out that this barely makes a dent in the piles still at my place. Next step is to clear out a bedroom to convert into a library!

The genre the publisher is placing this is a Romance, but I found this to be a much more. In fact, I would say this is more of a complicated families story, more than anything.

As always, this was a another really great book by Marian Keyes. I always feel a bit sad after finishing one of her books. But I also can‘t wait for the next one. This book‘s central characters are the Casey family. We weave through all their foibles and idiosyncrasies and get to visit some lovely hotels and holiday destinations on the way....and one not so nice hotel with hilarious consequences.
