Rook
Rook | Sharon Cameron
Who needs a wedding ring when you can pick up a sword? A remarkable and utterly inventive novel from Sharon Cameron, author of THE DARK UNWINDING, which USA TODAY called "spellbindingly imaginative." History has a way of repeating itself. In the Sunken City that was once Paris, all who oppose the new revolution are being put to the blade. Except for those who disappear from their prison cells, a red-tipped rook feather left in their place. Is the mysterious Red Rook a savior of the innocent or a criminal? Meanwhile, across the sea in the Commonwealth, Sophia Bellamy's arranged marriage to the wealthy Ren Hasard is the last chance to save her family from ruin. But when the search for the Red Rook comes straight to her doorstep, Sophia discovers that her fianc is not all he seems. Which is only fair, because neither is she. As the Red Rook grows bolder and the stakes grow higher, Sophia and Ren find themselves locked in a tantalizing game of cat and mouse. Daring intrigue, delicious romance, and spine-tingling suspense fill the pages of this extraordinary tale from award-winning author Sharon Cameron.

Rook is one of my absolute favorites. I read it every couple years and recommend it often. It‘s a post apocalyptic retelling of The Scarlett Pimpernel, a mysterious character who rescued innocent nobles from the guillotine. This time, our Pimpernel is 17 year-old Sophie and her older brother Tom who enjoy the thrill of a rescue and besting the leaders of the revolution.

📚Anxious People by Fredrik Backman had an unreliable narrator and it ended up being an epic plot twist! So I guess it would depend on the book.
📚 I have an embosser that I use in all of my books! It‘s my favorite part of buying a book and adding it to my shelf!
📚 I recommend for more people to read Grimenna by N.K. Blazevic and Rook by Sharon Cameron! They are so amazing!

I haven‘t yet decided how I feel about the tagged book. I‘m interested but not hooked. I‘ll need another hour or two before I can say whether I‘ll stick with it. #audiocooking

ETA: well, Sora glitched out and returned all the books I got from Sync, so I guess I won‘t be finishing it. 🤷‍♀️

HOMG I FINISHED!

This took a lot of things from popular YA books and tropes so it really is a book you've read before but the world wasn't developed and the characters were super one dimensional.

Reviewsbylola What a bummer. Such a relief to be done though I bet. 😆 5y

This was the last book for #lmpbc, and it was also my favorite! I loved it! Sure there were bits I predicted, but there were plenty of times I was surprised. The characters were excellent (likeable, hateable— you felt exactly how the author wanted you to feel about them), the dystopian plot was new and interesting— I‘m all for it. || So glad I joined this book club with y‘all. It was my first one, but it won‘t be my last!

Soooo I‘ve been away for a while. Oops!! Life has been busy and stressful so I haven‘t been reading much. Then I hated a lot of what I read. But I love this right now.

julesG This looks interesting. 6y
KeepCalmWithBooksAndCoffee @julesG it is very interesting! It is a futuristic retelling of The Scarlet Pimpernel with some dystopian elements. So far very fun! 6y

I am so mad that it took me so long to read this book. This book was fantastic! It is so original. It's set in the future, our world no longer, a romance, a suspense. I couldn't put it down!

Not a bad view to finish up this book. And I'm pretty split. It felt like there was trying to be action but there wasn't really and a lot of names to try and remember.

MarriedtoMrT I was so-so on this one as well. So much potential but I remember being bored during parts. 7y

#riotgrams #currentlyreading - This is a YA reselling of The Scarlet Pimpernel with a teen girl as the Pimpernel, called the Red Rook in this version. I'm only a few chapters in, but I'm already tempted to recommend it to anyone who loves the Scarlet Pimpernel or a good YA dystopia.

I am loving this book so far. When I picked up I did not realize that it's a retelling of The Scarlet Pimpernel, which I loved when I read it in jr. high. The best part though, is that the hero in this tale is not a dashing and debonair man, but a teenage girl!

An interesting story set in post-apocalyptic pre-Revolutionary France. A fascinating idea with vibrant characters and intriguing concepts. A great idea, but laid out in a rather improper way.

I. Love. This. Book. Hence the re-read.

I have seen many people say they couldn't get into it, which is a shame. The characters are so wonderful (bonjour monsieur René!), and I love the story.

Sophie is feisty and has a strong moral compass. René is such a saucy Frenchman whom I adore.

I will admit its a slow burn type of story. It has the feel of a Victorian/Gothic novel in that sense. But I honestly loved every moment of it.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ of 5

It took about half the book for me to really get into this one. I liked the characters at first but the story just felt at a stand still for a while but it intrigued enough to keep reading. I'm glad I finished it, I did like the ending and I really liked the love story between Sophia and René. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Not sure how to feel about this one...I enjoyed reading it, and the parallels to Robespierre and the French Revolution, but the world building was a little confusing. Still a good standalone to read though, if you're not wanting to get into a whole new series.

Ughhhh. I got about 300 pages in, and just couldn't take this anymore. I skimmed the rest till the end and I'm glad I bailed. It's just so excruciatingly boring, the dystopian world was not described in enough detail to make me care. Definitely a disappointment.
