Fun mother-daughter story about a college visit trip. There aren't many good stories about a professional single mother and a teenaged daughter. The mother in this is much more real. She struggles with her daughter but worries about her leaving. She doesn't fall in love with some random guy. She has her own friends and her own career, but worries that she handled parenting all wrong. The story was solid and funny. Recommended for parents of teens.

I needed some light reading & this filled that need. A mother and teenage daughter are traveling together on a college tour visit. It is totally about the mother and teenage daughter dynamic. It is told from both points of view. I enjoyed reading it.

❄️ The tagged book was my last. I love Abbi Waxman, so funny and a bit snarky.
❄️ I subscribe to #BOTM and The Bookshelf Thomasville Shelf Subscription (Annie‘s pick) I love choosing books with Book of the Month and getting a surprise book from Annie.
❄️ Aside from Twas the Night Before Christmas I don‘t have a fav but a couple Christmases ago I read Mr Dickens and His Carol and really enjoyed it.

I bought this at least a year ago because I loved Bookish Life of Nina Hill. Didn‘t love it as much, but I enjoyed the humor & characters. It‘s also relatable for parents who have teens. A mother who works too much takes her daughter on a college tour (apparently, this is something the wealthy do?) hoping to connect better with her. Told from both perspectives. #doublespin for July

As much as I liked this mother-daughter story, I kept wondering just how weird the US school and college/university system is.

4/5 stars

Too lazy to go and take a picture/screenshot of the book, so a picture of #GhostCat hanging out in my wardrobe.
#CatsOfLitsy

Cosmos_Moon_River I really dislike the public/private school distinction and perceived superiority of one over the other. I‘ve attended both in k-12 and college/grad level, worked at a private school I could never afford to send my kids to, and my kids attend public. So hard to see opportunities of children and young people limited by resources they were or weren‘t born into. 3y
RaeLovesToRead Awww Ghost had found a snoodle-cubby! 🥰 3y
GingerAntics The school system here is VERY weird! In public schools alone, there is a hierarchy of privilege or lack there of. Then there is a hierarchy of private schools. The system is entirely ephed and makes little to no sense… even to Americans. I can‘t imagine how this looks from the outside. 3y

I am officially an Abbi Waxman fan. I‘ve liked all of her books. This book is about a mother and daughter on a college tour. There are overbearing, competitive parents, a super enthusiastic tour director, and a scandal back at home that kept me guessing. I can relate to the mother/teenage daughter dynamic and enjoyed the dual POV storytelling technique. Very entertaining. Makes me appreciate that I survived this phase of life😂

I‘m finding myself really annoyed because Georgetown is within walking distance of GW and the closest metro station to Georgetown is actually the GW stop. Doesn‘t it drive you crazy when books get your local geography wrong?

⭐️⭐️⭐️ A thoughtful look at mother-daughter relationships and female friendships while tackling the very stressful journey that is the college admissions process. This is not Waxman‘s best, but I still enjoyed the real-life situations and fun characters. The high school cheating scandal didn‘t add anything, IMO. I think the social media stuff could‘ve been addressed differently. Still, I‘m glad that shit didn‘t exist in the 90s!

Scochrane26 I just bought this one recently. 4y

Jessica and her daughter Emily go on a college tour. In the first stop, Washington DC, they take a side trip, resulting in this quote that amused me.

I love a good gift shop. One of the items on my post-COVID travel list is getting back to the Georgia O‘Keefe museum in Santa Fe. I need more stuff for my walls.

"...maybe I didn't ruin her life by working all the time which is a relief. Maybe not ideal parenting but you know what?... there is no such thing... We're all doing the best we can..."

I'm often worried for second novels following beloved debuts (loved Nina!), but this one was simply perfect. Parents and children are always learning and adapting and this duo gave me all the feels plus I really wish I had Jessica's workplace backbone. #goals

Megabooks This is at least her fourth novel (Nina is her third at least because these two were before) if you‘re looking for more. I loved (edited) 4y

This was my first read in December and it was a great start! I loved it, it was so funny at times. Told from the point of view of mother and daughter. We have a mother/daughter relationship with all the possible problems it could entail. They are visiting possible collages, in a tour with lots of other parent/child pairs. Daughter doesn't know what she wants to do, mum wants her to go to collage. Lots of fun! #books

Abbi Waxman is the only author who can write a book about a mother taking her daughter on a college tour and make me want to actually pick it up. She has such an amazing knack for the bittersweet, with her wistful but witty writing. I enjoyed where this ended up and the path it took to get there.

From the acknowledgments. I can relate as I think the best tip for parenting is to find good friends to share experiences with and to help one another.

TrishB Me and my best friend have two kids the same age (she has a third where I don‘t though!) we have always been our own little support team through it all. Didn‘t always have the answers, but sometimes just someone to talk too. 4y

I saw this book & thought it was a good last book to read before I officially start grad school on Monday. My oldest is 16, a Junior in high school, and we should be touring colleges this year but clearly that‘s not happening. I had to laugh a few times because they have the mom‘s perspective and the daughter‘s which makes me think of all the interactions with my son, as he tells me I nag him all the time. Ah life with teenagers

Another pick from my Modern Mrs Darcy summer list. This was a light read that still touched on some hot button issues. The mom and the daughter tell the story and they seemed a little too self aware to be true sometimes but I enjoyed it.

It was a happy accident that I started reading this. In this book a somewhat estranged mother and daughter take a college tour trip together. Typical, relatable hiccups are encountered, however, it‘s also a surprising take on strong female relationships without feeling forced or serious. In fact, this book is a very light read. If you liked the dynamics of Rory and Lorelei on Gilmore Girls, consider giving this one a try.

Megabooks Such a fun book! 4y

A few days ago I started a book before bed that I wasn‘t sure I‘d like. Yesterday I went back to reading. I got about 25% in and I was like, this book changed so much! ModernMrsDarcy.com 2020 Summer Reading Guide

A mother and daughter go on series of college tours by bus. Things just don‘t turn out quite the way that either of them planned. Realistic portrayals of a working mother and a teen/adult young adult relationship. I enjoyed this one.

While I didn't like I Was Told It Would Get Easier as much as either The Bookish Life of Nina Hill or The Garden of Small Beginnings, it was entertaining enough. I don't regret having read it (I also didn't need to bail on it, as I did Waxman's Other People's Houses).

The story follows single mother-daughter duo Jessica and Emily Burnstein as they travel the tony university circuit by bus with a bunch of other privileged parent/child duos.

How cute is that cover! Recieved this arc from Berkley pub for review. This comes out on the 16th.

It's a pretty light, fast-paced tale told through the alternating POVs of Jessica and her daughter, Emily, as they navigate a planned college tour trip, them both dealing with big things back home, and each other. It was sweet and a good palate cleanser.
