The Bookish Life of Nina Hill
The Bookish Life of Nina Hill | Abbi Waxman
Abbi Waxman is both irreverent and thoughtful.#1 New York Times bestselling author Emily Giffin The author of Other Peoples Houses and The Garden of Small Beginnings delivers a quirky and charming novel chronicling the life of confirmed introvert Nina Hill as she does her best to fly under everyone's radar. Meet Nina Hill: A young woman supremely confident in her own...shell. The only child of a single mother, Nina has her life just as she wants it: a job in a bookstore, a kick-butt trivia team, a world-class planner and a cat named Phil. If she sometimes suspects there might be more to life than reading, she just shrugs and picks up a new book. When the father Nina never knew existed suddenly dies, leaving behind innumerable sisters, brothers, nieces, and nephews, Nina is horrified. They all live close by! They're allor mostly allexcited to meet her! She'll have to Speak. To. Strangers. It's a disaster! And as if that wasn't enough, Tom, her trivia nemesis, has turned out to be cute, funny, and deeply interested in getting to know her. Doesn't he realize what a terrible idea that is? Nina considers her options. 1. Completely change her name and appearance. (Too drastic, plus she likes her hair.) 2. Flee to a deserted island. (Hard pass, see: coffee). 3. Hide in a corner of her apartment and rock back and forth. (Already doing it.) It's time for Nina to come out of her comfortable shell, but she isn't convinced real life could ever live up to fiction. It's going to take a brand-new family, a persistent suitor, and the combined effects of ice cream and trivia to make her turn her own fresh page.

This book made me laugh 😂 that is worth mentioning cos most of the time I choose hardcore emotional books which are tearjerker. So I loved this one . This book has its own fan base mostly because in one or the other way bookish people can relate with Nina. Though I felt it‘s little dramatic, Perfect for a light read.4.5⭐️#bookspinbingo

I couldn‘t focus on this one. There were a lot of characters and it just took me forever to get through it and it felt like not a lot was going on. Disclaimer - I have been sick with Covid and think maybe that could have made it more difficult for me to get through this one. Maybe I will revisit another time when I feel better!

I am of two minds on this book. On one side, I enjoyed the writing, I liked Nina, I enjoyed the small townish setting and the quirkiness that implies. On the other hand, conflict seemed resolved too easily and while I liked the love interest, he got on my nerves with his total lack of understanding even in the face of a full blown panic attack.

This was such a great book!! 🧡💙 I‘ve been reading several books about books and publishing so I finally picked this one up. I had borrowed it from my mom over a year ago. I read it in two days. It made me laugh out loud a few times and had a lot of depth as well. 5⭐️ and one I could see myself re-reading (and I‘m not much of a re-reader).

Nina Hill is an almost orphan working in a bookstore in a trendy neighbourhood in LA. She has a crush on the rival quiz team captain but can‘t seem to do anything about it. The unexpected appearance of her previously unknown multigenerational family throws her quiet life into relative chaos. A gentle romcom - well worth the time - I‘m very envious of her privilege and lifestyle .

Super cute and sweet book to kick off the new year. Any story with “book” in the title is usually a pick for me! Nina is relatable and the author did a great job of easily transporting me into Nina‘s life in Larchmont. If you want a quick and easy read with humor, romance, trivia facts, and plenty of literary nods, this one is for you! ❤️👓📚🐱

LiteraryinLawrence I really loved this one. It helped me through my low point at the start of Covid. 11mo

."Nina had looked around (the library) and realized she would never run out of things to read, and that certainty filled her with peace and satisfaction. It didn't matter what hit the fan; as long as there were unread books in the world she would be fine. Being surrounded by books was the closest she'd ever gotten to feeling like the member of a gang. "

quote
ProudBookNerd

"Libraries were her favourite places, and when she traveled, she would start out at the local library, thus immediately identifying herself as a total nerd. They say you always remember your first time, and Nina definitely did. Walking into the Los Angeles library to get her first library card, when she was eight or so was still a memory she treasured. Loved this book. Light read, not heavy at all. Perfect for a quiet evening in. The plot was not intense, there were a few passages that were very relatable and it had its humorous moments. Made me wish that we still had more independent bookstores around. As it is, I just randomly came acrose this book while browsing in my local library. I love it when that happens. You don't have that same experience with digital books at all.

She enjoyed people—she really did—she just needed to take them in homeopathic doses; a little of the poison was a cure.

She sometimes made lists of things she‘d already done solely so she could cross them off, which she couldn‘t help feeling was pretty pathetic but strangely satisfying. :")

She was small and slender and gave the overall impression of a baby deer, until she spoke and you realized you‘d been looking at a fox all along. As her good friend Leah once said, she wasn‘t mean; she was painfully accurate.

I will admit that I chose this book solely because of the cute cover. It was just okay- I'm not sure what I really think about it. Nina wasn't particularly likable, but neither was Tom. The long lost family spin was a bit interesting, but I finished out of curiosity rather than actual interest.

A light contemporary romance with appealing characters across the board. I could have done with fewer jokey asides and digressions because they kept taking me out of the story a bit, but I'm a grumpy old lady so bear that in mind. Overall I'd recommend it.

Hate it for TWO REASONS:
1:Tom announces he is Nina‘s boyfriend after one week? In public to her friends and family without having a discussion with Nina first? Is that only odd to me??

Second reason in comments!!!! ⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️

Moonprismpower 2:Tom was offended when Nina had an anxiety stack and when she said she needed to be alone he refused, had to be told twice. He assumes this is a breakup. Nina has to chase after this loser? Even though he completely disregarded her needs? What a dick. 1y

Knocked Ed Asner off my TBR list. And listened to the audio book, something I need to do more. Loved Merci Suárez, & Nina Hill. My son bailed on I survived. He is getting harder to read to🙁. And Refugee was too much.I will revisit the recommendations from this week and have something good on stand by, power through, pull it off like a bandaid, pull up my big girl shorts and never look back. Good book, I'm just done with that genre.
