I‘m so upset with how this ended. And I was also super confused as to how it started. It started basically in the middle of all the action, so it took me a minute to figure out what was going on. Also it had been a little bit (but not that long), since I read the previous book.

I think this is the last book in the series. I‘m upset with how it ended, but it‘s basically setting up what could potentially be a spin off series or more books.

JuliaTheBookNerd There is supposed to be a book 18 called Twelve Months coming out end of this year or beginning of next year. 😊 11mo
Laughterhp @JuliaTheBookNerd Ooo!! That‘s good news! Because I really do like Harry Dresden! 11mo

Okay this was better than Peace Talks, but the two could‘ve been one big book. It didn‘t tell an epic story, I was epic for epic‘s sake. It tried too hard to be big when it didn‘t have a big story to tell. And Butcher had to kill off my favourite character because why tf not. There are way better, and shorter, books earlier in the series. The ending was not overly sentimental and promises bigger things that I‘m not confident Butcher can deliver.

33 of 2021. 10 hours and 40 minutes for #20in4. Didn‘t get to my goal this time, but there‘s next time.

This book was excellent. A lot of development in the story. Love this series! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️🧙

Woah that was a ride. This book dragged in the middle for me, just a couple too many battle scenes but it definitely picked up I‘m the last 200 pages or so. By the end the book I had tears in my eyes and I am interested to see how the new status quo works out. This is definitely not my favourite Dresden book but in the end I was okay with it and after waiting 6 years to read more Dresden files I‘m glad Butcher is continuing the series.

Butcher is falling into the trap of each book having Harry face a bigger, stronger enemy, and this book shows it's starting to get too big. Lots of characters to keep track of and nonstop action blunt the emotional impact of what's happening. It's also been a while since I read Peace Talks, and you need to recollect those details for the ending to make sense.

#pop21: a book set mostly or entirely outdoors

Traci1 I read that this one and Peace Talks were written as one large book, but the publisher chose to split it in half. I'm sure they made more money that way, but I think it made both books not as good as they'd have been as one. 3y
SaunteringVaguelyDownwards @Traci1 I definitely got the impression that the two books were two halves of the same story! 3y

Harry never ever disappoints! What a wild ride! An epic all night battle of, well, everyone.

It‘s great to have a bit of escapism from the real world so when Jim Butcher decides to punch me in the gut, it hurts from the pages of fantasy to the real world.

🎧 James Marsters, worth the credit. A lot of fighting & dying. Saying goodbye to popular characters, new alliances are tentatively made, Harry is his usual snarky self. Funny, gross, inviting. Loved the ending, I cried. I wish Peace Talks & Battle Ground were combined as I‘d easily buy that hardcover. The Dresden Files seems to have come to a place where it can end & be restarted anew! Hope Butcher accepts the challenge. Great series! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2

I really did not like this book. I knew that there was going to be an epic battle, but that‘s all it was. Almost 15 hours of non-stop battle scenes. If that‘s your thing you might like this book. My husband liked it; I found it boring as all get out. Then there are some things that happened that just pissed me off because they were so stupid. This book was only saved by James Marsters‘ narration (perfect) and the additional short story at the end.

Traci1 I feel the same way. I read that he had written this one and the previous one, Peace Talks, to be one novel and the publishers split it into two. I think, even though it would have been excessively long, I'd have preferred it as one book that wasn't just one nonstop battle. 3y
KathyWheeler @Traci1 I agree. It could‘ve been one book if it had been judiciously edited. I do not feel that we needed 15 hours of nothing but battle scenes to understand that this was epic. I would‘ve preferred one book too. 3y
KathyWheeler This book actually made me think I‘d just drop the Dresden Files as a series. If it‘s the last one, fine. If there are more, I may or may not pick them up. 3y

After a long hiatus, Dresden is back with 2 new books this year, and this second one is a doozy. To protect Chicago from utter destruction, old enemies will become unlikely allies, and some allies become mortal enemies, as they all leave it all on the field for good or ill. Harry‘s world will never be the same again as this series shifts again in another Changes level realignment. I can‘t imagine where he‘s headed next...

JazzFeathers I should really start this one. I bought the first novel a long time ago but haven't read it yet. 3y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @JazzFeathers The series has grown a lot since then. But it‘s always been a great guilty pleasure read for me...in the beginning books it reads almost like all those old PI noir books and movies of a past age, except he‘s a wizard. It‘s grown more supernatural over the books with different courts of vampires encompassing different abilities, the movie Dracula-kind, and a more psychic kind, both fae courts Summer and Winter (Titania & Mab), ... 3y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa ...and a whole score of other supernatural beings that turn up over the books (werewolves, Valkyries, a Titan, fallen angels, etc). As I‘m sure you‘ve figured out, I enjoy anyone who plays well with all the old stories, myths, and legends. 😉 (edited) 3y
JazzFeathers @Riveted_Reader_Melissa LOL! I suspect l'll enjoy rhe noir stories more. But yeah, l had a feeling the series has seriously evolved over the years. I also have a feeling that it needs to be read in order. 3y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @JazzFeathers Yep, definitely in order! If you‘re interested. Maybe after we finish Tolkien 3y

There are very few books/series that I actually prefer the audio version more than the print, but this one I definitely prefer listening to. It dragged and dragged, and I think I would have liked it so much more listening to James Marsters narrate. I'm not sure how a book that is nonstop action from the first to last page can be kind of boring. But it was. It was just one long battle. Still a pick, but it definitely wasn't my favorite of the lot.

KathyWheeler I‘ve read one or two of these books, but once I discovered how good James Marsters is narrating them, I now exclusively listen to them. 4y
Traci1 @KathyWheeler i almost bought it for audible, but my library had it on order with no holds, so I was able to borrow it the day it came out. I wish now though that I'd just bought the audio because I think it would have been a much more enjoyable experience. 4y

Ruthiella Tangential, but I prefer the Amelia Peabody series on audio narrated by Barbara Rosenblatt over reading them with my eyes. Rosenblatt‘s performance enhancers the text. 4y
KathyWheeler @Ruthiella I read those books years ago before I started listening to audiobooks. With the right narrator, I bet they are great listens. 4y
Traci1 @Ruthiella i have the first one of those on my wishlist. I'll have to give it a go on audio. 4y

I started the newest Dresden book today. All of the other books in the series I listened to on audio, but I'd have had to wait months for the audio from the library, so I'm reading the print version. I was lucky to snag first in that line. And I'm hearing James Marsters in my head. I've never noticed that with other books, but I totally hear him in the distinct character voices. It reminded me that he does a spectacular job of narrating.

wanderinglynn He does do a great job! 👍🏻 4y

In book 17 the soul of Chicago is at stake in an epic battle between good and evil. Butcher, like a verbal cinematographer, weaves our reluctant hero Dresden from fight to fight until his final standoff with a friggin' Titan. In the end there are some massive blows to Dresden's world which may seriously shake up the series. 6 years away was a long time, but the 2 books Butcher gave fans this year totally make up for it.

Katerina @Traci1 I haven't heard any of the audiobooks yet. I might, when the series is complete. I think we have 5 books left? But I liked Marsters in the Big Finish Torchwood series. 4y
Traci1 @Katerina he does a good job...after about book 4 or 5. The first ones were done by a different company, and they didn't edit out odd noises. Marsters apparently has a very wet way of speaking. There were lots of awful slurpy sounds that were super annoying in those first books. After that, they're great. 4y
