December was not the greatest of reading months for me. And my #BookSpinBingo proves it.
I was one book away from Bingo and didn't have the time or energy to get to one more.

I did however complete both #BookSpin (Quiet in Her Bones) and #DoubleSpin (Keep you Near) and the massive The Way of Kings, so I'm happy with myself.

Murder mystery set in New Zealand with a strong Momento ( the movie) vibe that I literally had no idea what the hell was going on until almost the end and I still guessed wrong until it hit me over the head 🤣🤣🤣 I have learned nothing from all the mysteries I read and watch ( blame it on the unreliable narrator)

TBH, I had higher hopes for this one, as I love the psy-changeling series. I found this main character annoying, and most of the other characters were unlikable as well. The mysteries were interesting enough to get me to finish listening 🤷‍♀️

10 years ago Aarav's parents had one of their typical domestic disputes & his mother left the house in a rage after stealing $250k from his father's safe. She was never heard from again. Now her car, w her bones in it, have been found in the woods not far from their exclusive community & Aarav will do anything to find out what happened that night. There are so many people in their cul de sac that I made a map as I read to keep them all straight!

I'm listening to this and it's early yet but I'm totally sucked in. Still, I'm going to have to try to borrow it in printed format too so I can make a spreadsheet of all the people who live in the cul de sac! I've totally lost track of names, who is married to whom, and what their nationalities are. I guess it may not be important in the end but the author is painstakingly introducing all these people so I'm going to try to sort them out!

I was too tired to finish the last 60 pages last night, but as soon as I woke up this morning, I was ON IT.

Nalini Singh writes AMAZING mystery thrillers. If you like unreliable narrators, Stepford neighborhoods, and cold cases, I definitely recommend this one.

One of those books where I liked the ending I guessed better than the actual written ending. This book had me feeling ungrounded in moments due to the unreliability of the narrator and that contributed to how long it took me to get through this novel.

Bailedbailed

Forgot to take a screenshot before I returned this book back to the library.

I got about 50% of the way through the audio and had to bail.

I just didn‘t care. I didn‘t care about who killed the mom, didn‘t care why the main character was missing memories. I just didn‘t care and I didn‘t want to continue. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I was disappointed because I really liked the other mystery book I read by her.

Hooked_on_books That‘s a bummer, but I‘m loving the cover image! 3y

An unreliable narrator, a cul-de-sac of rich people keeping secrets, and a ten-year-old disappearance. When the body shows up, we start to unravel what happened one rainy night. It's an atmospheric mystery with a narrator who does doubt in the reader.

I really enjoyed this book!

Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks Sounds good! 4y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa I haven‘t tried her mysteries yet, but I‘ve really enjoyed some of her series books. 4y

ScientistSam @Riveted_Reader_Melissa I've been wanting to try the Psi Changeling books but wasn't sure where to start. 4y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @ScientistSam I haven‘t read those yet either, but I really enjoy her Guild Hunters series. 4y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @ScientistSam Any interest in reading them together, or at least trying them together. Maybe try 1 a month over the summer and then see if we want to carry on? 4y
ScientistSam @Riveted_Reader_Melissa that sounds like fun! 4y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @ScientistSam just let me know what your schedule looks like, want to start in May or is June better? 4y
ScientistSam @Riveted_Reader_Melissa I was going to say May is fine but it looks like a lengthy wait time at the library, so maybe we should plan on June! I just put in a hold for Slave to Sensation 4y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @ScientistSam Okay, June it is! If it comes in early from the library just let me know and we‘ll adjust. 4y
ScientistSam @Riveted_Reader_Melissa I got a hard copy out from the library and am happy to start our buddy read whenever! 3y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @ScientistSam ok! I‘ll take mine off library hold then and should have it pretty quickly. 3y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @ScientistSam And I have it already! I should be able to finish up the books I have currently going and maybe start it this weekend or maybe shortly thereafter. Does that sound good? 3y
ScientistSam @Riveted_Reader_Melissa sounds like a plan! Keep me posted. 3y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @ScientistSam I‘m planning in diving in tonight! How are you doing? 3y
ScientistSam @Riveted_Reader_Melissa just finished my current read and planning to move to this tonight! 3y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @ScientistSam I finished, and I liked it….enough Paranormal Romance to suit me and some great world building in the fantasy/sci-fi area which I like. If it‘s anything like her other series, I‘m guessing the books will get better as they go, I think this was one of her first series…at least it started earlier than Guild Hunters, so I was glad to see such great world-building just at the start, a lot of directions for other books to take. 3y
ScientistSam @Riveted_Reader_Melissa I agree! I'm definitely ready to put the next book on hold! Definitely a PNR rather than fantasy with romance, but that was fine by me. Psy-Net and the history behind the Silence was great world-building. The changelings were more standard shifter tropes but well done and enjoyable, and I liked the mystery even if it was a bit light in favor of the romance and world-building. 3y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @ScientistSam I agree with all of that, I put book 2 on hold already. I know your library had a bit of a longer waiting time last time so let me know if it gives you the “approximately x # of weeks” thing and I‘ll try to sync mine up with you again. And yes, I enjoy a good PNR series with great backstories. 3y
ScientistSam @Riveted_Reader_Melissa it says about three weeks but I wouldn't be surprised if it's a bit sooner. I'm #3 on 2 copies 3y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @ScientistSam Ok… I‘ll set mine for 2 weeks from now and then we‘ll play it by ear until then. 3y

Part Memento, part Rear Window, this atmospheric mystery pulls you in w/ a decade-old murder & an unreliable narrator.

A man returns to his childhood home after an accident. The body of his mother is found after a 10 yr disappearance. The unexpected discovery shakes the Cul-de-sac community & he realizes all his neighbors have secrets.

There are some clichés in the writing, but the overall atmosphere & creepy wild of New Zealand is captivating.

I didn‘t know she wrote outside of paranormal romance and wow this is no romance! An unreliable narrator, and a small cul de sac, where everyone is in everyone‘s business which makes literally everyone a suspect in a 10 year missing person turned murder case. If you like whodunnits this one will keep you guessing

I love Nalini Singh romance, but her thrillers just don‘t blow me away.In this book Nina Rai has just been found after going missing a decade prior. Unfortunately she is found dead, setting off a homicide investigation and a separate investigation by her son,the epitome of unreliable narrator. The idea is fantastic, but the book was all over the place with number of characters and the narrator‘s issues. The ending was a surprise, but not shocking.

Aarav Rai's mom went missing a decade ago. He's suffered an injury and moved back into his childhood bedroom to recuperate when his mom's bones have been found. While the police look closely at Aarav and his father, Aarav begins to look at all the members of his upscale, gated community in an attempt to discover the truth. This is a taut noir thriller full of devastating secrets and betrays.
