Food Rules
Food Rules: An Eater's Manual | Michael Pollan
#1 New York Times BestsellerA definitive compendium of food wisdomEating doesnt have to be so complicated. In this age of ever-more elaborate diets and conflicting health advice, Food Rules brings welcome simplicity to our daily decisions about food. Written with clarity, concision, and wit that has become bestselling author Michael Pollans trademark, this indispensable handbook lays out a set of straightforward, memorable rules for eating wisely, one per page, accompanied by a concise explanation. Its an easy-to-use guide that draws from a variety of traditions, suggesting how different cultures through the ages have arrived at the same enduring wisdom about food. Whether at the supermarket or an all-you-can-eat buffet, this is the perfect guide for anyone who ever wondered, What should I eat?"In the more than four decades that I have been reading and writing about the findings of nutritional science, I have come across nothing more intelligent, sensible and simple to follow than the 64 principles outlined in a slender, easy-to-digest new book called Food Rules: An Eaters Manual, by Michael Pollan." --Jane Brody, The New York Times "The most sensible diet plan ever? We think it's the one that Michael Pollan outlined a few years ago: Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants. So we're happy that in his little new book, Food Rules, Pollan offers more common-sense rules for eating: 64 of them, in fact, all thought-provoking and some laugh-out-loud funny." --The Houston Chronicle" It doesn't get much easier than this. Each page has a simple rule, sometimes with a short explanation, sometimes without, that promotes Pollan's back-to-the-basics-of-food (and-food-enjoyment) philosophy." --The Los Angeles Times"A useful and funny purse-sized manual that could easily replace all the diet books on your bookshelf." --Tara Parker-Pope, The New York TimesMichael Pollans newest book Cooked: A Natural History of Transformation--the story of our most trusted food experts culinary education--was published by The Penguin Press in April 2013.

An excellent book to have on hand and live by. Simple, sound advice for how to eat. We all struggle with our food. We don‘t eat fresh, we don‘t eat about fresh, we eat too much of everything else. Eating is one thing that has the power to bring us together, and it really is true: you are what you eat. So do right by yourself! Grow your food if you can, with love, and most of all, prepare it with love. Your body will thank you. Shown: ⬇️

JenniferEgnor A favorite from a local Vietnamese restaurant that recently closed. I always ordered this! A vermicelli bowl with greens, nuts, a light sauce, and huge seared tofu. I always ate all of it and never felt stuffed. 11mo

Started this little book today. So far my two favorite rules:
#13 "Eat only foods that will eventually rot."
#20 "It‘s not food if it arrived through the window of your car."

Short, sweet and to the point. I read through this book quickly. It is really just an expanded summary of In Defense of Food. Really good reminders. I'll pass it along to my husband, it'll be right up his alley.

#90sInJuly #MyHero Two of my heroes: Marion Nestle and Michael Pollan are food activists who educate and fight to ensure we have healthy food to eat and communicate it in an interesting and entertaining way. Here they are with a couple of my favorites of their many books.💚🍴🥑🥒💚

EchoLogical Has Michael Pollan ever been on OWN's Super Soul Sunday? I think I saw him in an interview with Oprah discussing his book. 7y
DebinHawaii @EchoLogical I didn't see it but it probably was him. I know Oprah had him on her show before. 👍 7y
EchoLogical @DebinHawaii I remember wanting to read the book mentioned but I never got around to it. 7y

This is an interesting (and rather depressing) Oct 2016 article by Michael Pollan about why the Obamas, despite promising overtures early on and an understanding of the issues, ultimately failed to take on corporate agriculture in the US: https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2016/10/09/magazine/obama-administration-big... -- an important read for anyone interested in food issues in the US.

Lynnsoprano Love Michael Pollan's work. 8y
Bostonmomx2 It's just my opinion but much like big pharma owns the medical industry, companies like Monsanto own big Ag and until that changes, nobody in our government can change anything. It's up to us, the consumers to fight back with our dollars. I didn't click the link, I don't have any reading energy in me today (migraine) but that's just my opinion 😉 8y
Spiderfelt Absolutely agree with @Bostonmomx2 Support your local farmer. 8y
BookishMarginalia Good point, @Bostonmomx2 -- and yes, local farmers need our support! @Spiderfelt 👍🏼 8y

Now that was a very quick read. If you are no stranger to Michael Pollan's works, then you already know that he is a great advocate for eating healthy whole foods. This book is an amalgam of guidelines to help you with your eating habits. None of them are surprising or new but many people still have trouble adopting them. This year I'm cutting out processed foods from my diet except maybe twice a month and this book has helped cement my goals.

Chores over, lunch done, baby napping, driveway cleared. Now it's time to settle down for a bit and read. Anticipating a snowed in weekend, I picked a few books from the library yesterday, of which Pollan's Food Rules is one. Excited to dive into this slim book!

I know this book is not the typical food book, but I spent so many Sunday dinners at my Italian grandparents' house (great-grandma included) that this quote always make me hungry. #mademehungry

Smrloomis I loved this quote, too. It made so much sense to me. 8y
Sue I know what this is trying to say - but my great grandparents were dirt poor and my grandfather grew up on dripping (ie solidified meat fat) sandwiches. 8y
[DELETED] 2232195534 @Sue Mine too and I understand what you mean. My grandmother meant well, but they had never had any money and saved every scrap of everything to conserve. They did do well with fish they caught and she made a good berry pie. 8y
ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled 😂 sage advice!! 8y
youngreadrshelf @Sue I know it doesn't always evoke the same feelings in all, but for me it just reminds me of family gathered around the table and enjoying each other's company with good food. 8y

2016, Book 31 "Indeed, I had a deeply unsettling moment when after spending a couple of years researching nutrition for my last book, In Defense of Food, I realised that the answer to the supposedly incredibly complicated question of what we should eat wasn't so complicated after all, and in fact, could be boiled down to just seven words: Eat Food, Not too much. Mostly plants."

#augustphotochallenge Here I am with Maira Kalman again. This simple little book with her spunky illustrations and Michael Pollan's "rules" inspired me to go vegan and make this cross stitch.

LauraBeth This is one of my all-time favorite books that I recommend to anyone who wants to start eating healthier but doesn't know where to begin. I say this mantra to myself almost daily along with "eat half, walk double". 8y
Hugoreads Those are both great mantras @LauraBeth ! I made one of these for my Doctor and she hung it up in her exam room. 8y

DebinHawaii Love it! I use those little mantras all the time! Love the cross stitch too! 👍❤️ 8y
Posemn I have the book and still haven't read it. I need to change that. I love the cross stitch. Very nice. 8y
BookishFeminist This is beautiful! What a clever idea. So great to cross stitch mantras for around the house, though my mantra is a bit different. I have one that says "Give me all the bacon and eggs you have." LOL. Hardly vegan. ? 8y
SusanInTiburon @LauraBeth are: "eat half" did you read Memento Mori? 8y
LauraBeth I haven't read that one @SusanInTiburon but it sounds interesting - do you recommend it? 8y
SusanInTiburon *are = re: 8y
SusanInTiburon @LauraBeth Actually, yes, it's funny and spooky ... But - oops - the book I had in mind is a different Muriel Spark, A Far Cry from Kensington, in which the main character loses weight by telling herself to "eat half." 8y
LauraBeth I'll read that @SusanInTiburon - sounds interesting! I got that mantra from my grandmother many years ago who used to always tell me that (and she lived to be pretty old) 😀 8y
