Apples Never Fall | Liane Moriarty
109 posts | 92 read | 6 reading | 59 to read
From the outside, the Delaneys appear to be an enviably contented family. Even after all these years, former tennis coaches Joy and Stan are still winning tournaments, and now they've sold the family business they have all the time in the world to learn how to 'relax'. Their four adult children are busy living their own lives, and while it could be argued they never quite achieved their destinies, no-one ever says that out loud. But now Joy Delaney has disappeared and her children are re-examining their parents' marriage and their family history with fresh, frightened eyes. Is her disappearance related to their mysterious house guest from last year? Or were things never as rosy as they seemed in the Delaney household?

Book 3

Apples Never Fall is an easy-to-read, enjoyable, and light mystery. A woman with grown children goes missing. Is she dead? Who killed her? It's a good, unpredictable novel by Moriarty. ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Amy once told Joy that she had no idea how lonely it felt to be single. Joy had wanted to tell her that you could still be lonely when you were married, that there had been times when she had woken up day after day crushed with loneliness, and still made breakfast for four children.
She didn't say that to Amy. She said, "Yes, darling, you're right. It must be so hard?'

My final #12BooksOf2021 was this family saga from Liane Moriarty @Andrew65 🎧❤️The audio was simply delightful and kept me engaged as I baked, cooked, cleaned and ran errands during December. This was the right blend of lightheartedness, drama, family dynamics and mystery.

This could have been really good. The last 30-ish pages though just sent it to hell in a hand basket for me. The pandemic? Really? We had to go there?! Ugh. I actually liked the rest of the book & I had serious concerns based on the mixed reviews. But those last 30 pages took this from 4⭐ to 3⭐ for me.

Liane, you‘ve done it again!!! Heart-racing. Chill-inducing. Laughing and crying and gasping. I cannot give anything away!!! 😱😱😱She has such a knack for describing people in the most human way, and for turning relatable everyday experiences and relationships into something worthy of extraordinary study. These characters were really captivating. This book is long, but every detail felt super integral!

BennettBookworm This was also the first book I‘ve read that mentioned the pandemic, as if the story took place in real time (it‘s at the end, which isn‘t spoiling anything about the plot). Did anyone else feel weird about that? I felt like I was reading about my own life and it was so strange! 3w

Totally recommend! It was such a pleasure to go on a journey with these characters. There was a lot of character building and more than enough mystery to propel the story forward. I thought there was a lot of depth and substance here, with some mystery/thriller threads to make it a fun ride.

This book was soooo good! I feel like the old Liane Moriarty whose books I loved so much before Nine Perfect Strangers is back. Some readers have said that this book was too long, but I disagree. There were so many details that seemed insignificant at first but then came back around later, and I thought it was really well done. Strong pick for me!

Definitely a tad too long, but overall I really enjoyed this one! Joy & Stan used to run a successful tennis coaching camp, while also parenting their own 4 potential tennis prodigies. But now in 2020, the business has been sold and their children long grown have no love for tennis or each other. When Joy goes missing old resentments and secrets surface. I thought the audio narration was fabulous and I really liked the family dynamics.

Joy, the matriarch of an Australian family who were brought up in the world of tennis, disappears one day and all sorts of family secrets come out into the open.

I listened to this on audio (it‘s quite a chunkster!) and thoroughly enjoyed it. It‘s reminiscent of Malibu Rising (lots of detail about minor characters as well as major ones, jumping to and fro in time) so if you liked that, you‘ll like this one too.

This story was nuts! The characters were all so quirky - made even more so by the narrator - and I really enjoyed trying to figure out what the hell was actually going on. I can‘t say that any of the characters were particularly sympathetic but I honestly didn‘t mind. Just a strange, twisty, and at times pretty sad story. 🌟🌟🌟🌟

11-10-21: My 112th finished book of 2021! The Delaneys are a tennis family. Joy and Stan, the parents, were tennis players & then coaches & raised their 4 children to play. When Joy goes missing, the Delaney siblings must rally around their father who may or may not have had something to do with it, but could it have been that strange girl Savannah who infiltrated their life the year before? A family saga told from everyone‘s point of view.

First of all, yes this book is too long. But after I got over that I did enjoy it. I was uncertain about how it would be resolved, which kept me turning the pages. It probably also helped that I like tennis so those details were good to me. The resolution of the mystery required some suspension of disbelief but I did like how she tied it all together and the ending was satisfyingly creepy.

Apples Never Fall is exactly what you‘d expect of a Moriarty novel: perfectly paced and totally readable, with town gossip and parallel timelines that keep you guessing. There‘s a cast of characters bound together, but each harbouring their own secrets. This is exactly what I'd hoped for when I picked it up: https://keepingupwiththepenguins.com/new-releases/

Moriarty is back in top form. A wrecked bicycle, a missing mother from a family whose whole lives revolved around tennis. Four children who all have hang ups. Great book. I‘ve been involved in sports a long time and so I particularly liked the focus on tennis/coaching/parents of athletes. I liked how the author occasionally moves the story along through the viewpoints of minor characters. She did a great job of showing how various family members have different recollections of past events. I also appreciated the main characters doing some self-reflection as it improved their relatability.
