An extraordinary story inspired by the real Women's Air Raid Defense, where an unlikely recruit and her sisters-in-arms forge their place in WWII history. Daisy Wilder prefers the company of horses to people, bare feet and salt water to high heels and society parties. Then, in the dizzying aftermath of the attack on Pearl Harbor, Daisy enlists in a top secret program, replacing male soldiers in a war zone for the first time. Under fear of imminent invasion, the WARDs guide pilots into blacked-out airstrips and track unidentified planes across Pacific skies. But not everyone thinks the women are up to the job, and the new recruits must rise above their differences and work side by side despite the resistance and heartache they meet along the way. With America's future on the line, Daisy is determined to prove herself worthy. And with the man she's falling for out on the front lines, she cannot fail. From radar towers on remote mountaintops to flooded bomb shelters, she'll need her new team when the stakes are highest. Because the most important battles are fought--and won--together. This inspiring and uplifting tale of pioneering, unsung heroines vividly transports the reader to wartime Hawaii, where one woman's call to duty leads her to find courage, strength and sisterhood. "Ackerman's winning historical novel is fast-paced and rife with nonstop action, romance, and suspense." --Publishers Weekly on The Lieutenant's Nurse

#ItTakesAllKinds #F&NFwithSameTopic

After reading the tagged book , a fictionalized account of the Women‘s Air Raid Defense & their work in WWII in Hawaii, I had to find & read Shuffleboard Pilots, non-fiction about the WARD. #FandNFwithSameTopic

#SummerEndReadathon #Rushathon

Finished last night for #BookedInTime WWII. I really enjoyed this & was glad to finally get it off my TBR stack. This is the third Hawaii Islands-set WWII novel I have read from this author & I loved that this one is set on Oahu so names & places are especially familiar. Learning about the Women‘s Air Raid Defense WARD) was interesting & there is friendship & romance. Engaging & not too heavy for a WWII book, ⬇️

DebinHawaii … the author‘s notes in the back inspired me to put this book on hold at the library to learn more about WARD: 7mo

#IdiomInsight

The #UpInArms idiom first appeared in the 1500s & most likely referred to arms, weapons & ammunition & someone being angry enough to grab a weapon.

For #BookedInTime Sept, we are reading WWII books & I chose this one, stacked in my #TBR about women in the Women‘sAir Raid Defense at Pearl Harbor whose job it was to track unidentified aircraft if the Pacific. The attack on Pearl Harbor had the US “up in arms” & joining in WWII.

Daisy is a wonderful character who you follow as her native Hawaii comes under attack by the Japanese and she begins training as a Radar Girl. This is a wonderful story about the women who learned the radar system, coordinated the flights around Hawaii, and looked for enemy aircraft. Just a wonderful book with a sweet little romance. Loved this book and the Hawaiian setting.

Audiobooking and late night cooking!! My youngest daughter (age 10) has recently discovered she love‘s mamas homemade roasted tomato & garlic soup. Funny she doesn‘t like onions (caramelized on the right) or tomatoes but this is the second time this week for the soup!

I absolutely love listening to audiobooks while I do things around the house or cook and this book is simply fabulous!

Another good book by Sara Ackerman about women that were trained to help WWII pilots after the attack on Pearl Harbor. It is inspired by true events. The women in the story dealt with men that didn't think they could do the job and shouldn't be there and I'm sure that is how it really was. I was invested in these characters and it felt like I was there watching all of the events happen.

For my #readhawaii I picked up this read. I loved it. I loved the storyline, the characters…the setting. It was a great read all around. What I think I enjoyed the most was the fact that each of the women seemed real. Not too perfect. #bookspin #bigjunereadathon @TheAromaofBooks @Clwojick

This book was inspired by the real WARDS (Women's Air Raid Defense) which was a top secret program replacing male soldiers in the war zone during WWII. Daisy Wilder loves horses more than people until the attack on Pearl Harbor. She joins the WARDS which many people resist but Daisy is determined to prove her worth. This book transports the reader to wartime Hawaii.

EadieB It is a tale of pioneering unsung heroines and I enjoyed reading about the women's courage, strength and sisterhood. I look forward to reading another book by Sara Ackerman as her books are about strong women. I would recommend this book to those who like to read a captivating story with a little bit of romance. 2y

Today is Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day. 𝗥𝗮𝗱𝗮𝗿 𝗚𝗶𝗿𝗹𝘀 by 𝗦𝗮𝗿𝗮 𝗔𝗰𝗸𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗻 opens on that morning, & pays homage to a brave & heroic group of women who aided in the war effort. Few have known about contribution until now. The gripping fictionalized tale is both instructive & moving. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⁣

An easy read, much lighter than a lot of the WWII fiction I‘ve read the past couple of years. The Women‘s Air Raid Defense was a real group in Hawaii, and the story deals with women who were part of that group. It‘s more a story about relationships and friendship, with mostly likable characters, along with a romance and a minor mystery in the background. Not great literature, but a diverting read.

For the first time in forever, hubby and I went to the library and browsed, rather than just pick up holds, so I have an actual #libraryhaul 😄 Now to figure out which to read first.

This didn't absolutely hook me, but I was interested and invested enough to finish. I loved the girls and their bonds, even if Daisy started a bit too "I'm a tomboy and I don't fit in!" for me. (Not so much through her own actions. Just how Ackerman wrote her.) And the setting was new for me! #historicalfiction #latergram

Loved the time spent including the cultures for both the residents of Hawaii and others. There was also a certain amount of care spent to share the effects of the war on Japanese-American descendants living on the islands. I liked that all aspects of the war from the patriotism to the horrors were included in this story. Overall, for me, the best part of Radar Girls was the female friendships developed through the stress of war and uncertainty.

Growing up in Hawaii, 𝗦𝗮𝗿𝗮 𝗔𝗰𝗸𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗻 heard stories about what life there during World War II. The Women's Air Raid Defense was established after the attack on Pearl Harbor. Local women, military wives, & mainland recruits worked radar control centers on the islands, guiding planes landing on darkened runways. Ackerman tells a fictionalized version of their bravery in 𝗥𝗮𝗱𝗮𝗿 𝗚𝗶𝗿𝗹𝘀.⁣

Another one that‘s out of my normal wheelhouse. An excellent read if you enjoy WWII fluffy semi romance, semi war story books. Learned a few new things, like the women that worked as WARDS, working the radar stations and helping to keep the Hawaiian islands safe after Pearl Harbor.

I am posting one book per day from my to-be-read collection. No description and providing no reason for wanting to read it, I just do. Some will be old, some will be new - don‘t judge me I have a lot of books.
Join the fun if you want. This is day 175.
