This was a book for LMPBC round 10. I don't normally read apocalyptic novels so it was a bit out of my comfort zone. I found the adults to be selfish and not that good at making plans or accepting what was happening, though I did love the two young people who were stoic and calm and managed to understand faster than their parents that things had changed.

How many stars can you give? This book gets all the stars. It was both magical and so very human. Loved the characters, the premise and the writing. Made me laugh, made me cry. Going off to buy her second book. #LMPBC round 10 pick @thegreensofa @LapReader can't wait for you to read it.

I struggle with characters who are so attached to their place, being a wanderer myself, so it took me a while to understand Zuri and how her attachment to her place drove her pride, and her resistance of change throughout the book. It's such a rich telling, you can almost taste the words in some of the phrases and I loved how Ms Zoboi made it a modern telling of P&P.

Just wow. It's not so much that Ms Harper writes books about crime. It's more that her books about humans have crimes included. In The Survivors she writes of a small town in Tasmania, and what happens when the death of a visitor dredges up the memories of another tragedy 12 years earlier. I really enjoyed watching the characters develop, discover things about themselves and their friends and come to terms with both the past and the present.

So it was a well written story. It had a little suspense and the setting was ideal, I also liked the various narrators and their perspectives.
I'm hoping it was meant to be a an off putting story of privilege, but I found it exceedingly difficult to care much about most of the characters, so the murder was sort of anticlimactic. I can see how it's well liked, just not my cup of tea.

So gorgeous. Real and engaging characters, truthful responses to grief and death and life.
And ending with hope.

This sucked me in immediately and didn't let go. Family, community, conspiracy, politics and beauty. So well written and engaging.

Great book for any Australian, and an opening into our country for everyone else. Tasmania is truly an amazing place.

This was a really interesting book. A book about love, innocence, belief and the very deep depravity of man. Sometimes hard to read and in a different narrative style to most other books.

This is a first person narrative of Charlotte Lucas's life with Collins, a few years after they married. It feels so real, so like the lives of women throughout the ages, in marriages they had little choice but to accept.

I very much enjoyed this book. Well written, with a beautiful melancholy of the reality of Charlotte's situation.

Catching up on chapters and it occurs to me...is Mrs Bennet about mid 40s?? They've been married for 23 years and she would have been married pretty young...have all the movies been playing her at least 10 years older than she actually is?

Never thought about it before!

This was lovely. An interesting premise, and a story of the hearts of humans and how one woman wrote about them.

Augusta is the odd sister, never fitting into her family, though she lives the best life she can in her own skin, driven by words.
Parfait is the oldest son of a Burundian family, being torn apart by war, who wants to escape.

A story of intersection, the impact of love and loss, and human relationships.

I found this book difficult to process at times. Ms Lee's experiences as a court associate, watching everyday as people such as her abuser get away with their crimes and listening to her internal struggles as she decides to bring her own case.
It is a difficult but necessary book for all of us.
Well written and important story. Thank you.
