A Completing of The Watsons
A Completing of The Watsons | Rose Servitova
33 posts | 4 read | 2 to read
"A gift for Austen fans everywhere - full of wit, informed imagination and palpable affection for Austen's characters." Natalie Jenner, author of The Jane Austen Society "Very satisfying, sometimes moving and often laugh-out-loud hilarious." The Jane Austen Regency World Magazine Can she honour her family and stay true to herself? Emma Watson returns to her family home after fourteen years with her wealthy and indulgent aunt. Now more refined than her siblings, Emma is shocked by her sisters' flagrant and desperate attempts to ensnare a husband. To the surprise of the neighbourhood, Emma immediately attracts the attention of eligible suitors - notably the socially awkward Lord Osborne, heir to Osborne Castle - who could provide her with a home and high status if she is left with neither after her father's death. Soon Emma finds herself navigating a world of unfamiliar social mores, making missteps that could affect the rest of her life. How can she make amends for the wrongs she is seen to have committed without betraying her own sense of what is right? Jane Austen commenced writing The Watsons over two hundred years ago, putting it aside unfinished, never to return and complete it. Now, Rose Servitova, author of acclaimed humour title, The Longbourn Letters: The Correspondence between Mr Collins and Mr Bennet has finished Austen's manuscript in a manner true to Austen's style and wit.

#pemberlittens #thewataonsreadalong. Thanks to all those that read The Watson‘s either the incomplete Jane Austen, this completing by Rose Servitova or another completing. I loved it and think it is my favorite of Austen‘s incomplete works. This books starts off so strong with many great characters. I feel Servitova did a good job with the completing. She maintained all the characters personalities and had them behave in ways that were 👇

MicrobeMom consistent with Austen‘s other writings and her early depictions of the characters. A few nit picky things about this version, the writing was not as expansion or explanatory as Austen‘s. So characters and their storylines were left lacking or incomplete, the Edward‘s just disappear, what happens with Miss Edward‘s and Robert, what about Miss Osborne and Lord Osborne, and Mr. Musgrave and Lady Osborne. Not mention Mr. Watson. Why was dying then 2y
MicrobeMom Just depressed. I have no doubt Austen would have made it a much longer novel with these characters and story lines more well developed. With that said, I thoroughly enjoyed the book. It was fun, well written, and ends in a very pleasing way. Thank you all again! And I looks forward to the next #pemberlittens read! 2y

Ruthiella Thanks for hosting! ❤️😃 I enjoyed the read along, though I agree, Austen would have created a more developed, better finessed final version. 2y
TheBookHippie I agree, Jane would have had more in-depth characters. It does make me a bit somber about it. Such a loss. Thank you for hosting! My library book needed back early so I had to speed read the last bit! 2y
julieclair I agree @TheBookHippie , a real loss that Austen couldn‘t finish it. At first, I had not planned to read the completed version, but I‘m glad I did. Thanks for doing such a great job hosting, @MicrobeMom ! 2y

#pemberlittens #thewatsonsreadalong #chapter27 So everyone rushes up to see Mr. Watson. He apologizes for not better providing for his daughters, but after finding out Elizabeth is to marry and Emma has 1500 lbs, he makes them aware that he is not dying. He has just been depressed? ! And wants to marry Mrs. Ellingham which he can now do! 🤷‍♀️ whaaa….

Yes for some reason I kept picturing Mr. Watson as Olivander.

Ruthiella This was a rather surprising turn of events! 2y
julieclair This was totally unexpected! So, he really isn‘t sick at all? It‘s depression, but the prospect of marrying has cured it? Wow! 2y

#pemberlitten #thewatsonsreadalong #chapter26 Ok, so I finished this morning, but I will only post one chapter a day! So Elizabeth returns with the glow of an engaged woman. She and Emma catch up on all she has missed. She encourages Emma to rethink becoming a governess when Mr. Howard shows up with a letter from his sister recommending Emma. Elizabeth goes to visit Mr Watson and Emma and Mr. Howard talk of her plans. Elizabeth returns in👇👇

#pemberlittens #thewatsonsreadalong #chapter25 It is getting very hard not to just finish this book.

Elizabeth is due to return in 2 days when Emma gets a detailed letter. Elizabeth no longer wants to marry anyone but Mr. Shaw. She tells him he has ruined her for the other men. He is shocked and then proposes. She accepts. Everyone is shocked. When the couple returns from Vienna, there will be a home for Emma.

#pemberlittens #thewatsonsreadalong #chapter24 Emma finally received her letter from Aunt O‘Brien. The aunt is appalled with Emma‘s plan to become a governess. She talked her in-debt Captain husband into giving Emma 1500 from her estate which comes to about 50 a year. This is not enough for Emma to live on but it is something. The Aunt offers to help Emma become a ladies companion which she quickly rejects. There is hope for Emma.

Ruthiella Reading the Lucy Worsley book about Austen‘s life really made me realize how important that little bit of an independent income could be to an unmarried woman! 2y
julieclair Emma must feel so relieved. At least now she has some options. But I am still very disappointed in her aunt, who really should have taken better care of Emma financially when she decided to marry again. (edited) 2y

The rumors where untrue and Mr. Howard was mistaken for Tom Musgrave. He has weaseled his way in with the Osborne. We all know it wasn‘t Mr. Howard!

#pemberlittens #thewatsonsreadalong #chapter22 Sorry for the delayed post! I was traveling yesterday. Mr. Watson is dying and things are very depressing at Stanton. #pemberlittens #thewatsonsreadalong #chapter21 Most of the chapter is devoted to a letter from Elizabeth. Mr. Shaw is on the mend and more tame since his stabbing. He and Elizabeth spend many hours talking , and they clearly love each other. But she and Emma do not believe he will marry. Penelope is distressed by her delay to Bath because of Mr. Shaw‘s assault. She is the worst! But now they will be on there way soon which means Elizabeth 👇

MicrobeMom needs land a husband soon and doesn‘t know which of her 2 suitors it will be. 2y
Ruthiella Yes! That was pretty clear to me back when they met! 😂 2y
julieclair It‘s adorable that Elizabeth is so clueless to the fact that she loves Mr. Shaw! And also so weird that she doesn‘t seem to care which one of the other 2 suitors proposes to her, just as long as she is engaged before leaving Chichester. Things were so very different back then. 2y

Mr. Tomlinson gives a sermon proclaiming the evils of Mr. Howard and Lady👇👇

#pemberlittens #thewatsonsreadalong #chapter19 Emma spent a quiet Christmas with her dad. A huge storm hits limiting travel and the post. When the post does arrive she receives a long letter from Elizabeth describing her three suitors: one is ugly, one is boring, and one is Mr. Shaw. More shockingly we learn if Mr.Howard‘s reaction to Emma is because of Penelope spreading lies. Penelope‘s told him at the hunting breakfast that Elizabeth 👇👇

MicrobeMom Was leading him but was really only interested in Lord Osborne and that she told her sisters all his secrets. Emma is very hurt and angry. But Elizabeth is determined to be married and support Emma. The next day another letter arrives saying that Mr. Shaw has been stabbed and is near death. She must extend her stay. 2y

#pemberlittens #thewatsonsreadalong #chapter18. Margaret is useless and not helping Emma care for their father. She is making plans to stay with friend over Christmas and justifies leaving Emma alone in that it will save the household money. Mr. Tomlinson visits spreading the word that his sermon vilifying female authors has been published. Emma‘s father is in dire straights. He is is very poor and the doctor suggests that he is near the end👇

MicrobeMom Mr. Tomlinson returns the next day to see if Emma has read the article and she is initially annoyed. But when he suggests she should teach about the evils of women writers, Emma has her own thoughts. She will become a governess to ease the burden on her family, and she sets her plan in motion. 2y
julieclair I am proud of her for taking control of her own life, even though it means a lowering of her social rank. How strange to think that becoming a governess will disappoint her friends and family, but they would have been totally fine with her marrying a man she did not love. 2y

#pemberlittens #thewatsonsrealong #chapter14 We are at the 1/2 way point and things are not looking good for Emma getting a husband. Mrs. Ellingham leaves as does Penelope, her husband, and the Nashes. They also take Elizabeth with them to try and get her a husband. This leaves Emma at home with Margaret and to care for her father. Before they all leave she visit Mr. Howard and Mrs. Blake. Mr. Howard is clearly avoiding Emma. She lets them 👇

Sparklemn I always find it funny how marrying a “surgeon” in those times was such a scandal. (edited) 2y

#pemberlittens #thewatsonsreadalong #Chapter1 As Emma and Elizabeth ride to the Edwards‘ so that Emma can attend a ball, we learn that Emma has just returned to the Watsons. She was raised by her Aunt. Elizabeth is quick to spill all the tea on the rake Tom Musgrave, how she wanted to marry Purvis but her sister Penelope ruined it for her. That Tom‘s affections have gone from Elizabeth to Penelope to Margaret, but he is so charming. We find

MicrobeMom Out that Penelope is scheming to marry an old rich man that is her friend uncle. Emma declares she cannot believe it and would rather be a teacher than marry without affection. Elizabeth sets her straight. 2y
MicrobeMom Elizabeth goes on the suggest that Emma‘s attitude is above her station. Emma vows to change. The sisters all se vastly different. Penelope seems like a love to hate her kind a girl while Margaret will be the meek. Elizabeth is bond to be a “spinster”! I am already hooked. 2y

Crinoline_Laphroaig I'm reading/listening to Penguins Classics. There are no Chapters. I had to go find another copy that had Chapters. 2y
eeclayton I'm reading the Project Gutenberg ebook, which is completed by one L. Oulton. 2y
Sparklemn @MicrobeMom I was so confused at first about who Penelope was when Emma said she was nervous about meeting her. I thought Penelope was just a friend of Elizabeth‘s until I realized Emma had been away for years. 2y
julieclair @MicrobeMom I‘m hooked too! I decided to order a kindle copy of the version you are reading. Like @Crinoline_Laphroaig , the first version I tried (ebook from the library) had no chapters. 2y
MicrobeMom @eeclayton how is it so far? 2y
MicrobeMom @Crinoline_Laphroaig yes my original copy is the same. I am reading the completed version first and then go to the original. So, I know where to stop. But it is hard without the chapters. 2y
MicrobeMom @Sparklemn the completed version I think helps lay it out a little better. But I cannot decide if I will love or hate Penelope. 2y
MicrobeMom @julieclair yay! I am really enjoying the completed version so far! 2y
DebinHawaii I may have to go for the e-book of completed version too (I was just being cheap with a library e-book of the original while I made up my mind) since I appear to have unintentionally finished the unfinished story last night because of course…no chapters! 🤷🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️😆 2y
julieclair @DebinHawaii Now you can enjoy the wonderful feeling of being ahead of schedule on your assignments! 😀😂 2y
DebinHawaii @julieclair Well that will certainly be a first! 🤣🤣🤣 2y
eeclayton @MicrobeMom I'm enjoying it, but the chapter breaks seem to be different from yours. 2y
