Wives and Daughters | Elizabeth Gaskell
BarkingMadRead The pic won‘t load! 4d
mcctrish I had no idea this wasn‘t finished - after all Molly went through this is the ending we get ?! 4d
See All 19 Comments
willaful SO MADDENING! How did we not know this?! I wanna see Molly happy! I wanna see Dr. Gibson slough off NotClare somehow! I guess we can watch a filmed version to get some kind of closure.. 4d
Bookwormjillk So I'm guessing she died before she finished? Too bad. Still liked this book but kind of melancholy over the ending. The characters were great in this one. 4d
peanutnine Yes I was so surprised at the abrupt end of the last chapter! But my version had an afterword that gave details about where Gaskell planned to go with the story before she died, so it was nice to know Molly gets her happy ending @mcctrish @willaful @Bookwormjillk 4d
Ruthiella @peanutnine My book had this too. It does have a HEA! 4d
Bookwormjillk @peanutnine my book had that too but it wasn‘t really clear where the information came from. But there was something about Cynthia‘s new husband being like “Wait you know Rodger???” and I got a kick out of that. 4d
eeclayton I had the afterword, too. But even without it, Mrs Gaskell set up the HEA nicely, and she was no Charlotte Brontë to kill off Roger somewhere in Africa 😂 4d
mcctrish @peanutnine mine had the afterward and thank god - I really was in a panic with how much book there was left and how much story there was to tell - but it felt too abrupt. All this ongoing story ( especially #notclare with her long winded double speak) ending with “dear reader, Roger married Molly. The end” 4d
Ruthiella @eeclayton OH MY! ??? I she had pulled a Charlotte Brontë trick like the end of Villette? ? 4d
peanutnine @eeclayton I am SO GLAD she didn't!! @mcctrish I agree, it was abrupt and I wanted all the details like we got for the whole rest of the story! I'm sure it would have been much more satisfying 4d
ElizaMarie Yes!!! Actually if I had knownn- I probably would have skipped this book because it irked me soon much!!! 4d
Clare-Dragonfly Sooooo, some of you didn‘t know that Gaskell died before finishing this book 😅 I have the edition with the ending written by her publisher but I was saving that for tomorrow! 4d
Bklover Well, I am glad for the HEA, but I would have loved to have seen Cynthia have children and love them madly! 4d
Lcsmcat @peanutnine That‘s how my edition handled it too. Still disappointed that we didn‘t get to see how Gaskell would have gotten us there. 3d
AnnCrystal @PageShifter is having the same difficulty with images. 3d
Bookwormjillk Forgot to say thanks @BarkingMadRead 3d
dabbe I‘m in the minority, but I liked how it ended with both Molly and Roger seeing one another, saying nothing, but knowing where their hearts were and where their future lay. To me, their souls said more to each other than their spoken words ever could. Thanks for hilariously leading us again, @BarkingMadRead. 😍 1d

TheAromaofBooks Thank you for guiding us through this one!! This is my second George Eliot book and I am here to say that it will also be my last 😂 What even was the point of this. 2mo
dabbe The ending infuriated me. All the pages ... on and on ... such descriptions ... blah blah blah ... then BAM! Dead in one chapter. The end. #wtf? 😳 And what kind of marriage will Lucy and Stephen have. I'd always think that his true love was Maggie. What kind of marriage can come from that? At least MIDDLEMARCH had a happy ending! 2mo
mcctrish @dabbe I am so mad!!! Maggie is smarter than her father, smarter than her brother, Philip is her intellectual match but he‘s a cripple so that‘s a no, Stephen is a lightweight and her cousin‘s choice so that‘s a no, let‘s kill her off cuz that‘s the fitting thing to do #knowyourplacegirls ENRAGED I am 2mo
KAO Stunned! It actually crossed my mind that the author was tired of this story or didn‘t know how to end it—so, ta daa! A dangerous flood occurs to shut it all down with fatal consequences! The End. Argh! Ah well, thanks for leading us through this one, @BarkingMadRead! 2mo
Ruthiella Thank you @BarkingMadRead for once again leading us through the breach! I likely would have not read this otherwise. I‘m glad to have it under my belt, even though it was a frustrating read at times. 2mo
eeclayton Joining the #wtf club. It was interesting to realize that out of the 3 times we saw Maggie in a boat, the only time she was safe was when she was threatened by the flood, floating with no male companion in the vessel. But the I still don't understand why the siblings had to be killed off like this.
Thanks @barkingmadread for leading us through another difficult read that I would probably have given up on without our lovely group 💕

Clare-Dragonfly Bleh! All the flooding and drowning was definitely foreshadowed effectively… but bleh! Thanks for leading us @TheAromaofBooks 😘 2mo
AllDebooks Wow, what a cop out of an ending. Thank you @BarkingMadRead for keeping us sane and amused through yet another chunker 😊 2mo
Leftcoastzen Thank you @BarkingMadRead all that for that ending ?😡🤬 2mo
BarkingMadRead @Leftcoastzen @AllDebooks @dabbe that ending was garbage 🙄 2mo
julieclair @AllDebooks I agree 💯. So disappointing after aaaalllllll those pages. @BarkingMadRead You are the best leader ever! 2mo
BarkingMadRead @julieclair thank you!! 2mo
kwmg40 I feel the same way as everyone else about that ending. Thank you @BarkingMadRead for hosting! I'm sorry I didn't contribute much to the discussion but I did enjoy following along with the #hashtagbrigade. 2mo

Bklover I feel bad for Marian. Forever the aunty. 4mo
BarbaraJean It was a bit anticlimactic! More dramatic vindication would have been nice. Or at least a hilarious dramatic deathbed scene with dear Uncle. I‘m just glad Pesca didn‘t have to kill Porkchop. 4mo
BarkingMadRead @BarbaraJean I definitely hoped for better deaths 🤣 4mo
mcctrish @Bookwormjillk #atleastthebadpeopledied small mercies and @BarbaraJean silver lining for Pesca 👏🏻👏🏻 4mo
Bookwormjillk @BarbaraJean good point- happy for Pesca 4mo
ElizaMarie @Bklover YES! I feel so badly for Marian. Like she was a super amazing woman, and if only she wasn't so ugly - ha! I mean, she kinda gets a happily ever after, but... only kinda? 4mo
dabbe It creeped me out how #countporkchop lusted/loved Marian. There has to be someone out there for her! But you know what? She's Wilkie's independent woman, so maybe it's fitting that she ends up happily on her own. She, Walt, and Anne were my favorites. Oh, and Pesca, too!

Thanks for another fabulous read, #hashtagbrigade and our wittiest leader, @BarkingMadRead! 🤩🙌🏻🤩
4mo
Clare-Dragonfly Heck yeah they did! I suspected that foreigner with a scar on his face might be the Brotherhood‘s vengeance but when he left the Count alone when Walt arrived at his house, I wasn‘t sure. He got the ending he deserved! 4mo
Clare-Dragonfly Does anyone remember, if Laura hadn‘t managed to produce a son, would someone else have inherited Limmeridge? Or would a daughter have done the trick? Or could she have inherited in her own right? 4mo
Ruthiella @Bklover @ElizaMarie @dabbe We can all write our own ending for Marian. I see her meeting Mr. Gilmore‘ son (or nephew or daughter or niece, whatever your flavor) and starting a beautiful partnership both personally and professionally as private detectives. 4mo
Ruthiella @Clare-Dragonfly I think she would have inherited in her own right. 4mo
TheAromaofBooks I ended up loving this one!! Thanks so much for hosting @BarkingMadRead - this one was an unexpected win for me 😂 4mo
BarkingMadRead @Ruthiella I love that ending!! @TheAromaofBooks I was pleasantly surprised as well! I really loved this one! 4mo
dabbe @Ruthiella Love this! 🤩🤩🤩 4mo
KAO I enjoyed this a lot! Thanks so much! 4mo
Leftcoastzen What a wonderful book ! Glad for the happy ending (it‘s about time) so many of the characters are so well crafted, they could have a book of their own ! Yay,Marian! Thanks @BarkingMadRead 4mo
Bklover @Ruthiella That‘s a perfect ending!! I love it! 4mo

Ruthiella Buddy, Buddy, Buddy! Marsha, Marsha, Marsha! 5mo
TheAromaofBooks Thank you for hosting!! This is one of those books I always felt like I “should“ read but never have. I didn't love it, but some of the writing was amazing. 5mo
Deblovestoread So glad to have finally read this book! 5mo
kwmg40 Perfect comment about Buddy. Thank you for hosting! I needed this group read to motivate me to start this book, which had sat on my shelves for a long time, but once I got into it, it was easy if sad reading. 5mo
Andrea313 Thanks for hosting! It's always the right time to read The Bell Jar, and I'm so glad I got to read it with this group. ❤️ 5mo
ElizaMarie Thank you all again for this wonderful group—especially @BarkingMadRead for hosting. I have wanted to read this book for a while now, and I am glad I experienced it with a group. 5mo
dabbe @Ruthiella 🤣🤣🤣 5mo
dabbe Esther truly reminded me of Holden in CATCHER IN THE RYE, and both books ended on a hopeful note--both of them hopefully on the road to recovery. I only wish Plath had been able to keep that bell jar off of her for good. 🥺 Couldn't have read this without this fantastic group, and thanks again, @BarkingMadRead, for seeing us through. 💚 5mo
DieAReader @BarkingMadRead 🤓💖Thanks for a great group read! 5mo
tpixie @BarkingMadRead thanks for hosting this event. This is a book that felt I really needed to read, and I‘m glad I was able to do it with you as a host and with other#Littens. SP did have a way with words. I could see how she was a poet in her prose. 5mo

BarkingMadRead This was rough 🤣 I was reading another book and the author used verdant and I was legit pissed 🤣 7mo
dabbe @BarkingMadRead 😂😂😂 7mo
AllDebooks Thank god for you guys, this was a tough read 🫣 7mo
TheAromaofBooks Verdant is going to give us all reading PTSD forever 😂 Thank you so much for hosting!! I didn't enjoy this one, but it was an interesting read, and I can see why it was so popular in its day. 7mo
eeclayton TGIO! Thanks @barkingmadread and #hashtagbrigade I could never have done this without you! 7mo
AnishaInkspill yeyyy, what a marathon. I didn't read this with you all and read it last year, and was really with you all, if its any cnsolation this took me months to read. 7mo
Bklover Thanks so much @BarkingMadRead ! You always make this fun!❤️❤️ 7mo
julieclair This was quite the journey! How will I ever survive without my daily dose of tears and verdure? 😂💚 Thanks for this, @BarkingMadRead , I would have never made it through on my own. 7mo
kwmg40 I don't think I would have gotten through this without the #hashtagbrigade and your encouragement, @BarkingMadRead! It was a struggle but I'm glad I finished the book, if only to check another book off my #1001 list. 7mo

CatLass007 Mina was pretty badass in the book. I don‘t remember that she was this badass in the movie. 9mo

rubyslippersreads It‘s hard for me to imagine Drac having (or deserving) a moment of peace. 9mo
rubyslippersreads I just looked at the description of the Keanu movie, and I think they borrowed that whole “vampire in search of his lost love” thing from Dark Shadows. Drac didn‘t seem particularly romantic in the novel, just out for blood. 9mo

IndoorDame I agree, such a weird note to end on. But it totally fits in with the slightly quirky vibe of the book. The whole thing reminds me of the way you remember a vacation, but written as it‘s happening instead of looking back. 10mo
Bookwormjillk So weird. I was reading this morning that this was her first book and later ones are better. Maybe worth another try.

What a long strange trip it\'s been. Thanks @barkingmadread and #HashtagBrigade

mcctrish I just finished the chapter and was startled to see it‘s the end, I said it out loud “oh, that‘s it?” Surely a weird way to end I agree @IndoorDame but I‘m happy to be done with this strange group of holidayers ( happy too that the final poke at Kerr happened ) 10mo

Ruthiella But kudos to Mr. Benson for dressing Donne/Bellingham down and shutting the door in his face. I think Gaskell wrote the whole novel so she could get away with that condemnation of the penis that started it all. 11mo
BarkingMadRead @Ruthiella 🤣🤣🤣 11mo
Cuilin @Ruthiella Yes!!!! I loved the dress down!! 11mo
Clare-Dragonfly @Ruthiella Hahaha, yes! Benson is perfection in this chapter. Still so sad though 😭😭😭 Definitely makes me want to read the rest of Gaskell‘s books—I‘ve only read two others. 11mo
Bookwormjillk @Clare-Dragonfly me too. I think next year will be a Gaskell binge year for me. 11mo
BarkingMadRead @Clare-Dragonfly @Bookwormjillk we will have to add some to next year‘s schedule 11mo
dabbe I'm going to try to look at this positively. The hero of a story usually saves or changes the community for the better. Look what Ruth did and how her village changed because of her--even Bradshaw! Unfortunately, she was a sacrificial hero, but Leonard will be okay and turn out well. I hope. 🤞 11mo
julieclair @dabbe I love your positivity! 😊 11mo
dabbe @julieclair 🤩😂😘 11mo
