#pemberlittens #thewatsonsreadalong #Chapter1 As Emma and Elizabeth ride to the Edwards‘ so that Emma can attend a ball, we learn that Emma has just returned to the Watsons. She was raised by her Aunt. Elizabeth is quick to spill all the tea on the rake Tom Musgrave, how she wanted to marry Purvis but her sister Penelope ruined it for her. That Tom‘s affections have gone from Elizabeth to Penelope to Margaret, but he is so charming. We find

MicrobeMom Out that Penelope is scheming to marry an old rich man that is her friend uncle. Emma declares she cannot believe it and would rather be a teacher than marry without affection. Elizabeth sets her straight. 2y
MicrobeMom Elizabeth goes on the suggest that Emma‘s attitude is above her station. Emma vows to change. The sisters all se vastly different. Penelope seems like a love to hate her kind a girl while Margaret will be the meek. Elizabeth is bond to be a “spinster”! I am already hooked. 2y

Crinoline_Laphroaig I'm reading/listening to Penguins Classics. There are no Chapters. I had to go find another copy that had Chapters. 2y
eeclayton I'm reading the Project Gutenberg ebook, which is completed by one L. Oulton. 2y
Sparklemn @MicrobeMom I was so confused at first about who Penelope was when Emma said she was nervous about meeting her. I thought Penelope was just a friend of Elizabeth‘s until I realized Emma had been away for years. 2y
julieclair @MicrobeMom I‘m hooked too! I decided to order a kindle copy of the version you are reading. Like @Crinoline_Laphroaig , the first version I tried (ebook from the library) had no chapters. 2y
MicrobeMom @eeclayton how is it so far? 2y
MicrobeMom @Crinoline_Laphroaig yes my original copy is the same. I am reading the completed version first and then go to the original. So, I know where to stop. But it is hard without the chapters. 2y
MicrobeMom @Sparklemn the completed version I think helps lay it out a little better. But I cannot decide if I will love or hate Penelope. 2y
MicrobeMom @julieclair yay! I am really enjoying the completed version so far! 2y
DebinHawaii I may have to go for the e-book of completed version too (I was just being cheap with a library e-book of the original while I made up my mind) since I appear to have unintentionally finished the unfinished story last night because of course…no chapters! 🤷🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️😆 2y
julieclair @DebinHawaii Now you can enjoy the wonderful feeling of being ahead of schedule on your assignments! 😀😂 2y
DebinHawaii @julieclair Well that will certainly be a first! 🤣🤣🤣 2y
eeclayton @MicrobeMom I'm enjoying it, but the chapter breaks seem to be different from yours. 2y

This was a used book, clearly. But all I can think about when I‘m reading this is my college professor who used to say, “if you are highlighting the entire chapter, you are not actually understanding anything”.🤣 #pemberlittens #chapter1

StayCurious There‘s a fun scene in Schitt‘s Creek where Alexis is highlighting her entire college textbook and David subtly/not so subtly teases her about it 😀 2y

#wanderingthroughwutheringheights #pemberlittens #chapter1
Today we meet Mr. Lockwood our narrator and the tenant of Mr. Heathcliff. Heathcliff is brooding, rude, and untidy but intelligent. Joseph the butler is very old. Mr. Lockwood enters Wuthering Heights which sounds scary, old, and gothic. He is frightened by Heathcliff‘s dogs, and then they drink some wine. Somehow he wants to visit again tomorrow.

Crinoline_Laphroaig Still not sure why he wants to go back. 😆 2y
megnews And plans to visit tomorrow despite being unwanted! 2y
mollyrotondo @megnews exactly! Lockwood just doesn‘t get it 🤦🏻‍♀️😆 2y

And we're off #WanderingThroughWutheringHeights!
First impressions #Pemberlittens?

Mine: I plan to listen to Audible the most so I'm really glad it Joanne Froggatt. She has a perfect voice for Narration.

I will post Daily and Tag the Group in the comments. (Will try to do this earlier but it's the Monday after a Holiday Weekend.) Feel free to join in the discussion here or make your own posts. #Chapter1

Crinoline_Laphroaig @sprainedbrain I'm really hoping you chime in with the Memes and @DebinHawaii with the Haikus 🤞🏻 2y

Crinoline_Laphroaig In a Crossover with @jenniferw88 PemberLittens Buddy Read I'm in curious to compare Darcy & Heathcliff. 'Darcy is redefined as a brooding hero mentioned with Heathcliff but that‘s not how Jane or Elizabeth see him. When Elizabeth thinks him arrogant she is not attracted to him. She falls in love once she sees him being good to people....She isn't secretly attracted to dark and brooding.'

2y
Bookwormjillk This is my first read and I was surprised by the first person point of view. I don‘t know why, but I was 🤷‍♀️ 2y
Crinoline_Laphroaig @Bookwormjill my 1st read as well. My only expectation is Heathcliff being surly.😆 2y
suvata Chapter 1 sets up a gothic environment (disturbing engravings in the architecture) and we meet Heathcliff who also may be a little menacing himself. (edited) 2y
bio_chem06 I can‘t wait to get home and read! 2y
ElizaMarie @Bookwormjillk I am listening to this one (my first time) and the first person point of view initially confused me because the narrator (whom I love) is a woman and so yeah 2y
Crinoline_Laphroaig @suvata it definitely feels Gothic. 2y
TheAromaofBooks I haven't read this one since I was probably 14 or 15, when I absolutely hated it haha So I'm interested to see if my opinion has changed now that I'm quite a lot older!! 2y
EclecticBookLover Very atmospheric. Lately t's been very grey and rainy where I live so it feels like a good time to read this. 2y
MicrobeMom The description of Joseph always makes me laugh! This is a book with little humor, so I always like to point it out. 2y
inthegreensandblues I've read this once before, about ten years ago, and kind of hated it. But I think it may partly have been that it didn't match my expectations. Now that I know what it IS, I'm hoping that I'll enjoy it more this time. And getting other's takes each day will be great! 2y
mom2bugnbee I've never read this one! Looking forward to it. I, too, am listening to Joanne Frogett - love her! We're doing a chapter a day, yes? 2y
Crinoline_Laphroaig @mom2bugnbee yes Chapter a Day. I'll add you to my list for the group tag. 2y
Crinoline_Laphroaig @EclecticBookLover it's cold here to perfect by the fire read. 2y
Crinoline_Laphroaig @inthegreensandblues I'm thinking Chapter a Day won't be to bad. 2y
Crinoline_Laphroaig @MicrobeMom these are definitely some moody people. 2y
Crinoline_Laphroaig @TheAromaofBooks I've read the Synopsis I'm pretty sure I'm still going to be Team Darcy at the end of this reading. 2y
mom2bugnbee @Crinoline_Laphroaig I'm in your tags - sorry! I read them in reverse order. 🤦🏻‍♀️ 2y
Crinoline_Laphroaig @mom2bugnbee no worries! It's a little bit confusing with 3 PemberLittens reads going on right now. 2y
mollyrotondo Definitely would like to be added to this discussion! I read the preface in my Penguin Classics edition and it pointed out that most people expect a romance story. But it‘s really more of a Romantic period story. I‘ve never read this one before so I‘m excited to try to keep my attention on this point. @Crinoline_Laphroaig I also feel like I will be remain team Darcy by the end of this one 😆 but I‘m expecting to like this book! 2y
mollyrotondo Lockwood also seems to be a bit of a dope. A cockeyed optimist maybe. He has such hopes for a friendly relationship with his neighbor that he is totally ignoring Heathcliff‘s true nature. Heathcliff seems simply cruel. 2y
Crinoline_Laphroaig @mollyrotondo I'm adding you to the group tag! Definitely agree on Lockwood and Heathcliff. 2y
witchyreader13 I love classic Literature & gothic tales. Jane Eyre is actually my favorite book. But I've put this book off for years because it sounded like I would hate the main characters & I was afraid I'd hate the book because of them. However, I am now a couple of chapters in & feel engaged in the story, despite Heathcliff being an a$$. 😄 Loving the gothic atmosphere. Can't wait to continue. 😃 2y
Crinoline_Laphroaig @witchyreader13 I like Jane Eyre. Need to read something by Anne to round out the Sisters. 2y
LitStephanie @mollyrotondo totally agree about Lockwood but also really enjoyed the humor of his super socially awkward first meetings with the Heathcliff household. I love how he thinks of himself as a hermit but has zero respect for Heathcliff's wishes to be left alone. 😆 2y

I‘m excited to get back to chapter-a-day read alongs. This is actually a first read for me!

I‘m already enjoying the tone that is being set in chapter one. The satire is clear and I‘m ready to see where it takes us.

Smarkies I am too! I read it when I was young and this is one of Austen's books that I did not reread after that. Loving it already. 3y

Starting this one again since I noped out of the audiobook after like 5 minutes. Some people need to realize that character voices are not a necessary part of the experience. #marieantoinetteserialkiller #marieantoinette #katiealender #bookstagram #blue #audiobook #chapter1

Let‘s have no more argument. I have chosen Mr Baggins and that ought to be enough for all of you. If I say he is a Burglar, a Burglar he is, or will be when the time comes. There is a lot more in him than you guess, and a deal more than he has any idea of himself. You may (possibly) all live to thank me yet.
