Twist of a Knife
Twist of a Knife | Anthony Horowitz
33 posts | 20 read | 1 reading | 6 to read
In New York Times bestselling author Anthony Horowitz's ingenious fourth literary whodunit following The Word is Murder, The Sentence is Death, and A Line to Kill, Horowitz becomes the prime suspect in a murder investigation--and only one man can prove his innocence: his newly estranged partner in solving crime, Detective Hawthorne."I'm sorry but the answer's no." Reluctant author, Anthony Horowitz, has had enough. He tells ex-detective Daniel Hawthorne that after three books he's splitting and their deal is over. The truth is that Anthony has other things on his mind. His new play, a thriller called Mindgame, is about to open at the Vaudeville Theater in London's West End. Not surprisingly, Hawthorne declines a ticket to the opening night. The play is panned by the critics. In particular, Sunday Times critic Margaret Throsby gives it a savage review, focusing particularly on the writing. The next day, Throsby is stabbed in the heart with an ornamental dagger which turns out to belong to Anthony, and has his fingerprints all over it.Anthony is arrested by an old enemy . . . Detective Inspector Cara Grunshaw. She still carries a grudge from her failure to solve the case described in the second Hawthorne adventure, The Sentence is Death, and blames Anthony. Now she's out for revenge.Thrown into prison and fearing for both his personal future and his writing career, Anthony is the prime suspect in Throsby's murder and when a second theatre critic is found to have died in mysterious circumstances, the net closes in. Ever more desperate, he realizes that only one man can help him.But will Hawthorne take the call?

Horowitz asks for Hawthorne's help to keep him out of prison - Horowitz is accused of killing the critic that panned his new play. The mystery is good, the writing is good, and the relationship between Horowitz and Hawthorne is great (it keeps me coming back for more). Overall a very good read!

Horowitz‘ Hawthorn series, in which the author is a character, is fun fluff. In each book, Tony the character and the reader learn a little bit more about the reclusive detective. In this one, Tony is accused of murdering a critic who gave his play a bad review and while he was hoping to cut ties with Hawthorn, now he desperately needs his help to prove his innocence.

Ruthiella @BiblioLitten You will probably also enjoy his Hawthorne series also! I also liked Magpie Murders and 7mo

1. 🔪💀🕵️‍♀️for the tagged book

2. I‘m looking forward to the next Jackson Brodie novel “Death at the Sign of the Rook” by Kate Atkinson

3. I recently recommended “The Calculating Stars” by Mary Robinette Kowal to a friend. I think she‘d appreciate its feminist and scientific slant.

That...is not how I want to end a book feeling. The victim was so incredibly malicious to every person she ever encountered. You'd think that would make the death satisfying or at least less upsetting for the reader, but when you spend so much time hearing about how nasty she was, it's just dispiriting.
1/?

Robotswithpersonality 2/? The murderer was someone who survived an unjustly harsh prison sentence, got their life together and saw it threatened to disintegrate again, and then it DID. 9mo
Robotswithpersonality 3/? The 'Native American' characterization (by a white author) made me uncomfortable (the audiobook narrator didn't help); I have no idea what Indigenous readers might think of it. He's had a tough upbringing but he's doing well, except he's fighting with his wife and he's spontaneously angry enough to be thoughtlessly violent? If he wasn't just another murder suspect, maybe it would feel like a fully fleshed out flawed human being instead of a suspect detail or two mixed in with something socially conscious. Maybe Horowitz was trying to be compassionate or just diverse in characters, but I'm not sure it landed? 9mo
Robotswithpersonality 4/? Having the protagonist in the hot seat as the suspect is NOT why I read this series.
The crumb of further reveal about Hawthorne's backstory was not worth sitting through so much of this.
9mo
Robotswithpersonality 5/? Cara Grunshaw and lackey are unrelentingly unpleasant people that I wish we didn't keep coming back to; having Hawthorne best them in the end is not a satisfying enough reason to hear from and about them throughout the book.
I just spent way too much of this book not having a good time.
9mo
Robotswithpersonality 6/6 I think the next book is the final test for me: if there's a bit more about Hawthorne, if Anthony can get back to his regular Watsonian position, if we can take another break from Grunshaw, if at least some 'guest stars' can be something other than off-putting, I'll continue in the series. I started these books not really knowing why I was continuing, a definite maybe, but I'm getting closer to a firm 'no'. 9mo

Not feeling that good today so stayed in bed and finished this book. I‘m more familiar with Anthony Horowitz and his kids books. I think this is my 2nd adult novel I‘ve read. Very entertaining. I love his style of putting himself in the book and making it feel real with facts from his literary life. Agatha Christie style ending. I‘d read another if it comes my way.

The Hawthorne and Horowitz series have been a blast! I love Hawthorne‘s sarcastic humor and dry personality. The murder mysteries are always engaging and keep me guessing. The Twist of a Knife opens with Hawthorne proposing ideas for more books from his older investigations. Horowitz digs his heels in and refuses. Horowitz invites Hawthorne to the opening night of his play and Hawthorne declines.

The central plot strand is one that a few detective series have at one point now (the first I remember it being in was Morse) and I don‘t like it as a plot device, but it‘s still a really good book, I still didn‘t guess whodunnit, and I still want to read the sequel when he‘s written it! The fact / fiction mix continues right into the acknowledgements section and still unsettles me quite a lot, which I guess is the intention!

Not my favorite in this series, but still entertaining, mostly because Rory Kinnear‘s audiobook narration is perfection. All good fun.

My haul from this week's Book Sorting. Strangely, I'd just added The Making of a Racist to my stack this week, and lo, it appeared.

dabbe Ooh, he's a hard one to put down once you start reading. 😊 2y
Aimeesue @dabbe True! Except. . . At the start of this one, Horowitz names a lot of plays he saw in his youth which inspired him, and he mentioned Sleuth, which had been filmed in the 70s starring Lawrence Olivier and Michael Caine, so I had to look it up and see if it was online, and it was, so I started watching and two hours later I'm still in the second chapter of The Twist of a Knife. 😂 (edited) 2y
dabbe @Aimeesue 🤣🤣🤣 That is a great movie! I consider movies sorta like reading a book, right? If you listen to an audiobook, and it counts as “reading“ a book, then seeing a story should also count! 🤗 2y
Aimeesue @dabbe I like the way you think! I‘m gonna count it! 😂 2y

I thought I reviewed this, but don‘t see it. Take two…

I really like this series and this just might be my favorite. The technique the author uses of writing himself into the story is fun and creative. It really draws you into the story. The audiobook narrator, Rory Kinnear, does a great job bringing the characters to life.

After four books, I still cannot decide if I even like Hawthorne; he‘s irascible and annoying. This time Anthony is accused of murder, and Hawthorne is on the case. There‘s a good deal of evidence against Horowitz. Did he actually do it? #audiowalk

I can never resist a new Anthony Horowitz novel, so when this became available on ScribD, I downloaded it immediately and made it my new walking book. Hawthorne wants Horowitz to write a new book about him, but Horowitz objects saying he only agreed to a 3 book contract and there haven‘t been any murders anyway. Of course, you know what happens next. There‘s a storm coming through, so I got my walk in this morning. #audiowalk

#readingbracket2022 for November is going to one of my favorite auto-buy authors, Anthony Horowitz and his newest book, “The Twist of a Knife”. Horowitz has such a gift for bringing his characters to life, I laughed and gasped while reading this one and cannot wait for the next installment 🙌

CBee I keep thinking I need to read some Horowitz. Any you‘d recommend I start with? 2y
Aims42 @CBee He has so many books that I haven‘t read, but I have LOVED his two newest series and would recommend either 😁

• The ‘Susan Ryland‘ series starts with “Magpie Murders”

Hawthorne & Horowitz #4 was a total surprise when I heard it came out this week. I typically like to read Horowitz rather than listen but this series is an exception since it‘s read by the lovely and talented Rory Kinnear - I burned through this one in 2 days. If you like the others in this series, you‘ll like this one, too, I‘m sure. I thought it was lots of fun and beautifully performed as always.

You know my toxic trait? I impatiently wait for a new book by one of my favorite authors and then I devour it and now I‘m back to waiting for their next book 🤦‍♀️ Anthony Horowitz‘s newest installment of “Hawthorne Investigates” is an A+! I loved everything about it, especially the banter between Hawthorne and Grundshaw is amazing! I say drop what you‘re reading and pick up this new release ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

KathyWheeler He has become a favorite author for me. I‘m listening to Moonflower Murders right now and can‘t wait for this one. 2y
Aims42 @KathyWheeler I really liked Moonflower Murders too! That‘s the other series by him that are auto-buy books 😁 2y
EvieBee I am doing the exact same thing right now! First on the library list for all three medias (I know, I‘m wrong for that) and then that‘s it until next November. Sigh. 2y
Aims42 @EvieBee I‘ve totally reserved all the media types of a book before (even Large Print 😬)! When the need is real, it‘s real, no shame! This one was real good, totally worth requesting allllllllll the medias 👍 2y

This is the fourth in this mystery series, where Horowitz blends reality and fiction in a wonderfully clever way. I always find myself on Google to discover what is real and what was created by the author. This one revolves around the theatre where Horowitz's actual play ('Mindgame') is being produced. When he finds himself the primary suspect in a murder, he needs Hawthorne's help. This is a smart mystery told with a touch of humour. 4.25/5

LiteraryinPA I'm so excited for this one! Horowitz is an auto-read author for me, though he writes so much that he's no longer an auto-BUY author, so I've put in my library hold. 😋 2y
Mpcacher @LiteraryinLawrence I agree...I am impressed with how his mind works. Have you been watching Magpie Murders on television? I am enjoying it, but also loving the little talks he gives after every episode. 2y

49/22 Whenever one of these faux memoirs comes out I jump straight on the audio book. There is something about them I find very comforting in a murdery kind of way. Maybe because they are set places I usually know so well, maybe because I‘m a sucker for an mockumentary, and this is the closest I can get in mystery form. Anyway, it was another pleasant way to spend a few hours and I didn‘t guess the end which always makes me happy.
