Book 6/12 on the Walter Scott prize longlist. This was an excellent LGBTQ+ historical piece of fiction incorporating Oscar Wildes trial. All the books I‘ve read from this list so far have been brilliant! I‘ve rated them all 4 🌟.
After seeing the mediocrity of the Women‘s prize longlist I shall be focusing on this and the WP non fiction list which I‘m halfway through and have enjoyed every book so far

Set in the late 1800s this book is about, to use the character's words, sexual inverts. Excellent character development; while the characters weren't always likable, through the author's writing I had empathy for them. There was enough suspense to the ending that I wanted to keep reading even when I was falling asleep late at night.

This was a realistic, nuanced, heartbreaking tale of queer life at the turn of the 20th century. Characters were three dimensional- sympathetic and frustrating. Would recommend

I tried, but I just cannot get into this. The writing isn‘t interesting me at all—it feels bloated and as though it‘s spinning in circles, with no plot and no character development. I‘m out.

The arrest of Oscar Wilde in the late 1800's Britian serves as the backdrop of the historical fiction. As obscenity laws are enforced, two queer high society gentlemen and closeted family men pen a book in defense of progressive gay love while challenging the social and political landscape of the time. Inspired by the real work of LGBTQ+ history, this lyrical novel of reflects of world that in not yet ready for change.

I really enjoyed this. Crewe gives us an intimate look at the lives of two men in 1894 England who challenge the status quo. Told in beautiful, assured prose, I loved the feel of being London during this time, with all the sounds, smells & textures. Frank & sensual, it shows different ways of living & how oppressive society was especially for women & the laws against homosexuality. Love endures despite this, in poignant scenes that resonate today.

Was on the fence about this one, but the 99p always wins.

Homophobia in Victorian England against the backdrop of the Oscar Wilde trial. Two writers research and write about homosexuality while trying to have meaningful lives of their own. The narration by Freddie Fox really made this for me.

I think I admired this more than I enjoyed it. It‘s a rather “quiet” novel and I had to be in a VERY particular headspace to pick it up. The author is undeniably talented and committed to his research. I think I‘ll be mulling over this one for quite some time.

This was sort of a slow burn. But it's well written and the subject is interesting. 2 writers publish a book about sexual inversion in the wake of Oscar Wilde's imprisonment. And I love this cover. 💛🖤

Loved the writing of this historical fiction novel set in 1894 during the Oscar Wilde trials. The sex is very explicit. I cared about the characters and found the debate about Homosexuality in the victorian era compelling. Great on audio. 4 🌟

Trying to read my #netgalley books in order and keep up with pub dates; this came out last week in the UK so nearly made it!

At the end of the 19th Century, at the time of Oscar Wilde‘s trial, two men collaborate on a book entitled ‘Sexual Inversion‘. Although both married to women they consider themselves ‘inverts‘, in different ways.

I found this slow at the start and lost interest in the speeches and book extracts, but found it ⬇️
