It's 2017 at the University of Arkansas. Millie Cousins, a senior resident assistant, wants to graduate, get a job and buy a house. A fresh and intimate portrait of desire, consumption and reckless abandon, Come and Get It is a tension-filled story about money, indiscretion and bad behavior - and the highly anticipated new novel by acclaimed and award-winning author Kiley Reid. I read this one over the summer (so behind on reviews). It was ok, an interesting book about class, money, race, power dynamics. I liked her first book more. Her books definitely try to make you think more about situations that can arise & the bigger dynamics within society.

I really like “Such A Fun Age”. I hope I really like this one too. But the current 67% rating has me nervous.

I‘m also assuming that stories will never take place during 2020 again. Or at least for a long while.

I‘m really surprised by the tepid response to this one, as I really liked it. It‘s quieter than her debut and quite nuanced, with every character showing their flaws and making bad choices in a way that feels fully human. A great read for me that was hard to put down.

I know what this book is supposed to be about.
Or at least, what the reviews and interviews claim.

But the “point” didn‘t really land for me.

This was my #BookSpin and I‘m giving it a soft pick. At first I didn‘t like it at all because it took forever to introduce all the characters and I couldn‘t figure out what she was doing with them. The climax of the story is absolutely crazy and I did not expect it at all. I think she‘s trying to make a point about money, power dynamics, and bad choices but it got very messy. I‘m still thinking about it, so that seems worth something.

Welp! Another disappointing sophomore effort. There were elements I really enjoyed, but this felt like it could have used more cooking before serving. I will still eagerly read whatever she writes next.

This was a so so character driven story about a college dorm and the RAs and students who live there and a visiting writing professor it was a slog until about 2/3. Honestly none of the characters were likable

Kiley Reid is an excellent author. I enjoyed the character development and the unpredictable plot. The theme of racism was woven throughout in a subtle way. I was finding ways to sneak in reading it as I was so drawn in. Highly recommend along with her first novel, Such a Fun Age.

Once again I was up all night reading. I think this character driven novel might work better as a tv show. Every character makes terrible choices at every turn, it keeps the pages turning. Not sure the pay off at the end was impactful enough for me.

Disappointing after Reid‘s first novel Such a Fun Age. This one is set in a college dorm, with an RA, bratty undergrads, and a journalist/visiting professor. All parties engage with each other and morally ambiguous shenanigans ensue. Mostly a commentary on class, wealth, status, and who‘s taking advantage of whom. I wasn‘t over the moon for it but it wasn‘t terrible either. Great audio narration though!

A character driven novel told from the view of three women in Arkansas that really captures the atmosphere of college campus dorm life. And with interesting cultural commentary throughout, as Kiley Reid does. Felt her debut was stronger than this second novel, but I like her writing.

This was an interesting character study of a time and place and young people finding their way in a confusing world. It felt a bit all over the place though and I found myself reluctant to pick it up. It had moments of brilliance as it considered how race, money, and privilege intersect, but it fell short of the mark for me. #netgalleygroup #BookspinBingo @AllDebooks @TheAromaofBooks

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Very character-driven, but the characters were just so interesting it kept me hooked! I work with college students, so I found the messiness and complexities of this slice of campus life particularly compelling. Unexpected and cringeworthy at times, this book offers sharp observations and a reminder that we‘re all more than our worst mistakes. The audiobook narrator is also amazing. 🎧

DimeryRene So happy you liked it! I have been hearing mixed reviews. It‘s on my list to get to soon. 10mo
ICantImReading @DimeryRene it‘s always so interesting to see different opinions on polarizing books! If you like audiobooks, I do think the narration really heightened the experience 🙂 10mo

I was quite unsure where Reid was headed with this for most of the book. While I enjoyed her unspooling these characters‘ messy connections, I felt the ending was a bit abrupt.

Millie is an RA in an undesirable dorm. She helps a visiting professor interview a few students for a book she has planned. But when that project gets sidetracked, everyone starts making poor decisions: Millie, the prof, the popular students, and a loner with a dark past.

marleed I felt the same way. I did enjoy reading it but it was a bit of a mess! I really can envision those characters in a limited series, though! 11mo

From the celebrated New York Times bestselling author of Such a Fun Age comes a fresh and provocative story about a residential assistant and her messy entanglement with a professor and three unruly students.

Slow pick - less as a novel but as an outline for a potential limited series with a renewal option. I was drawn to the University of Arkansas setting - unusual location for my armchair travels. There were two interestingly drawn MC‘s (Agatha and Millie). Thing is, they were fighting for word count because there were many supporting characters that with just a tweak here or there could have bumped either MC out of their star billing.

Melismatic I loved her other book - this is def on the list for me! 11mo
marleed @Melismatic I really liked her first book, as well. This one didn‘t hit the same way, but it really helped when I decided to just enjoy the characters. 11mo

This was a bit of a mess. It really needed better editing - it felt like Reid had just taken all of her character notes and back stories and thrown them together, without thought to a coherent plot.

The ‘plot‘, such as it is, centres around a visiting professor eavesdropping on students (very bizarre) and, whilst some of the plot points are tied up at the end, many of them aren‘t.

Rather disappointing.

I laughed so hard at the dialogue. Kiley Reid is a genuinely funny person. I related entirely too well to the southern university students that said such cringeworthy things. If I took myself too seriously I probably would have hated this book, instead I just laughed for being a white girl from the south with too many friends named Becca. I was on the edge of my seat to learn what would happen to these characters and I loved the ending. #Arc
