Northanger Abbey (Cranford Collection)
Northanger Abbey (Cranford Collection) | Jane Austen
33 posts | 2 read
A Limited Edition from the Cranford Collection! Beautifully embossed with a gold gilding on a hardback cloth binding for the cover.
Obsessed with Gothic fiction, seventeen-year-old Catherine Morland is wintering in Bath when she encounters dashing gentleman Henry Tilney and the charismatic Thorpe siblings. Swept up by the high society she has found herself in, Catherine and her overactive imagination lead her into numerous comical misunderstandings with the Tilney family. Northanger Abbey boldly and humorously explores society in Regency-era England.

#Pemberlittens my final quote: "I leave it to be settled by whomsoever it may concern, whether the tendency of this work be altogether to recommend parental tyranny, or reward filial disobedience." FINIS

It's been an absolute joy to reread Northanger Abbey. I love Chapter a Day Readalongs because you savour a story. I always discover something new. Answers in comments.

Crinoline_Laphroaig 1️⃣ According to Goodreads, this is my 6th time reading since 2017. I'm sure I've read it more than that. I love it every time. Mostly I read print. Few chapters of audio. Juliet Stevenson does a wonderful job.

2️⃣ My love of Henry Tilney is well documented.

3️⃣ Henry coming to make sure Catherine is okay and propose. And of course the Garden Tour. I do love a garden tour. 👇
2w
Crinoline_Laphroaig 4️⃣ “The person, be it gentleman or lady, who has not pleasure in a good novel, must be intolerably stupid.” See 3rd picture for proof of my love.

5️⃣ Technically I should have made this a curricle. Take the ride, get carriage sick and throw up on Dude Bro Thorpe. Perhaps this will end his affections.

6️⃣ Snooping! Henry will forgive me. 👇
2w
Crinoline_Laphroaig 7️⃣ In this instance since Fred is the heir, that would mean that Isabella would have power over me. So give her to James. The fool deserves her for bullying Catherine.

8️⃣ I'll be having a nice pleasant tea at Woodston with Eleanor, Catherine, and Henry. We will talk books. I'll try not to sigh every time Henry speaks. 👇

Crinoline_Laphroaig 9️⃣ I love how the Instagram NA Group Chat came up with fun names.
Pick Me Princess Isabella
Dude Bro John Thorpe
The Fool - James Moreland
And General Stinky - Tilney

Can you just imagine 20 years on, Catherine getting a silly idea, and Henry saying ‘Remember that time you thought my father murdered my mother? 😆

2w
willaful He will hold it over her just like I do my husband putting the raw chicken away in a drawer 40 years ago. 😂 2w
Crinoline_Laphroaig @willaful if you've been together any length of time, you got one of these. 😆 2w

"Some explanation on his father‘s account he had to give; but his first purpose was to explain himself, and before they reached Mr. Allen‘s grounds he had done it so well, that Catherine did not think it could ever be repeated too often" Henry Tilney‼️?

Poor Catherine!

I've throughly enjoyed reading a chapter a day with group. I am going to finish reading today so I can post Discussion Questions tomorrow. Will continue to share daily quotes the rest of the month.

This chapter always makes me angry. General putting Catherine out of the house. Sending her home with any escort. Single women didn't travel without at least man servant. Plus Catherine is young, she's never been anywhere. Thankfully Elinor thinks to ask if Catherine has money for the trip.

“If I understand you rightly, you had formed a surmise of such horror as I have hardly words to——Dear Miss Morland, consider the dreadful nature of the suspicions you have entertained." - Henry Tilney

We all know where Catherine got her ideas from. I glad Henry called her out for skulking but I also find the "Remember that we are English," part hilarious.

I love this chapter not for the plot but for the garden tour!

My Kitchen Garden is looking quite lovely. ??‍?

I think it's fun the difference between a quiz today vs Northanger Abbey. You can play here: https://janeausten.co.uk/blogs/the-jane-austen-quiz/which-regency-style-is-for-y...

CrowCAH How fortuitous that I‘ll be reading this book for my library‘s book club discussion early in June, so I get to read it in May! I‘ll join the chapter a day readalong, once I finish my current ebook. No worries, I‘ll be able to catch up ☺️ 1mo
Crinoline_Laphroaig @CrowCAH that's perfect! I'm loving how many Jane things I have going on. I'm also doing this NA Readalong with non Litsy friends on Instagram. I've join in several events from Jane Austen's House. And I couldn't find a Chapter A Day Jane book so I'm doing my own in a journal and posting to my Facebook so I will have some Jane everyday in my Facebook memories. 1mo
CrowCAH @Crinoline_Laphroaig sounds wonderful! 🥰 I have my book club reading a JA variation this month. My library is doing an event in June. I joined JASNA this year and near me is an active local chapter; I‘m looking forward to handing out with some Janeites!!! 1mo
