Hilary travels to post war France to look for his 5 year old son, who he has last seen when the boy was just a baby. In an orphanage he will meet a little boy who might be his son. Shall he recognize him? Shall he know whether the boy is indeed his son when he sees him? Shall he be able to love the child?

A portrait of France in ruins and of a man who thinks he can‘t love anymore after the years of the war.

Anna40 Sounds very sad 4y
BarbaraBB @Anna40 It is, though it‘s an easy read. I‘m not sure what to think! 4y
LeahBergen Lovely review! I need to get to this one soon. 4y

Having escaped occupied paris Hillary knows his wife died at the hands of the gestapo, a visitor tells him that their new born child was lost. In 45 he returns to a France torn apart by mistrust, hunger and post war devastation to try and discover if an orphan is his son unsure if he wants the emotional upheaval or should leave the boy lost. Told with sensitivity this a picture of a nation recovering, a man in turmoil + the fate of orphans.

TrishB Great review 👍🏻 4y
EvieBee Yaaas! Persephone. I‘ll have to pull this one off the shelf. 4y

Sublime. Simply but beautifully written, emotionally driven. I loathed the protagonist in this, yet wept at the ending. Perfectly captures the chaos and grief caused in the aftermath of war.

Set in post-war England, life is anything but peaceful. Hillary is a widower and his young son has been lost for 5 years. As Hillary embarks on a search to find the boy he doesn‘t know, he struggles to confront his feelings on how to move forward if he does indeed find little John, and if that‘s truly what he wants after all. So many emotions packed into this one!!

Cinfhen Pretty pic and lovely review 💗 5y
Kalalalatja I feel like I‘m stacking everytime you post a review of a Persephone book. Either you just write really great reviews, or the books are just that good. I really need to find out for myself! 😅 5y
Cathythoughts Gorgeous picture 5y
emilyhaldi @Kalalalatja I‘m definitely giving credit to Persephone and not my reviews 😆 every book they‘ve published is amazing!! 5y

#LostinFrance

First sentence: “It was on Christmas Day, 1943, that Hilary Wainwright learnt that his little son was lost.”

Wainwright, a poet and intellectual, sets out on a journey through post-WWII France to search for a child lost five years before. I haven‘t read this recent addition to my #PersephoneBooks collection yet but it is blurbed as “page-turning”, “gripping”, “powerful”, and “emotional”. That‘s good enough for me!

#WanderingJune

catebutler I have this one to read too. Even though it‘s been lingering on my shelf for far too long!! 6y
BarbaraBB This sounds 💔 6y
LeahBergen @catebutler My Persephone unread stack is shameful. 😆 6y

LeahBergen @BarbaraBB It does, doesn‘t it? And yet reviewers and blurbs say it it is compulsively readable. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 6y
erzascarletbookgasm Shameful but beautiful stack 😁 Love these Persephone and NYRB covers! 6y
BarbaraBB @LeahBergen that settles it then. Stacked. Sigh😂 6y
Suet624 Sounds great! 6y
Reviewsbylola I may possibly own this. #persephoneproblems 😆 6y
LeahBergen @Reviewsbylola I‘m going to have to adopt that hashtag 😆 6y
elkeOriginal So do you mix in the illustrated covers in your collection? I am so torn between these & the traditional grey when there is a choice! 6y
LeahBergen @elkeo_TheBookDragon My first Persephone Book was one of these Classics with the illustrated covers (Miss Pettigrew Lives For a Day) and was found in a local indie bookshop. I fell in love with them (obvs! 😆) and started ordering the dove grey editions. I guess they decided to rerelease the most popular books with these attractive covers to bookstores to draw in new readers. It certainly worked! So many people on blogs and reviews 👇🏻 6y
LeahBergen say that Miss Pettigrew was their introduction to the company. I bought a few more of the illustrated covers at the same bookshop and then found a couple more at sales .... and well, now I like both of them. 😆😆 6y
elkeOriginal @LeahBergen I feel better about my few illustrated covers now 💕 and while Miss Pettigrew was not my first purchase, it was my first read. She is the perfect gateway drug to the world of Persephones 😁 6y
LeahBergen @elkeo_TheBookDragon She certainly is! My first Persephone read was Miss Buncle‘s Book (another good gateway drug 😆). 6y

LondElle89 Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day by Winifred Watson is a wonderful Persephone book. It's cozy, charming, and simple. 7y
Aimeesue The Todd (Miss Ranskill) is my favorite so far. Dorothy Whipple is also very good - Persephone has republished several of hers. (edited) 7y
Aimeesue Saplings by Noël Streatfeild is excellent, though sad. Diana Tutton's Guard your Daughters is also a favorite of mine. Good stuff. 7y
peacegypsy @Aimeesue Thank you for the recommendations! I sort of wish I hadn‘t stumbled upon this magical book company. After hearing about so many engaging books, I‘m afraid my debit card is going to take s hit—or maybe a beating! 😳😊😂#Persephonebooks (edited) 7y
