I‘m short on words today, but this little book, chronicling a perfectly unexpected day for a downtrodden spinster, was a delight. My edition featured the original illustrations and they only added to its loveliness

✅My #doublespin for October @TheAromaofBooks

This 1938 book that was nearly lost to us (don‘t skip the preface) reads like the best, snappy, rom-com of the era. When a mistake transports a dowdy governess into a world of glamour, witty repartee, makeovers, society, nightclubs, charming friends, romance, a bad guy and more, she discovers what it means to live. As with most older literature there are a few racist and sexist bits. I enjoyed the story while being glad for progress.

This is a fun fast paced window into society in the late 1930‘s, in which an out of work governess stumbles in to the life of a more privileged young actress and joins her in a day filled with visits from friends and parties.

I enjoyed this much more than I expected to. I loved proper Miss Pettigrew starting to admit to herself that maybe enjoying life has more merits than her elders would have led her to believe.

squirrelbrain I really loved this one too! 7mo

It's not at all difficult to understand why this #persephonepick is such a popular one. What a charming, effervescent tale of a dowdy governess accidentally falling in with a Bohemian crowd and having the most extraordinary, life-changing of days.

LeahBergen Isn‘t it glorious?? 😊 11mo

This story was wonderfully charming! I would recommend it wholeheartedly, but the casual permissiveness of domestic violence, the racism against Jewish people, and the assertion that one character "isn't fit to be in the presence of a white woman" keeps me from going all-in. I know it was written 80+ years ago but ?. However, I did love the relationship between the two female leads and the sweet happy ending, and I give it a tentative thumbs-up.

The next two books on the #bookspinbonanza list are up next. Already made a start on Common Ground (at last @RachelO !). It was annoying me at first due to it being very local to me and including quite a few errors / artistic licence but I‘m enjoying it now.

I‘ve also just got The Mirror and the Light back on audio so will try to finish that in the next few weeks, before the Mantel talk at the Hay Digital Festival.

Cinfhen That cover edition is stunning!!! And so glad you‘re audio is back 💕💕Hope you‘re feeling better😘looking forward to book discussion later today 3y

After The Enchanted April this is another delightful book in the #spinsterlit genre.

This one is about Miss Pettigrew, who works as a governess and has never been loved. One morning she is hired by the flamboyant Miss LeFosse and upon meeting her Miss Pettigrew feels this is gonna be the one day that she really lives. She decides to enjoy every minute. And she does. A funny and touching story.

This book is an utter delight! Enchanting characters, witty dialogues, and I can‘t help but root for Miss Pettigrew who is honest, has a good heart, and quick to think on her feet. And what an extraordinary day Miss P had! There‘s one instance of racists remark, but I understand it‘s a different era. Lovely line drawings by Mary Thomsom and insightful introduction of the author in this Persephone edition. 👍❤️

#Booked2020 #hatheadcoveringoncover

Catherine_Willoughby Most books pre 1970s have some kind of racist remark especially 19th century novels . We must remember the times they were written in when such language was common place even among those who were not racist . If we ban every book with such words we would have throw away so many amazing novels. We can't change or wipe away the past by destroying Literature (or other such items). We can only learn from it. 3y
BarbaraBB Such a great edition! I have a grey Persephone edition of this one and will bump it up my TBR thanks to your review! 3y
batsy Such a pretty edition! It's on my TBR; sounds delightful. 3y

BookishMe @Catherine_Willoughby Agree with you. I try not to be sensitive to such books written then. Recently I became interested in a series set in Victorian England but published less than 10 years ago. I was surprised to find myself offended at a degrading description of an Indian staple - dhal gravy. I know its meant to reflect characters' attitude but it was poor choice of word by writer. And I couldn't bring myself to continue with the book 3y
Catherine_Willoughby @BookishMe modern novels try to hard to reflect the times they are set in. Each generation have its own mannerisms that we can comprehend as they did. I see it in my kids . Things or words that were common place are insulting to them even though were jokey said among us as teens. My adult son rubs it in , this is from "your time" It was only 20 years ago ! 80s/90s fads seem to be fashionable again. I lived it. That was enough. 3y
BookishMe @Catherine_Willoughby I think it can be confusing times for the different generations now. But I am glad that growing awareness is eroding prior prejudices 3y
Cinfhen Beautiful cover art and fabulous review 💝 3y
alisiakae Out dated and racist/antisemitic/homophobic language definitely arises when reading a lot of older books. Agatha Christie is one that come to mind quickly. I still read them, but make an effort to mention the presence of offensive language in my reviews. 3y
Nevertoobusyforbooks I loved this movie and I had no idea that it was based off of a book. This is definitely going in my TBR pile. Thanks for the review! 3y

Third time reading and each time it‘s charming. Loads of hilarious dialogue and I adore the main character Marred by touches of racism against Hispanic and Jewish people, which is typical of books written in the ‘30s, and not much like the film except in the overall plotline.

More books for adults should be illustrated ( for this novel, by Mary Thomson). This was an enjoyable romp with lots of witty banter. Keep in mind though that this was written in 1938 so there‘s sexist views/vibes (ie a woman is nothing without a man) and the like. Miss Pettigrew is an “old dame” who isn‘t even yet 50 😏.

It‘s been a while since I‘ve last tackled a #1001Books, but I was overwhelmed at which one to get to next! So I did a random number generator — my plan was to keep trying until I got one I already had in my TBR (marked in red in the 1001books app).

A delightful Cinderella story set in the late 1930s where mousy down-on-her-luck Miss Pettigrew is mistakenly—and fortuitously—sent to the wrong address by an employment agency. The following 24-hour period is chock-full of adventures and various twisty plots with her new glamorous friends and their soap opera level romantic issues. She breaks out of her shell and finds she is quite spunky after all. #happyending #persephonebooks

EvieBee @DelightfullyDogeared Same here! For approximately 6 years it‘s been on the shelf. But I really enjoyed it! Just perfect for spring. Podcasts are making me pick up books from my shelves instead of buying all new releases! Considering Great Expectations next. Dare I? 5y
Vikkiha Yes. Great story. I think the only Dickens I‘ve read is some of his ghost stories, which still hold up. My planned classics is to read Jane Eyre and Jean Rhys‘ Wide Sargasso Sea one after the other - if I ever decide which order to do it in. (edited) 5y

“All these years and she had never had the wicked thrill of powdering her nose...And all because she lacked courage. All because she had never thought for herself. Powder, thundered her father the curate, the road to damnation. Lipstick, whispered mother, the first step on the downward path. Rouge, fulminated her father, the harlot‘s enticement. Eyebrow pencil, breathed her mother, no lady...!”

Adored this! 5⭐️

TheWordJar Oh totally! *Forgot* to add “as I slink away to the stalls!” 😂 5y
EvieBee @TheWordJar Haha! I don‘t care if it‘s unhygienic. 😆 5y
DivineDiana @TheWordJar @EvieBee It‘s the stalls for me! 😉 5y
minkyb Gymsuit. Just the word makes me cringe. 5y
EvieBee @minkyb No doubt! 😆 5y
Jess_Read_This 😂 I am fine with undergarments being worn while changing but completely shut my eyes and lowered my head when three ladies walked sans everything to the showers in the gym locker room! I think I blushed for all three of them. 5y
EvieBee @Jess_Read_This Haha! The confidence some people have! 5y

Dear, Miss Pettigrew. That‘s not a packet of Beecham‘s Powder for rheumatism. It‘s cocaine! ☠️

Good morning! It‘s a French Toast and new book kind of morning. I wasn‘t a big fan of the film so haven‘t been in a hurry to read the book. However, after catching the Persephone episode of the Tea and Tattle podcast, decided to pull it off my shelf.

#CurrentlyReading #Persephone #bookandbreakfast #readingmyshelves #teaandtattle

Mdargusch I agree with you. I wasn‘t a big fan of the movie, so I‘ve never read the book. I will be watching for your review. 5y
Wilkie It‘s a sweet book. I hope you like it! 5y
Reviewsbylola I think I‘ll have to listen to that podcast!! 5y

Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks Such a pretty meal!!! 🥚 5y
catebutler I actually enjoyed the book and the movie, did think the book was slightly better than the movie. I hope you enjoy! 5y
minkyb What is this podcast you are referring to? Please and thank you. 5y
EvieBee @Mdargusch I thought I was the only one who thought it was meh! I‘ll definitely keep you posted. 🤓 5y
EvieBee @Wilkie I am really enjoying it thus far! 5y
EvieBee @Reviewsbylola @minkyb It‘s really good (Tea and Tattle)! @Jess_Read_This introduced me to it and it‘s been the highlight of my week. They discuss books, have author interviews and all kinds of good stuff! I went to look for the Persephone books episode in particular. 5y
EvieBee @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks Thank you! 🤗♥️ 5y
EvieBee @catebutler I‘m thinking as I read it now (and am definitely enjoying) that I might have to go back and watch it. It‘s been years!! 5y
catebutler @EvieBee I think you should! I actually think I did the same and found I liked the movie even more after the fact. Let me know if your opinion of the movie changes after you read the book! 5y
Jess_Read_This @EvieBee It‘s the highlight of my week too! I was rather bummed Miranda wasn‘t feeling well and this week‘s was delayed. I like their Friday one but wish it was longer than 10 minutes... which I know that‘s the design but their discussions are so interesting I need more time! ☺️ 5y
minkyb @EvieBee I did find that but was not sure it was what you were referring to. Downloading or uploading now! 🤗 5y
EvieBee @Jess_Read_This I am so enjoying that Friday segment as well! Makes me want to read more poetry and short stories. 5y
EvieBee @minkyb Yay! Enjoy. ♥️ 5y

My lovely sisters pitched in to get me a birthday gift. Did you all know that Persephone offers a subscription service? I get six books--one per month--and I get to choose a title. I'm half tempted to just tell them what I own and ask them to surprise me. 😂 But I would love suggestions of any Persephones you have loved! #persephone

monkeygirlsmama No experience with them, but what an amazingly thoughtful gift. Happy selecting! P.S. If you have any family members you'd like to donate I'll tell you where they can sign up. Haha 5y

Mdargusch Harriet. Even though you've already read it. 😂 5y
Eyelit That. Is. Awesome!! 💜 #persephonebooks 5y
Eyelit Also, I think your idea of telling them what you already have and asking them to surprise you has a lot of merit. I've yet to encounter a Persephone I didn't like... 5y
Reviewsbylola I ended up compiling a list of about 20 titles that I was interested in and asked them to surprise me from that! @Eyelit 5y
Eyelit Very cool. Enjoy! (And happy birthday!) 5y
ValerieAndBooks Wonderful gift! I love your idea of having them surprise you from a list you've made. 5y

#AndItsAugust Day 24 - Comfort Reads

While it's less common to come across them, there are still "happy books" out in the world. When that's the kind of book I'm in the mood to read, here are some of the ones on my shelves toward which I gravitate.

Also pictured, my favorite warm-weather scented candle. The fragrance pairs perfectly with a comfy story.

Moonpa Ex Libris!! I really need to re-read this one! 5y
RealLifeReading Keep meaning to read The Nakano Thrift Shop. And now that I see it on your comfort reads list, even more so! 5y
BooksForYears @RealLifeReading Some reviews have mentioned that the English translation was difficult to connect to, but I thought it was easy to read and very engrossing. 5y

Though some suspension of disbelief is required, this book has lots of 30s glamour, snappy dialogue and a supremely likeable heroine.
