Lockwood & Co.: The Screaming Staircase
Lockwood & Co.: The Screaming Staircase | Jonathan Stroud
A sinister Problem has occurred in London: all nature of ghosts, haunts, spirits, and specters are appearing throughout the city, and they aren''t exactly friendly. Only young people have the psychic abilities required to seeand eradicatethese supernatural foes. Many different Psychic Detection Agencies have cropped up to handle the dangerous work, and they are in fierce competition for business. In The Screaming Staircase, the plucky and talented Lucy Carlyle teams up with Anthony Lockwood, the charismatic leader of Lockwood & Co, a small agency that runs independent of any adult supervision. After an assignment leads to both a grisly discovery and a disastrous end, Lucy, Anthony, and their sarcastic colleague, George, are forced to take part in the perilous investigation of Combe Carey Hall, one of the most haunted houses in England. Will Lockwood & Co. survive the Hall''s legendary Screaming Staircase and Red Room to see another day? Readers who enjoyed the action, suspense, and humor in Jonathan Stroud''s internationally best-selling Bartimaeus books will be delighted to find the same ingredients, combined with deliciously creepy scares, in his thrilling and chilling Lockwood & Co. series.

This is the series I enjoyed the most this year on audio. I‘ve listened to them all repeatedly. There‘s lots of creepy ghosts and fun character interactions- especially between Lucy and the “foul skull” in the jar! This is a middle grade series by Jonathan Stroud and I wish there were more.

This is a great spooky series, full of adventure and friendship. Ghosts roam the night and are a danger to the living. Only kids can see, hear, and sense the ghosts so they are the only ones who can take care of the problem. #ghost 👻#screamathonphotochallenge #screamathon

This cover changes when book 2 and book 1 paperback come out. I like the changes.

I‘ve had librarians debate if this is MG or YA series. BN stocks it in kids. I figure this is a 5th through 10th series. I have book one but haven‘t read it yet.

This was a really good book! It‘s been a long time since I‘ve listened to a ghost story. Likable characters facing evil in both spectral and corporeal form made for an engaging audiobook. I look forward to more Lockwood & Co adventures!

A find in a Goodwill that I almost didn‘t pick up due to having a pile I haven‘t read yet 🙃 but I‘m glad I did and not will have to check out my local library for the rest of the series. The only thing I had an issue with when it came to the book was figuring out when the story takes place. It hints at modern time but also doesn‘t give much that says the story is in ‘our‘ time (no hints of cell phones and such). Still a good and easy story.

Slajaunie I recently read this book and enjoyed it as well. 10mo

I didn't know much about the book going in. Basically there's a ghost problem and only the young can see and get rid of them. Those scenes in haunted houses are breathtaking and scary. Really, if you are even remotely interested in the topic, go read this book. It's the start of a series and my library has the rest, yay! The only sign it's YA was that I saw one story turn way in advance. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

My Boxing Day so far.

Being #GhostLocked for the umpteenth time today.

Was asked to show my Hogwarts/Harry Potter mug collection by a friend who thought she has more HP mugs (she doesn't, she only has four and I gave her one of them - 😎👿).

Showed off my hand knit Christmas socks to the friend who gave them to me last year, and I truly love wearing them.

Also, the Gingerbread House has a serious problem with its roof. 😂😂😂 Mountain Trolls?

This book was EXACTLY what I was looking for in a Halloween read! It was creepy with some really frightening moments (I‘ve had to flip lights on all over the house a couple times) but it was overall quite humorous and super interesting. The person reading is also quite good; I really like her voice. I‘ve just checked out the second one, and I‘ll be finishing the series now, thanks!

Happy #YAWednesday! In this hilarious series, Lucy Carlyle & friends hunt ghosts that are plaguing an alternate London, armed with swords, magnesium flares, and, of course, liberal doses of sarcasm (the best weapon against ghosts, naturally). Highly recommend if you're looking for a read that's as entertaining and witty as it is adventurous & creepy! @TheFunkyBookworm

Loved every minute of this! When I open a YA or middle grade book that‘s supposed to be kind of scary I never expect it to actually be scary. Not, at least, to me as an adult. That said, The Screaming Staircase surprised me. It was such scary good fun that it made me jump a little at the small noises I heard while lying in bed reading (on my iPad) in the dark. On top of the fantastic story the characters were just plain awesome. 😁💜👻

Had to put Ghost into this jumpsuit/dungarees/body thing because she was licking her stitches. She doesn't like it. It doesn't hinder her in any way, but all of a sudden she can't move properly.

Well, I wanted to go grocery shopping, but it seems I'm 'Ghost-locked'. Which is fitting, given my current read.

Cathythoughts Poor ghost 🤒. Feel better soon 😽 2y
julesG @SandyW The stitches come out on the 12th of February. I was so angry, when I learned they put in stitches that have to be removed. Why, oh why? It's the year 2018, resorbable stitches have been used for ages. I'll keep her in the suit until Monday that's day 5 post-surgery. 2y
SandyW I'm not sure how that works, but hubby just had 2 cysts reminded from his eyelid today, and we go back in a week to have his stitches removed. Also I had 2 surgeries 3 years ago... One had internal disolvable stitches, the other surgery had both internal and external stitches. The external and had to be removed, which based on my limited experience, seems to be the norm. (I'm not a doctor, but I play one on the internet 😀) 2y
julesG @SandyW I've had cats spayed in the mid-90s and that was all done with dissolvable stitches. The vet said, rather pay a bit more for that, than having to stress the cat again with another trip to the vet. I've only had oral surgery where the stitches had to be removed, all other surgeries, internal and external, were with dissolvable stitches. I'm not a doctor either, just assumed if it was possible in the 90s, why not now. 2y
SandyW Hmmm. If it's a cost thing, they should offer you a choice 2y
SandyW ... I'd certainly rather pay more and NOT have to go back to the vet. Perhaps it's his/her way of getting to check up on the kitties later. 2y
MinDea Oh Ghost, feel better! Leave your stitches alone! When Shadow had surgery he had to wear a cone cause he wouldn't leave his stitches alone. Even with the cone he was able to get to the stitches and pulled them out! He dragged his head like it was the heavieat thing in all the land 😆😆 It was so adorable and also so sad! 2y
julesG @SandyW but I have to pay for that extra visit to get the stitches out, so financially it's the same. 2y
julesG @MinDea Ghost has a cone, which is too big for my tiny cat and gives her some sort of issue that ends in her vomitting. The suit makes her shiver, probably from the feeling of being touched everywhere at once. The vet (superhero vet-on-wheels) said that's normal and much better than the vomitting. 2y
MinDea Hopefully he heals quickly and back to living her "normal" life; suit free! 2y
Laughterhp Oh no! Hope the kitty gets better soon! We had to put a shirt on my dog so he wouldn‘t scratch and lick, but he loved it! 2y
julesG @Laughterhp Cats have this thing where every hair follicle is pretty perceptive and hence they can get over stimulated by petting. So putting clothes on cats is a tricky thing. I don't like doing it, but it's still better than an infection of the wound. 2y
Laughterhp Oh I didn‘t know that about cats. That‘s interesting and actually makes a lot of sense when I think about cats! 2y

When fighting (CHILDHOOD SCARY THING), make sure to pack lots of (TYPE OF METAL), (COMMON KITCHEN SEASONING), and (MAGNETIC OBJECT). Oh, and don't poke the ghost. It'll kill you. This horror/ mystery novel also sidesteps the YA genre's failings.

The heroine is competent from the start and KNOWS IT, there is no stupid romantic subplot, the mystery isn't blindly obvious from page 3, the ghosts are scary, and the world is effectively developed.

I had so many things to do today...but then this book from @ReadingsByTheC happened and my to do list suddenly shrank to "turn all the pages until there are no pages left to turn." Go figure. I loved this (surprisingly creepy!) YA fantasy set in a world where only kids can see-- & fight-- the dangerous apparitions haunting England. I'll definitely be looking into the rest of the series! Good escapist fun, and definitely not my usual read. ❤️

Ghost roam the nights in various forms and are a threat to the living. If you are touched by a ghost, you may not survive. Only kids can see, hear, or sense the ghosts. Since The Problem began, agencies run by adults, but using kids, have popped up to provide services to handle any Visitors. Lockwood & Co. cuts out the adult supervisors and consists of Anthony Lockwood, his partner George, and Lucy. ⬇️ Review continued in comments.

Bookzombie I did not expect to love this as much as I did, but it was so fun. The story is spooky and a little gory. The characters are witty and smart. Lucy is a strong female character.
