For nearly 2000 years, nobody was reading a poewrful Emperor's painstakingly carved edicts about seeing the error of his violent expansionist ways, converting to BUddhism and wanting to rule through peaceful means. In the mid 19th Century,a bunch of soldiers, chemists, lawyers, administrators, out of sheer curiosity, spent years deciphering them, and his voice was heard again, and still it.THis is that story.

Informative. Mostly focuses on India and China (and colonialism) but also covers a lot of time and a few other places.

A well researched book on the opium plant and its impact on all aspects of society during the eighteen and nineteenth century. It was this plant that provided a lion share of the capital needed for European colonization. A lot of the wealthiest Americans made their fortune from this trade before they diversified into other ventures.

When lacking an audio book option, does anyone else read aloud to themselves? For some reason I do in my Americanized British accent lol.

History book club book for November. So of course I‘m starting early. And yes I know hindsight is 20/20… but have you ever read a history book and just spent 70% of the time shouting WHY?!?! and the remaining 30% googling the words used?

Because historically, people in power were big dumb.

Starting my choice for this month's #BookedinTime
I am already fully engrossed in this dense, tragic history of Indian Independence at the close of the Second World War.

#BookedInTime

Shout out to @Itchyfeetreader for prompt.

I have not read any of the books pictured except Midnight at Malabar House, which I liked. The night diary is Middle Grade. I did order A Suitable Boy as I‘ve always wanted to read it.

rwmg @Cuilin @Dabbe I'm currently reading “The Home and the World“ by Rabindranath Tagore. It is set in the 1910s. Bimila is encouraged by her husband to acquire an education, and she gets involved in the fledgling Indian independence movement. Would this count? 9mo
Cuilin @rwmg absolutely it counts!! How is it? 9mo
dabbe @rwmg On the spreadsheet! 🤩 9mo
rwmg I'm about 1/3 of the way through. I'm finding it a bit heavy-going but I want to know how the characters end up. 9mo

Almost finished the tagged for another #14books14weeks @TheHeartlandBookFairy
Starting Atalanta now

What are you reading?

RamsFan1963 I've read The Anarchy. It was interesting but a dense read 2y
AllDebooks @RamsFan1963 it really is quite stressful reading. I was vaguely aware of the diabolical actions of the EIC, but to read it in more detail is devestating. Dalrymple has worked a masterpuece if history that desperately needs to be known. Have you read any of the others in his Quartet series? 2y

I am posting one book per day from my extensive to-be-read collection. No description and providing no reason for wanting to read it, I just do. Some will be old, some will be new. Don‘t judge me - I have a lot of books. Join in if you want!
