#Two4Tuesday @TheSpineView

1. Pineapple, even though it makes my mouth feel weird.
2. The whole Dr. Siri Paiboun series, because Dr. Siri marries a woman who owns a noodle shop in Laos and they often eat noodles together.

Thanks for the tag, @Sace

TheSpineView 💚🍍💚 Thanks for playing! 1mo
Sace Sounds like a good series! 1mo
AlaMich @Sace it is! It has a very unique setting, Laos right after the Vietnam War. 1mo

Slash and Burn is the 8th book in the Dr Siri Paiboun series, and I just love these books. This one had the main characters all together on an away mission, working with a group of Americans, which was a fun change of pace. The humor is right up my alley, the mystical element adds a certain eerie flair, and I always enjoy the 1970s Laos setting. Highly recommend!

I'm enjoying very much this mystery series set in Laos, with its excellent characters and touches of mysticism. In this installment, Dr. Siri Paiboun finds himself sent to a remote location in the mountains to investigate a mysterious death.

Mehso-so

So-so with the caveat that part of my issue was with the reader, and I probably would have liked this more in print.

This book features Dr. Siri, a coroner in 1970‘s Laos. The mystery wasn‘t very engaging to me, but I loved the details of Communist Laos in 1977. If I can find a print version of another book in this series I‘ll likely give it a try.

CSeydel I really enjoy this series! I definitely recommend starting with book 1 because you get more introduction to the characters and Dr Siri‘s spiritual abilities. 1y
Bookwormjillk @CSeydel thanks! Not sure how I ran across the 5th in the series, but I definitely want to find the first in print. 1y
CSeydel The mysteries are definitely secondary to the character development and the social/political/cultural exploration, but that was particularly pronounced in ‘pogo stick,‘ I felt. I‘ve only read the first 5 so far. 1y
Bookwormjillk @CSeydel That reminds me of Louise Penny's books which are some of my favorites. Thanks! 1y

I really enjoyed this second book in the Dr. Siri Paiboun series. The characters are great, the plot is fast-moving and I'm learning about Laotian culture (albeit that of the 1970's when this story is set).

TiredLibrarian I love this series! 1y
kwmg40 @TiredLibrarian I've only read the first two but I definitely plan to pick up the next one in the series! 1y

3.25/5 ⭐️ simple picture book from a child's perspective in a Thai refugee camp. I appreciated the author's note at the end about her family.

Reverence for elders, sadly still extraordinary for me to see in modern Western cultural narratives.
Based on author's childhood experiences as Hmong refugee (also has a memoir for adults I now want to read).
Poetic journey to self acceptance.
Cannot overstate how gorgeous the art is.

I loved the very idea of a murder mystery set in Laos. Funny and mysterious in equal measure.

Light, quirky and sprinkled with facts about Vietnam, Laos and Thailand where the author lives. Just what I needed right now.
