I picked this up ages ago because I liked Lynne Reid Banks when I was a kid. It was my March #BookSpin and a #MiddleGradeMarchThroughTime book and I‘m finally reviewing it now🤦🏻‍♀️ The story follows a Canadian girl whose family moves to Israel just months before the Six-Day War in 1967. It was interesting to see her growth as she adjusts to life on a kibbutz, explores her Jewish/Israeli identity, and questions the implications of the conflict.

I read 5 books for #MiddleGradeMarchThroughTime, and really enjoyed the journey! I met da Vinci‘s assistant Salai in early 1500s Milan, I watched as Dutch children in the early 1900s worked to attract storks to their village, and I traveled with Rifka Nebrot as her family fled the Russian pogroms in 1919. I spent time on a kibbutz in Israel during the 1967 Six Days War, and saw the Challenger explosion through the eyes of middle-schoolers in 1986.

I only had 2 books to read for my #BookSpinBingo card in March. They‘ll both be carryover titles for April.
I also read 18 books for #MiddleGradeMarchThroughTime. I enjoyed them and was happy to clear so many books off my owned TBR list.

I wanted more historical content from my middle grade reads this month but my library hold on StuntBoy came in early and my bookspin pick wasn‘t a historical one. Oh well, at least I got a few mg reads in. I‘m still reading Blue Birds and I‘m liking it above the others so that and StuntBoy are my favorites. Thanks for hosting @megnews @sblbooks

The last week of #MiddleGradeMarchThroughTime was a good one. I read 4 middle grade books, they were all four stars. The #KindredSpiritsBuddyRead The Blue Castle was excellent, except for one part toward the end. I knocked off a Star, so four stars for that one also. @megnews @BarbaraJean #BookReport @Cinfhen

TWO #BookSpin bingos in March, AND I completed both my BookSpin and #DoubleSpin picks! 🎉 It helped that it was #MiddleGradeMarch and my board was filled with quicker reads. 😁

Some great reads this month, but my favorite was re-reading The Blue Castle. Address Unknown was fascinating & thought-provoking, Wintering was lovely and timely, and I also really enjoyed my #MiddleGradeMarchThroughTime books (I‘ll have to post on those separately!)

I had so much fun reading middle grade this month, and I‘ve had great luck convincing students to read these books as I‘ve finished them! I read 10 books today, ranging from 1483 to 2001. My favorite was definitely Red, White and Whole, followed closely by Show Me a Sign. Least favorite was probably All the Greys on Greene Street…

I so enjoyed #MiddleGradeMarchThroughTime! I read these 12 books from 1587 to 2005. My favorite by far was A Place to Hang the Moon.

What did you read for #MiddleGradeMarchThroughTime? What was your favorite?

I enjoyed some parts of the book, but in the end, a so-so read.

What works for me: rich cultural diversity; family support; reading and drawing helps to overcome loneliness; hopeful.

What doesn‘t work for me: whiny main character; stiff dialogues; writing feels clunky and childish.
