I figured today was a good day to read this. It‘s a fresh reminder of the horrors of that day and I can‘t believe it‘s been 23 years, it seems like it was just yesterday. This is a middle grade book and a good way to introduce kids to this subject, but it‘s a fast read for adults and I would recommend it to any age. 5⭐️ #ISurvived #911 #neverforget #historicalfiction

140,000 Chinese men formed the French & British Chinese Labor Corps during WWI. The British headquarters were in Noyelles-Sur-Mer, France because it was by a railroad line as well as near a forest, which was an important source of timber. During & after the war, these men repaired railway lines, tanks, cleaned up battlefields, dead bodies, and the rubble from devastated towns. #NeverForget #LitsyBookClub

The first 45% of this book was read a few chapters a day but yesterday I couldn‘t put it down. Whether it‘s due to the power of the book or a change in my slumpy status remains to be seen. But the book is powerful. It fleshed out some of France‘s history for me and gave me more understanding of what it means to be Jewish not just the history of the holocaust. On page 462 it talks about how “1925 and 1950 weren‘t so very far apart” and how ⬇️

Deblovestoread ⬆️ “1950 and 1985 weren‘t so very far apart”. Today feels not that very far apart from the beginning of that history. It is unfathomable to me. #Neverforget 9mo
squirrelbrain That part about the years not being so far apart was really powerful. 9mo

This was on my TBR list for years, and I finally read it this week. I have mixed feelings about it, but the fact that it‘s based on a true story is absolutely remarkable. As a high school German teacher, I used to have an annual Holocaust reading project, during which students chose a book (fiction or nonfiction books in English) based on events of the Holocaust. At the end of the project we had book club style discussions in small groups…

KAO This title was added to the list of recommended books for that project, mostly because a few students discovered it and found it very moving. #neverforget (edited) 10mo

There‘s more I want to share but firstly EVERY person that has reached out to me, to see how I am, to offer support for the pain that was inflicted, to say I pray for your safety and for ALL that are affected- THANK YOU wholeheartedly. Your compassion doesn‘t mean you stand for one side or another side- you are showing up for humanity. And sadly, to those who I thought were my friends, your silence is deafening.

Magpiegem Sending love and strength at this absolutely heartbreaking time ❤️ 1y

Anna40 Sending love. How are your friends and family in Israel? How are you holding up? 1y
Cinfhen Thank you all for taking the time to read my post and offer your words of comfort @Anna40 @CarolynM @youneverarrived @Cupcake12 @julesG @jenniferw88 @Magpiegem As the days pass, and we begin to hear directly from the survivors and their families it‘s really hard to process the world we live in. In 2 days I‘ve attended 2 funerals - for young men, 26 &21. Seeing their friends & families completely gutted, listening to their wails - it‘s a lot. 1y
Anna40 I‘m so very sorry. My heartfelt condolences. 💕 1y
Anna40 Please know even if this means nothing now that Israel and the Jewish people are not alone. In the German Bundestag yesterday every politician, even the right wing AFD, condemned the attack for what it is and demanded to freeze any payments to Palestinians which unfortunately go not as they say to schools and hospitals but weapons. Someone left flowers at our local synagogue and the solidarity with Israel event yesterday was packed. 1y
rockpools Sending so much love to you and yours, Cindy. Thank you for keeping checking in, even with everything. Hugs. 1y
Cinfhen @Anna40 yes, it does help knowing how much the world is supporting and waking up to the realities- and we are feeling less isolated. It‘s sad that it took an event of such horrific proportions but moving forward we need to remember and do better for our future generations. As always, thank you for reaching out♥️ 1y
Cinfhen Rachel, I‘m trying so hard to not come across as preaching or being judgmental - I‘m honestly just wanting to share my experiences, as a Jewish wife, mother, daughter, sister, aunt and friend currently living in Israel. @rockpools 1y
Jess Cindy, your post is spot on. The politics are difficult, sure. But I stand for and have compassion for anyone going through this unspeakable tragedy. My heart breaks with every new account that is reported. I‘m so sorry that you have attended two funerals this week. Many hugs. 1y
Librarybelle Thank you so much for sharing this. I fully admit my knowledge is very thin when it comes to the history of Israel, Palestine, and Gaza. Do you have any books that you recommend to learn a bit more? For me, knowledge is power, and I would really like to learn more. I continue to think of you, your family, and your friends. ❤️ 1y
Bookwormjillk Cindy thanks for the update. I listened to a good podcast yesterday that basically said it‘s not a political stance to be against terror/weaponized rape/war crimes. It‘s astounding that these things are still happening in this world. My thoughts are with you. I appreciate your updates, and I am so sorry for everything that has happened. 1y
rockpools @Cinfhen I get that, and that is what‘s coming across. It‘s heartbreaking, horrific and so much more. 1y
JessClark78 I‘m so sorry for your losses. 💔💔❤️ 1y
Anna40 I didn‘t know you‘re in Israel. Stay safe 1y
Megabooks Cindy, I think about and pray for you (and all Israelis) each day!! It is incredibly hard watching so many suffer over there! How are your children? I hate that you have to worry about them as well. God be with you every hour of every day. Any more news from Z‘s old unit? The Psalm you posted on Insta was also the one my mom used for strength when she was battling polio as a kid. May it provide that much strength for you, too. All my love!! 💙🇮🇱 1y
JenReadsAlot I cannot even imagine the reality of it... the news I have watched is just devastating. Continuing to keep you in my thoughts. 1y
PathfinderNicole Keeping you in my thoughts and prayers 💙 1y
MallenNC The first thing I do when I log on here is check your feed. This is all so awful but I hope you keep sharing what you feel comfortable in telling us, if that continues to be something that helps you process. Sending love to you. I am glad you feel supported here on Litsy 1y
CoffeeAndABook I continue to pray, read as much as I can stomach and talk to people about what‘s happening. I sometimes have to make myself stop agonizing over the fates of the abducted, it‘s just too horrific, it makes me physically ill. I stand with you every bit of the way!! My mom is also sending me palms to help find words of anguished prayer 😔💔✡️ 1y
IndoorDame I‘m glad to see that you‘re safe. You‘re in my thoughts in all this 💙 1y
JamieArc 💙🤍💙 1y
jlhammar You've been in my thoughts, Cindy, and I so appreciate all you've been sharing. 1y
Simona I‘m so sorry for everything you have been through this week … and yes, silence is painful, and a kind word is not a political stance. 1y
sarahbarnes 💔💔💔 1y
Cinfhen @Simona I honestly thought about you today - I thought about Bosnia and Herzegovina and how ignorant I was to the long-held siege. I pray the situation here does not escalate like the terrible Bosnian War. Wars and conflicts never help the innocent people. Thank you friend for keeping me in your thoughts 🩷 (edited) 1y
CoffeeAndABook Cindy, still thinking and praying for you, for everyone who‘s lost a loved one, is fearing for a loved one, is in captivity. I‘m still devastated. Thinking of the hostages and what they‘re going through at this very moment is making me physically ill. I wish I could do more than send you my thoughts. My mom has also been sending me psalms to put words to anguished prayers 😔💔✡️ 1y
Ruthiella The situation is heartbreaking. 💔 I am so sorry for you and everyone affected by this awful event. The world feels like it is on fire sometimes with all the hate and violence. 1y
Cinfhen I‘m truly touched by this outpouring of concern 💜 it‘s really difficult to describe what it feels like to be so near to the violence but far enough away to have a (false) sense of security. We can hear fighter jets, we can feel vibrations from the incoming missiles either being intercepted by the Iron Dome or unfortunately the boom when it lands. Supermarkets are empty, we are being told to prepare bottled water and canned food. 👇🏼 1y
Cinfhen My parents grew up in America, so they don‘t know what it‘s like to live through a war being fought on home-ground. My youngest son, is nearly 22 - he shouldn‘t have to be attending funerals of his friends, worrying about what his world will look in 3 months/ 6 months. Since Saturday his already lost 7 friends, one friend is missing ( either assumed dead or taken hostage) and several friends are wounded, including one who lost an arm. 👇🏼 1y
Bklover Cindy, watching the news this morning I was thinking about your son. Still having access to everything happening with his old unit must be excruciating for him. Still here thinking and praying for you all 💔 1y
Bklover Oh, I didn‘t see your post about him above! I‘m so so sorry. 💔 1y
Cinfhen He‘s only 21. The youth of our country pay a heavy price. Military service is mandatory for boys and girls post high school. So when people say well it was a solider not a civilian who was killed or taken hostage , yes, technically it‘s true but the soldiers are our sons and daughters - they run to danger as an obligation to defend their country and its people. Heroic boys & girls @Jess @Librarybelle @Bookwormjillk @JessClark78 @JenReadsAlot 👆🏽 1y
Cinfhen @PathfinderNicole @MallenNC @CoffeeAndABook @IndoorDame @JamieArc @sarahbarnes @Ruthiella @Bklover 👆🏽👆🏽👆🏽 see all my comments above xx I think I‘m emotionally drained and Litsy truly has become a safe space for me🫶🏼🫶🏼🫶🏼🫶🏼🫶🏼 (edited) 1y

DGRachel You are right. The silence is deafening and I would like to apologize for my delayed response. I‘m glad you are currently safe and I hope that you continue to be so. 1y
Cinfhen PLEASE @DGRachel don‘t apologize at all! I wasn‘t trying to make anyone uncomfortable- I think people feel like im not going to bother them, or what good will my heart emoji do ? but the truth is EVERY act of kindness feels SO HUGE right now - and knowing that an entire community stands with you , gives you strength like no other @TheBookgeekFrau @MaureenMc @mrp27 1y
Cinfhen @Librarybelle I have a book that really helped educate me, but it‘s definitely told from the Israel perspective so I can‘t promise it‘s not a little more sympathetic to the Israeli “side” - but in terms of breaking down history and giving the facts it‘s very clear and accessible. The author is also on IG sharing AMAZING content Noa Tishby (edited) 1y
Librarybelle Thank you, Cindy! ❤️ 1y
Deblovestoread Thank you taking the time to post. I‘m still holding you, your loved ones and Israel close. It‘s such a small thing when what you are experiencing is so horrific. 1y

TheBookHippie I logged on to check in on you. Holding you all in my heart. 💙 1y
Simona That is my hope and pray too … It‘s so easy to be ignorant when the war is in the country for which majority of the people can‘t find it on the map, it‘s sad to see, when after few months, war becomes old news in the news cycle, when the gas price is more important than grieving mothers, raped girls and killed boys/men, it‘s so, so easy to forget that behind every brutal act - a human life remains damaged forever … 1y
Simona … and that's why it's important to stay vocal. ♥️🙏 1y
dabbe Thinking and praying about you and all who are affected. 🧡💜🧡 1y
Gissy Maybe it is hard for others to accept or believe what a person is capable to do, to harm others. But the reality, what we are seeing, is so hard, so terrible, so real😢, I can‘t imagine how you and others who have family there are feeling, there are no words😔💔We are here suffering with those images. This is a difficult time, stay with those who really are supporting you. Receive a big hug and strength in this difficult time💓 1y
LeahBergen Please keep posting and take good care of yourself, my friend. I‘m thinking of you all day and sending love. ❤️ 1y

Cinfhen I‘m feeling ya @LeahBergen xxx 1y
quietlycuriouskate Your son is younger than my daughter. I'd be going out of my mind with anxiety if she were in his shoes. I feel for you both. ❤️ 1y
dabbe @Cinfhen You spreading the word, voicing the truth as only you can tell it and being a primary source (term used in history classes) for all of us is so profoundly moving and why good must prevail over evil: “In spite of everything I still believe that people are really good at heart. I simply can‘t build up my hopes on a foundation consisting of confusion, misery, and death ... ⬇️ 1y
dabbe “I see the world gradually being turned into a wilderness, I hear the ever approaching thunder, which will destroy us too, I can feel the sufferings of millions and yet, if I look up into the heavens, I think that it will all come right, that this cruelty too will end, and that peace and tranquility will return again“ (A. Frank, as you well know). ❤️💔💔❤️‍🩹 1y
Oryx Sending love to you and your family ❤️❤️❤️ 1y
Cinfhen @dabbe it‘s hard to believe but it was only two weeks ago that I read a memoir written by Anne Frank‘s childhood friend. I was literally sobbing throughout this book, thinking about the depravity and lack of compassion these families had to endure & the ultimate & unimaginable suffering they endured. And now HERE WE ARE. Even with a modern State of Israel, Jews are being dragged out of their homes, tortured in the most horrific ways and 1y
Cinfhen Honestly @BookwormM I never notice likes but always enjoy and appreciate the more personal interactions. But im touched to know you‘ve been following my situation and holding me in your thoughts. 💙 it‘s true I also feel weird liking such sad or difficult posts - it seems callous in a way even though it‘s clearly not!!! (edited) 1y
Cinfhen @quietlycuriouskate I‘ve mentioned in other posts but you might have missed - luckily I‘ve been blessed as my son was medically discharged last July 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼At the time he was so distraught about having to leave his unit and end his service time. Now in hindsight it was a blessing in disguise 😇 but the bond of brotherhood amongst these boys is timeless and therefore he‘s remained on their group chats. So on Saturday, some boys 1y
Cinfhen from his unit were actually on guard duty for Kibbutz Be‘eri. Unfortunately they were completely ambushed and my son was literally learning in real time what was occurring. He kept reading us frantic messages he was seeing but we didn‘t really grasp that this was occurring in dozens of towns around the border. It was very traumatizing 💔 1y
Cinfhen @Oryx and it‘s felt and appreciated- thank you!!!!! 1y

Cinfhen PLEASE share @CSeydel I am SO sick and saddened over the hatred and garbage that is being fed to our college age kids. SO MUCH MISINFORMATION!!!! And LIES!!!!! It‘s truly terrifying what they believe 😭😭😭😭 1y

CSeydel Me too 😢 1y
dariazeoli Still thinking of you, Cindy, & hoping you stay safe. Social media is really difficult to disseminate this week and it‘s hard to get up to speed on something you‘re so uneducated on when there‘s so much noise out there. I‘ll strive to educate myself better while I hold compassion for everyone Hamas is victimizing for their hateful ideology and mission statement. Misinformation and lies are what keep this evil alive. It‘s up to is to keep it at bay 1y
CBee Cindy, I decided I needed to educate myself and am currently listening to this on audio: 1y
CBee It‘s really good so far, plenty of history but also interspersed with her family‘s history and a bit about her own life. I know she‘s been constantly updating on IG as well and I followed her there. Still sending you all so much love ❤️ @Cinfhen 1y
Cinfhen You are SO RIGHT @dariazeoli lies and misinformation are another enemy the world needs to fight. I get it. It‘s so hard to dismantle it all and it‘s hard not to think about the innocent people who live under Hamas rule, who have been indoctrinated with so much hate and lies. (edited) 1y
Cinfhen @CBee I found Noa‘s book REALLY helpful & insightful. And she‘s been outstanding on IG & other social media platforms providing context & content. THANK YOU for WANTING to know more and learn more. Education is a powerful weapon! 1y

I found this book languishing in a neighborhood #LittleFreeLibrary. Day after day, no one picked it out to read. It‘s a small book, one woman‘s memoirs of her time at #Auschwitz. Everyone‘s story deserves to be heard so I brought this book home. I‘m reading it now, concurrently with quite a few other books.

Cinfhen #NeverForget 💜I love that you brought this book home to read 3y
SqueakyChu @Cinfhen It sort of called out to me. The mother of the author died immediately after arriving at Auschwitz. I was shocked to learn her name was Teresa Katz (my middle name and my maiden surname). I was named after my maternal grandmother Teresa who also perished in Auschwitz. It‘s all very sad and eerie. (edited) 3y
SqueakyChu This book literally just gave me chills. I‘ve never had that happen to me before. It happened when I read about what happened to the author‘s brother after the war. 3y
