Friends Forever | Shannon Hale
post image
Pickpick

A great conclusion to this trilogy. We find Shannon navigating middle school friendship weirdness: how to be friends with boys, feeling jealous of friends, friends who don‘t like each other, and more. She‘s also still working through anxiety and OCD (undiagnosed, with a great endnote about it). I really understood Shannon‘s struggles, and I think a lot of people would. Recommend. #52Books23 #timeintitle

Mehso-so

Like most others I enjoyed the first part of this book. The collapse of the US, the people seeking refuge in other countries: it is an intriguing and disturbing premise. However in the second part strange things start happening to Ron, the narrator of the story. I didn‘t get if he is just unreliable or if his circumstances are. Too vague, too disconnected to my taste. #ToB23

squirrelbrain This is up next for me (on audio)…at least it‘s relatively short! 😁 2y
Ruthiella I‘ll keep my expectations low. I‘m not even sure if I‘ll be able to get it from any of my libraries. 🤫 2y
sarahbarnes Great review! I‘m not sure I‘m going to read this one… 2y
Megabooks Fantastic review! The whole seeing different faces on women was an odd angle for sure. 2y
BarbaraBB @squirrelbrain @Ruthiella @sarahbarnes Look at us, ToB fans, we‘re not even eager to read the books anymore! It‘s gonna be a weird tournament! At least we‘ll have a winner we‘ll root for! 2y
BarbaraBB @Megabooks Exactly that. I didn‘t understand that. Didn‘t he recognize faces, or did they really change, or did he just not recognize them?? 2y
Megabooks My thought is that it was to symbolically show his confusion and disorientation in his new surroundings, how he felt alienated from both the locals and other refugees, as well as a maternally embodied longing for his motherland. It‘s almost like he wanted to see America or his hometown in each woman‘s face but kept coming up short. Hopefully I‘m remembering correctly, but I‘m probably reading too much into it. 🤔🤷🏻‍♀️ (edited) 2y
BarbaraBB I think you‘re right about him wanting to see America is each woman‘s face, I thought of that too, but why? I felt I knew too little about his past to feel connected to this. 2y
Hooked_on_books @Megabooks @BarbaraBB I agree with you on that choice. It felt gimmicky to me, especially since he didn‘t seem to have a problem recognizing men‘s faces, just women. Which to me just devalues women. 2y
Megabooks @Hooked_on_books Barbara, I can see your point Holly. It is odd that it‘s just women, but I read it literally as he was looking for his motherland. I didn‘t feel particularly sympathetic towards him nor did I really under why he was running, B. The author hinted that he was in a conflict zone. I wonder if he was making it vague so we could see ourselves or refugees in our communities as the MC. 2y
Librarybelle I‘ll probably pass on this one 2y
BarbaraBB @Megabooks @Hooked_on_books That is an interesting thought Meg. If he wanted to write about refugees‘ feelings however, he didn‘t really succeed imo. He had to add this condition of not recognizing women and, like you stated: why was he running? Too much didn‘t make sense for me to connect to this possible meaning. 2y
kwmg40 I'm happy to read the comments here, as I too didn't understand fully all that was going on, and reading the interpretations is making me ponder these ideas further. I'm glad I read the book, even though it was frustrating and tiresome at times. 2y
BarbaraBB @kwmg40 I always feel that discussing the book makes me appreciate it more! 2y

ClairesReads Such a beautiful book 7y
TrishB Definitely tempted by this one! 7y
BarbaraBB I loved their conversations 💜 7y
Cinfhen @BarbaraBB I loved how carefree they were with Jamie~ so unlike parents today who hover and worry and micromanage. It was refreshing in a sense to see that type of “parenting” I‘m specifically thinking about Louis allowing Jamie to walk alone with Bonny at the camping sight. He was only 6!!! 7y
