This is a historical crime novel based on an actual event…and it‘s so well written and intriguing!
Life isn‘t easy for Greek grandma Zina. Especially now that she‘s been accused of a crime in London where she does not speak the language. Enter Eva into Zina‘s life. It‘s the 1950s and translating for the accused was an afterthought. That age-old mother in law vs daughter in law relationship
Another #blameitonlitsy book, @TheKidUpstairs

TheKidUpstairs Glad you liked it! It was a total #BlameitonLitsy read for me, too. I think it was @squirrelbrain 's review that got me 😁 2mo
squirrelbrain It was such a great book wasn‘t it @TheKidUpstairs ? Glad you liked it too, Chelsea. I have an ARC of her new one - due out on 8th May in the UK. I want to get to it soon, but I have so many other ARCs that I‘m trying to read in pub order. 2mo
TheKidUpstairs @squirrelbrain ooh, that one sounds good too! It releases digitally here in May, and is a cheap pre-order, might just have to do that! Have you read her debit? 2mo
TheKidUpstairs @squirrelbrain that should, of course, say debut 🤦‍♀️ 2mo
squirrelbrain I knew what you meant! 🤪 @TheKidUpstairs And no, I must have assumed Unspeakable Acts was her debut so didn‘t know there was another. I *may* have just ordered a copy from Amazon. (Well, when you‘ve got a Xmas voucher burning a hole in your pocket..🤷‍♀️). 2mo

This was really good!
In 1950s London, Cypriot grandmother Zina Pavlou is accused of brutally murdering her daughter-in-law. As she speaks no English, interpreter Eva Georgiou is brought in to translate.
The result is a gripping courtroom drama combined with a thoughtful character driven portrait of these two women. It also confronts zenophobic and class issues within the justice system in a nuanced way that never feels too heavy-handed.

LeahBergen Great review! I want to read this one. 6mo
squirrelbrain I loved this when I read it - I only found out about it when it was on the BBC Between the Covers programme and I don‘t think I‘d have read it otherwise. 6mo
TheKidUpstairs @squirrelbrain this is the second Between the Covers 2023 selection I've read (probably both due to your reviews 🤣). Loved both, so I think I'm going to have to start paying attention to their lists! When do the selections come out? 6mo
squirrelbrain They just came out this weekend! This year‘s are: All The Colours of the Dark, Glorious Exploits, There Are Rivers in the Sky, Butter, Whale Fall and The Kellerby Code. I read Colours this last weekend, and I‘ve read the last 3 too. I own Rivers plus I‘ll listen to Glorious Exploits on Audible. 5mo

Mehso-so

The format of this novel was very different from the other Gaskell works I've read and am used to. It isn't very stimulating to read. The book isn't plot or character-driven but is formatted as vaguely connected vignettes.

Doppoetry The book gently criticizes Victorian society and what I would call “cottage-core“ and the refusal of the upper-class ladies to “get with the times“ because change is scary and the stagnation of the little town is preferable to the older generation. 6mo

📚Currently reading:

🎧The Terror
🎧Cranford

Progress:
Last week has been a bit chaotic so I haven't finished The Terror like I initially planned, but hopefully this week it will be finished. Picked up Cranford and it has been delightful but a bit uneventful so far.
