Cuilin Lucy slipped up she said “he”. 🫢 oops 🤫😉 1y
See All 23 Comments
Clare-Dragonfly @Cuilin Is that what her mistake is?! I don‘t get it 😂 1y
mcctrish Even awfuler than before @TheBookHippie 🤦🏻‍♀️ 1y
TheBookHippie @mcctrish OY TO THE VEY.. 1y
Bookwormjillk Awful but entertaining 🤣 1y
Ruthiella @Cuilin @Clare-Dragonfly I wondered about that too. Is it the line “It makes such a difference when you see a person with beautiful things behind HIM unexpectedly.” So that we understand that SHE was overtaken in the moment just as he was? 1y
dabbe And all the exchanging of coins: a comedy of manners. Charlotte seems to be concerned about doing the right thing about reimbursing for the cab, but as with everything re: Charlotte, it's annoying to everyone, especially Lucy. 1y
Cuilin @Ruthiella @Clare-Dragonfly yes. She gave it away that she was overcome not “him”. That the beauty of it all got to her and she still thinks of it!!! 1y
ravenlee The endnote in the Penguin edition: “It perhaps is worth explaining the ‘unfortunate slip‘ in Lucy‘s speech. She clearly reverses the point of view, meaning to say, ‘It makes such a difference when you see a person with beautiful things behind her unexpectedly.‘ Lucy has made an early version of the Freudian Slip. @Clare-Dragonfly @Ruthiella @Cuilin 1y
ravenlee @dabbe I think the word “punctilious” applies here. Also, why wouldn‘t she have smaller coins? Wouldn‘t that be like traveling in the U.S. with hundred-dollar bills and quarters, but nothing in between? How hare-brained. 1y
Cuilin @ravenlee Exactly. Interesting that Charlotte doesn‘t pick up on this. I guess she‘s all in a dither about coins again. 1y
Clare-Dragonfly @Cuilin Ooh, I see! That makes sense, but is Charlotte observant enough to pick up on it? 1y
Clare-Dragonfly Speaking of Charlotte, I suspect she wanted to be seen as virtuous for offering to pay, but for her money to not actually be accepted because they wouldn‘t have change. 1y
BarkingMadRead @Clare-Dragonfly definitely! I don‘t think she actually expected them to take her money! 1y
BarkingMadRead I bet Charlotte picked up on it and is saving it for another day! 1y
dabbe @ravenlee I think she does it on purpose--just like her always saying things like “Oh, I'll sit on the hard ground, Lucy, you take the seat.“ She LOVES being not only the center of attention but creating angst; she feeds off of it. But then that would put her in an even darker category than just being a twit (that was the word in the book right?) 1y
dabbe @Clare-Dragonfly YES! A way to “pretend“ to be virtuous but not really intending to be. I'd hate to ever turn my back on Charlotte! 🤣 1y
Bklover @Clare-Dragonfly Yep! She is a manipulative sneak. @ravenlee I had no idea what she referring to 1y
julieclair @ravenlee Thanks for the explanation! I am listening on audio and was completely clueless what the “unfortunate slip” was, even after listening to it several times. 🤪 1y
eeclayton @Cuilin @ravenlee Thank you for clearing up what the slip was. I'm reading this in translation and this aspect is completely lost in my version 1y

eeclayton Good point about the Rosy girls! 😂 2y
Ruthiella IKR! You all just finished Middlemarch with an equally egotistical and vain Rosalie! 😂 A stereotypical mean girl (TM). 2y

Bookwormjillk Should we be calling people Rosie instead of Karen? (I don't call people Karen by the way. I have 4 Karens in my family and I feel terrible for them.)

It took me a loooong time to get through this chapter. Why do so many people kill birds and kick dogs and cats in this book?

This has been deep thoughts by Jill.
2y
BarkingMadRead @Bookwormjillk it‘s starting to look that way 🤣🤣 #dontbearosie 2y
mcctrish I was feeling badly for Agnes, would the mom even let her talk or explain herself?! But so happy she has the dog for companionship ( Matilda better let her keep it 😡) but stumbling upon the whole Mr Hatfield/Rosalie drama is just bonkers! He is an AWFUL man! If R thinks he‘s going to take a brush off well, saddle up!!! I almost felt sorry for R with her ramble about Sir Thomas Ashby and what all the mothers say and what he does and doesn‘t do. 2y
mcctrish But then R throws her purse at Agnes to get her out of the way so she can hang out with douchbag Hatfield 2y
dabbe I'm very worried about the terrier. That's mostly all I could think of during this chapter. Rosalie reminds me of Bathsheba Everdene in FAR FROM THE MADDING CROWD ... only Bathsheba was the main character and not a snobby-nosed sidekick like Rosalie. Heck, she's not even a sidekick! #sheneedstobekickedintheass 2y
BarkingMadRead @dabbe I legit gasped when he kicked the dog, I was so mad!! 2y
Clare-Dragonfly I am glad Agnes is taking care of the dog but I‘m getting pretty annoyed with her! How freaking far gone is she that Weston can snatch a book out of her hand and she‘s all “oh, he‘s being brotherly”? 🙄 And she won‘t report the actual conversation with him, but she does report every obnoxious word of Rosalie‘s conversation with Hatfield. Plus, I get a slut-shamey vibe from her disapproval. Not that Rosalie doesn‘t deserve all the disapproval. 2y
mcctrish I‘m reading this on the Serial Reader app and have just realized I missed half of the drama 🤣🤣🤦🏻‍♀️ oh dear, is Hatfield coming for Rosalie once the whole debacle gets out?! 2y

Chapter 24: there‘s trouble in paradise and his name is Arthur. #ihavenowords #heisapig #lethimgotolondon #betteroffathome #pemberlittens #chapteraday

Librarybelle Arthur makes me want to scream! Ugh…. 3y
BarkingMadRead @Librarybelle he makes me so mad, but she makes me mad, too! How does she not see him for what he is? 🤬🤬 3y

Librarybelle I know, right??? 3y
MoonWitch94 Arthur is THE WORST! 😵‍💫 But how can she NOT see who he truly is. It is mind boggling. 3y
Crinoline_Laphroaig @Librarybelle @BarkingMadRun @MoonWitch94 Arthur is the worst. 🤬 At least she is starting to question his actions. I'm liking this Bronte soooo much better than #WanderingThroughWutheringHeights. I've never read Tenant so curious to see where it goes. 3y
BarkingMadRead @Crinoline_Laphroaig this is my first time reading ad well, and I‘m liking the drama much better lol 3y
MoonWitch94 @Crinoline_Laphroaig This is my first time reading & I am absolutely enjoying it better. 3y
Crinoline_Laphroaig @BarkingMadRun @MoonWitch94 I just finished reading the new Natalie Jenner book and two of the characters call Anne “the neglected one of the pack.” Which is so true! Emily and Charlotte seem to me to be the ones most talked of. 3y
MoonWitch94 @Crinoline_Laphroaig Ohh that looks like a good one. Added it to my tbr. But that is absolutely true. She does seem to be. 3y
tpixie @Crinoline_Laphroaig thanks for book tag, and Anne is my favorite Brontë! 3y
Clare-Dragonfly He is so awful! I came across an article about Anne and Tenant that I was going to share but it‘s spoilery. So I‘ll wait until we‘re done! 3y
BarkingMadRead @Clare-Dragonfly I can‘t wait to see it! 3y
Bklover @Clare-Dragonfly Oh, I‘m looking forward to reading your article!! 3y
julieclair Great meme! So true! 😂 And yes, Arthur is so slimy. For some reason, I picture him as Rhett Butler in Gone with the Wind... 3y
julieclair @Crinoline_Laphroaig Bloomsbury Girls looks awesome! Have added it to my stack. Thanks for mentioning it, as I had never heard of it. 3y
BarkingMadRead @julieclair omg yes! Perfect comparison! 3y
Chili #Arthursucks good grief Helen! Wake-up!!!!! He‘s not going to get any better. 2y
