Bookwormjillk Wait! What????? Was it Laura or was it the lady in white? This book is such a soap opera! 1mo

mcctrish What. The. Hell. 1mo
Leftcoastzen Maybe one of those poisons that makes you seem dead but you are not ? I went through all the stages of grief. He would get the money but it probably be worth it to be rid of him . 1mo
BarkingMadRead @Leftcoastzen I wondered the same thing, I can‘t wait to see what happens next! 1mo
dabbe I recall #porkchop hinting to #percypig that he had a plan re: the likeness between Anne and Laura. This must be it. Anne's the one with the heart problem, so Anne's the one who died at #porkchop's place. Laura has to be the one alive and the one that Walter met in the cemetery with Marian. Now we need to fill in how she got there. @Bookwormjillk: #soapoperaindeed

I feel like I'm playing CLUE: Laura is in the library with the wrench .... 🤣

dabbe Just read this from good ol' Wikipedia; it definitely confirms the soap-operaness of this novel! 🤩
“Collins's works were classified at the time as sensation novels, a genre that became the precursor to detective and suspense fiction. He also wrote penetratingly on the plight of women and on the social and domestic issues of his time.“

BarkingMadRead @dabbe for real! Total telenovella, this is CLUE, the movie 🤣 1mo
Bookwormjillk @dabbe ohhhh good theory. And the flowers did something right? Pork Chop did it in the bedroom with the bouquet. 1mo
dabbe @BarkingMadRead Circa 1860s. 🤩🤣🤩 1mo
Clare-Dragonfly Twin switch! I knew it!!!! @dabbe That‘s exactly how I think it went! (edited) 1mo
Clare-Dragonfly I love the inclusion of “the narrative of the tombstone.” So dramatic! So fitting for the way the novel is told! So unexpected! 1mo
Bookwormjillk @Clare-Dragonfly yes the tombstone part was A+ 1mo
KAO I did not see that coming!! (But in retrospect probably should have!) 1mo
julieclair I've never thought of flowers as a murder weapon, lol. (Except maybe when consumed as poison.) 💐☠️ 1mo
BarkingMadRead @julieclair when I think of flowers I think of Carol on the walking dead #lookattheflowers 1mo

Ruthiella Yes, little Tom is a budding serial killer. 😱 2y
willaful I'm not looking forward to her having to deal with this little sociopath. 😫 I'm guessing she's going to grow up quick. 2y

BarkingMadRead @willaful seriously though! I think I‘ve been watching too many true crime shows lately or something, because I immediately went to serial killers with this one 😆😆 hopefully I‘m overreacting! 2y
willaful @BarkingMadRead I suppose the author wouldn't have made that particular connection and I guess it's *possible* he's just extremely spoiled and could improve but *shudder*. 2y
IndoorDame @BarkingMadRead I immediately went to serial killer too! Though that‘s not how I‘m actually predicting the plot plays out. Clearly modern media has warped all our brains 😂😅🤣 2y
Clare-Dragonfly Ohhhhh boy. I had a feeling when the mother started describing her children that no one else would see them the way she does, but I was not envisioning this spoiled little sociopath! And Agnes has not made a good start at all by indulging his talk and attending to him over Mary Ann 😬 2y
Clare-Dragonfly I don‘t expect him to become a serial killer like Jack the Ripper, but if the book goes long enough for him to become an adult, I absolutely see him killing people. Maybe he‘ll become a duelist! His dad and uncle probably kill people too, just in accepted ways. Killing animals is literally one of the childhood signs of a budding serial killer. It‘s not a stretch on our parts! 2y
Librarybelle I was horrified! Poor Agnes…and completely agree with @Clare-Dragonfly !! 2y
AnnR Agnes was ill prepared to deal with children like this. She let Tom get the upper hand on the first day. What a sad set of circumstances for Agnes. This isn't going to go well. 2y
dabbe Tom reminds me of John Read in Jane Eyre. Maybe he'll grow up to be an alcoholic abuser, too. And the mother is stone cold as well as the house. I sense foreboding times ahead. 2y
mcctrish Jeez Louise what a second chapter 2y
Bookwormjillk I‘m just catching up, and what the heck? 2y
SamAnne Just catching up…a bunch of sociopaths…. 2y
julieclair Oh my! As if just killing the birds wasn‘t enough, he has to torture them too? And the father and uncle just laugh and say he‘s all boy? And even the mother says it‘s okay because they‘re just sparrows and not songbirds? What kind of awful family is this? 2y
AllDebooks What a vile family! 2y
