The Lamar and Hayden Valley areas are known a the American Serengeti. The open plains, the wildlife, the understanding of America as an amazing landscape. If you have seen this, it can be hard to believe that we almost lost it in the late nineteenth century. George Bird Grinnell is one of the men we can thank for saving this precious resource. He recognized that without proper conservation, the American West would be plundered into devastation.

Good account of the Mormon Trail from out of Nauvoo in 1846 through the Handcart painfulness of 1857 and almost to the Railroad era. He does use some questionable sources but mostly it is well written and tries to be somewhat unbiased.

Bookwomble "Tries to be unbiased" seems a dubious accolade ? 5mo

I can‘t figure it out; why isn‘t Percival Everett a household name? This is the 4th I‘ve read. THIS title won the PEN USA 2006 award. His next up is getting TON of buzz… anyway, this was brutal and amazing.

BkClubCare FYI @BookNAround - I had this posted to the wrong book 😔 5mo
Megabooks He is awesome! 5mo
BookNAround The only one of his that I‘ve read (although I own several) is So Much Blue as it was a 2017 Great Group Reads pick for the Women‘s National Book Association. It was definitely a good book. (edited) 5mo

Starting one of Stegner‘s histories I have never read. I mostly like his writing.

Next up! Did I choose a book by a favorite author that was few pages? Yes, yes I did. Did I choose a pie recipe based on what fruit was on sale at the grocery store? Yes, once again, YES. #CaresPieShow #iLovePie

I‘m posting one book a day from my massive collection. No description, no reason for why I want to read it (some I‘ve had so long I don‘t even remember why!). Feel free to join in!

He loves Westerns, and Tombstone is his fav. We leave in 2 weeks for Vegas, Zion, the Grand Canyon, Phoenix, and of course a stop in Tombstone. Thanks for hosting @TheHeartlandBookFairy !

New #bookball episode just posted! It's one of the finer traditions we have on the There Will be Books podcast. We draft a baseball team comprised entirely of authors. Tolstoy at center field, Dumas at first base, etc. Pictured are selections from my Historians team.

At first I was bummed because the first half of the book is just a history of the move west BASED on some of the women's diaries. However, once I started reading I was just captivated. It's actually quite amazing that anyone made it West!

I thought the trek from NY to CO in a U-Haul towing a car with 2 cats during a pandemic was hard enough, but if we had to take everything apart to cross a river by raft...Yeah, I'd still be in NY 🤣
