Crime and Punishment | Fyodor Mikhailovich Dostoevsky

Pickpick

I honestly thought I'd bail on this one, but it blew my mind! Brilliantly written, wonderfully etched characters, so much to ponder upon...I wish I had read it sooner. I would have loved to participate in the buddy read but it took me almost two months to finish! 😬
I don't think Raskolnikov looks like that at all but little Rumi seems intrigued. 👶

Gezemice I love Dostoyevsky. I think he is the most brilliant psychologist. And yes, he was supposed to be a young man. And, so cute - although quite precocious 😊❤️ 6y
Cinfhen Precious 6y
BiblioLitten @Gezemice I agree! Even the minor characters like Rodya's mother were superbly portrayed. I hope to pick up 6y

BiblioLitten @Cinfhen 😊👶💜 6y
batsy Wasn't it just a brilliant book 💜 And adorable little Rumi is precocious, indeed! Starting young on the Russian classics 😁 (I'm so curious about that edition... Is it by an Indian publisher?) 6y
sudi I'm about halfway through this and i'm loving it 😊 6y
BiblioLitten @batsy it's by Rupa publications. Their classic library collection. I'm not too fond of it though. My son has been seeing Raskolnikov's face for two months everyday so he's pretty used to him and bites him when I'm not looking.😂 6y
batsy Thanks! And that's too cute about the biting 😂 6y
BiblioLitten @sudi I know! He introduces characters such as Razumihin, or Luzhin and there's never a dull moment. 6y
sudi @BiblioLitten agree, i put this off for many years and i'm glad i finally got to it. 6y
RohitSawant How adorable! 💜 6y

Great Tales of Terror | Edgar Allan Poe

For classic #horror, here is my old copy of stories by Edgar Allen Poe. I have a more complete edition, but this one certainly qualifies as an #uglycover / #worsecover! Much to my surprise was the bookplate inside. I have absolutely no recollection of it. #maylovesclassics

LeahBergen I love that bookplate! 6y
ValerieAndBooks @LeahBergen it‘s so old, it has my maiden name 😊! (edited) 6y
Zelma That bookplate is hilarious! 😆 6y

sammisho This is beautiful...odd cover for this book! I need it! 6y

tournevis I don't remember Lady Godiva was a character in this. My memory isn't what it used to be. 🤪 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Kalalalatja I was wrong, yours were great, this cover is the worst! 😱#worsecover (edited) 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa I just checked out the list in the link, they are classic paintings, but that‘s just so so wrong.... 6y
Betty @Riveted_Reader_Melissa @tournevis didn't realize they were classic paintings. Looks like someone combined Open-domain classics with classic paintings to create kindle versions to make $$$$ (edited) 6y
ReadingSusan Ha ha this is hilarious!! 6y
Kalalalatja @Riveted_Reader_Melissa why would a publisher ever do this to P&P??????? 😱 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Betty Exactly, two free in the public domain items, and combined them to make money. @Kalalalatja Betty‘s right, all those classics are free in the public domain, so no publisher. If you think this is bad you should see the list and look at Northhanger Abbey or Oliver Twist😳 6y

tpixie @tournevis lol. @betty Vixen ?? Ha! 6y
BiblioLitten What in the!!! @tournevis Lady Godiva it is😁 6y
tournevis @BiblioLitten It's a classic painting, but it has nooooooothiiiiiiing to do with the book. Even with my failing memory. 6y

The Bell Jar | Sylvia Plath

This novel, a painful account of clinical depression that mirrored the author‘s own before her suicide, sparked anger and criticism when the 50th anniversary edition was released years ago. This is certainly a #worsecover for the book. 🙅‍♀️
#litsyclassics #maylovesclassics

MrsMalaprop I have this edition too. Yes, ridiculous cover! 6y
Lizpixie @MrsMalaprop I‘m sorry! This was the only edition they had at my local bookstore🙏 6y
TrishB Yuck cover!! Downplays the contents so much. 6y

MrsMalaprop Ha ha @Lizpixie Not your fault 😜. It‘s because you bought it that I have now read it 😁👍. 6y
Kalalalatja Sometimes I wonder if the cover designers even know what the books, they are designing for, are about 🤔🤔 6y
AshleyHoss820 I‘m trying to figure out how this image could relate to the book and I can‘t see it...I think @Kalalalatja is right! 😊 6y

This cover is definitely not as horrid as some of those I have seen posted today, but it‘s my least favorite classic cover from my collection.

#maylovesclassics #litsyclassics #worsecover

Chrissyreadit This is a book I only remember sections of. But those few sections made up for the parts I did not love. 6y
JazzFeathers It doesn't look too bad, actually. I've seen things that you humans... 😨 6y
sprainedbrain @JazzFeathers 😉 Definitely not bad, just not my favorite. Maybe because I‘m a hardcover kinda girl and this is my old paperback from college. 6y
sprainedbrain @Chrissyreadit same here... maybe a reread is in order for me! 6y

Which is the #worsecover? I think I have to go with the Woolf.

#litsyclassics #maylovesclassics
@Sarah83 @Bambolina_81

TrishB They are both hideous!! But the Woolf worse - can you imagine what she‘d have thought of that! 6y
ephemeralwaltz Definitely the Woolf omg😨😨😨😨 6y
Tanisha_A Woolf one! Ugh! 6y
See All 27 Comments
Rachbb3 Woolf wins, but the King one isn't far behind. 6y
Kalalalatja The King cover looks a bit like Voldemort 🤔 6y
readordierachel @TrishB I'm sure she's turning over in her grave! 6y
RohitSawant Wow... The Woolf cover without question. 6y
readordierachel @Rachbb3 The Woolf one is more offensive but the King one is weirder. 6y
readordierachel @Kalalalatja It does! 😆 6y
readordierachel @rohit-sawant Right?? Ugh. 6y
youneverarrived I can‘t believe that‘s a real cover for the Woolf one 😳 6y
monkeygirlsmama Dislike both covers, but dislike King‘s more. 6y
readordierachel @youneverarrived it came from the interwebs, so I suppose it could be a fan cover or something? Either way... 6y
readordierachel @monkeygirlsmama It's just so bizarre. 6y
elizabethlk Those are both awful but the Woolf one is definitely worse. My favourite bad cover will always be this one though. https://goo.gl/images/ZhWJqV 6y
jdenslow Tough call, but I think the World one is worse b/c the King cover sort of evokes a '70ish vibe, which fits the novel. 6y
BarbaraBB The Woolf is really ridiculous. Would the designer have read the book?! It is almost as stupid as yours, @elizabethlk 😂 6y
LeahBergen That Woolf is horrendous! 😂😂 6y
merelybookish Ah... definitely the Woolf! 6y
vivastory The Woolf! 😬 6y
readordierachel @elizabethlk That is hysterical. It's like they had am AI come up with it 😆😂 6y
readordierachel @jdenslow Good point! The King is at least slightly on brand. The Woolf is just nonsense. 6y
readordierachel @BarbaraBB I cannot imagine that someone who actually read a book by Virginia Woolf, any book, would create that cover. 6y
readordierachel @merelybookish @LeahBergen @vivastory I think we have a consensus 😂😂 6y
BiblioLitten Yikes😫 Woolf deserves way better. 6y

I don‘t mean to step on anybody‘s toes, buuuuuut..... I‘m not really a fan of these Penguin Classics covers, but in general and especially these Austen covers. And Penguin normally publishes really stunning books, but this series, or what you‘d call it, have some of the #worsecover(s) out there, in my opinion.

Please don‘t hate me 😅

#MayLovesClassics #LitsyClassics

BookaholicNatty Agreed!!!! ❤️❤️😂😂📚 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa I‘ve got to agree, they wouldn‘t be my first pick either. 6y
AlaMich Which is why I went out of my way to seek out the library copy of the Penguin Classics Deluxe Edition of Pride and Prejudice, my current read. https://www.penguin.co.uk/books/176780/pride-and-prejudice/ Even if I am only reading a borrowed copy I want it to look pretty! 😉 6y

DivineDiana I like them! 🙂 6y
Kalalalatja @DivineDiana I‘m sure lots of people do! I‘m just a bit biased when it comes to covers - I‘m not really a fan of having real or real-looking people on them, if that makes sense 😄 6y
Kalalalatja @AlaMich that really is a great cover! I love those Deluxe editions 👌 @BookaholicNatty @Riveted_Reader_Melissa I‘m glad I‘m not alone! 6y
DivineDiana It does. They are evocative of the period and beautiful to me. “To each his own.” 🙂 6y
Rachbb3 I just ordered them because of the covers! No haters here! If we all liked the same thing how boring Litsy would be. 😉 6y
ephemeralwaltz Yeah.... Just no. 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @DivineDiana They are very evocative of the period, and yes to each their own. Just not what I‘d pick. (edited) 6y
BarbaraBB They are really boring indeed, especially when you see them all together. 6y
sprainedbrain I‘m not crazy about them either! 6y
erzascarletbookgasm They‘re not that bad, but certainly there are waaaayy better covers to choose from for Austen fans 😊 6y
PickwickPlockPlock I like them, but it's like one of those 'one is not like the others' puzzles. They couldn't find a portrait for Emma? What, was she busy? 6y
Kalalalatja @PickwickPlockPlock I will admit, that might be more due to my researching abilities 😄 I just picked the first I could find, but they have some different versions of each of the books, I believe 😄 6y
PickwickPlockPlock @Kalalalatja I like my explanation better 😂 6y
Kalalalatja @Rachbb3 so true! And I definitely get where you are coming from @DivineDiana with the period. For me, like @erzascarletbookgasm says, there are just so many more exciting covers out there 😄 6y
Kalalalatja @sprainedbrain @BarbaraBB @ephemeralwaltz give me a Folio Society or a Clothbound edition any day! 🙌🙌 6y
batsy I love the Penguin Classics editions for reading, especially for the supplementary material they include. But I agree that some covers can be really dull, and the Austen ones in particular are a little blah. 6y
Moray_Reads They're just a little dull and uninspired. "Girl in muslin? Done." 6y

Dracula | Bram Stoker

I thought my covers for #worsecover were bad, but after seeing all the others I would only call them mediocre 😄
Both were published by Heyne, a german publisher that used to print unauthorized (by the authors) ads for Maggi soups in fantasy books (Terry Pratchett, Iain Banks...). No kidding, they even added sentences to segue into the ads.

#litsyclassics @Sarah83 @Bambolina_81
