I can't believe it's almost the March #BookSpin draw! New to the list this month are the tagged and Sabriel. So far, I've been keeping up with the BookSpin draw but haven't gotten around to the Doubles.

This book started really well with a compelling story and whimsical characters but the narrative slows and we endure long critiques of philosophy and religion.
I don't think it's aged well either, it's pretty sexist - which I suppose is typical of the time period.
I just felt like it went from a exciting and mysterious read to just plain dull.
It's also WAY to long, which made it tedious to get through and I was reading the uncut version.
“Love is that condition in which the happiness of another person is essential to your own.“ --Robert A. Heinlen, “Stranger in a Strange Land“.
Damn, I am actually glad I‘m done with this book! What the hell was that man on when he wrote this? Did you know that several of the members of the infamous Manson Family were big fans of this novel? That might be a red flag, you think?
I‘m almost finished with this, thank Foster!! I cannot believe this is so highly touted as a “masterpiece “!! Basically this is Heinlein preaching about how women often ask to be raped ( no I‘m not kidding), how the solution to our world‘s problems is simply having group sex and starting a new religion! Pure crap!!
I am posting one book per day from my extensive to-be-read collection. No description or reason for wanting to read the book. Some are old and some will be new. Don't judge me - I have a lot of books.
Day 309

This is my entry for #ChunksterChallenge2021 and the books your intimidated by challenge for #ReadHarder2021. Also my first attempt for #BCF21
I chose this one not because the size intimidates me (although it is a chunkster at just over 500 pages) but because the author really upsets me so I‘ve never finished it. Also, the person who told me about Heinlein passed away last year, and that complicates my feelings on this novel.
@Amiable
I have finally finish reading this book. Had to take several breaks but I did like the book. It will make you think.
A good day for finishing a book.
Jubal should not have been surprised when Mike announced one breakfast that he was leaving. But he was surprised and, to his greater surprise, hurt.
Just got started in this book. Not what I was expecting but I am totally enjoying it. Thank God for summer reading. it would never have made it on my list if not for the challenge.
Reading in the sun today...temps in the 80s. Currently visiting with my boyfriend‘s family in PA. I‘m enjoying this book but it‘s not a fast read. I get why it‘s a classic of the genre.
Plane reading. Flying to Philadelphia to meet my bf, whose father passed away last week. Air travel feels a bit strange right now.
Starting my new book club book tonight. Thankful that my neighborhood used book store is opened up again, and I was able to find a copy of the book I needed to read next!

Thanks for the tag, @CindyMyLifeIsLit
I did not like this book. So sexist, made me cringe in many places. I also found the story dull and skimmed most of the last half. Not for me. I won‘t be reading anything else by this author.
Another re read for my sci-fi bookclub.
I really like this book!
Could not get into this and I really wanted to have it under my belt. I have read other Heinlein books and had no problem. There are so many other books, I just couldn‘t put more time toward it. 😩
One of my favorites. Of all things he predicted televangelism in this one. #sciencefiction #Heinlein
#BookMail Pt2 The 4th in the Penguin Modern Classic SciFi series is Heinlens novel about an Earth boy raised on Mars. After the Third World War, Earth sends a manned ship to Mars but loses all contact with it. 25 yrs later, Valentine, who was born onboard & raised by Martians, returns to Earth with psychic powers & is at first viewed with fear but becomes an almost cult-like figure starting his own religion.👽 #TheChild #StarTrekSummerMay
This book was the first step I took in my sci-fi journey 2 years ago, so it holds a special spot in my heart!
I thought this was an epic journey which questions everything about our current social structure from the perspective of a true outsider. I loved following Michael through his earthly adventures and the implications it made of life thereafter.
P.S. I finally found the edition i wanted in a used bookstore after 2 years of searching!!
"Love is that condition in which the happiness of another person is essential to your own."
Sometimes I zip through IT tasks without a care; other times I feel like a #stranger in a strange land. I‘m about to throw my work computer out the window, so I‘m too frustrated now to keep butting heads with this #20things request. (I‘ve enjoyed reading everyone else‘s, though!)
So here are a few things:

#ASpacemanCameTravelling #winterwonderland Valentine Michael Smith is human but he was born and educated on Mars. He‘s coming back to Earth......
My experience with Heinlein has been mixed. Honestly the title is maybe my favorite thing about this story of the first human from Mars. It started off well but morphed into a kinda 70s free love thing...

“If a male and a female each loves the other, it is almost a certainty that they will also feel physically attracted—in which case, if they choose to do something about it, the safest arrangement is contractual marriage.” - Robert Heinlein, in a letter to a fan

For some reason #maneater reminds me of Stranger In A Strange Land. Although it was a toss up with The Girl With All The Gifts. #octoberxfiles

This was actually my first ever scifi novel and It was brilliant. Twenty years ago a space shuttle lands in mars and all contact with the crew is cut and they are presumed dead. Forward twenty years and when the next crew arrive on mars they meet Michael, a human, son of two previous crew members and since brought up by Martians. When mike is brought to earth for the first time it's a media circus and Mike has to learn the human ways and culture.
Every single person should read this book and learn to grok.
This cover is definitely not as horrid as some of those I have seen posted today, but it‘s my least favorite classic cover from my collection.
#maylovesclassics #litsyclassics #worsecover
I was surprised at how much I enjoyed the first half of this book. It was just all around fun to read. The second half really dragged for me, though. I guess you could say I just didn't grok the second half. Regardless, it was great and worth the read on its status as a classic alone.
1. Stranger in a Strange Land ... Planet of the Apes ... Brave New World
2. Zork
3. Motley Crüe ... Quiet Riot ...
4. Breakfast Club ... The Outsiders ... The Lost Boys ... Beetlejuice ... Back to the Future ... Footloose .... Gremlins ... Princess Bride ... OMG SOOO MANY?

I found it, once again, like many novels of its day, to not hold up to time‘s judgment. The sexism alone made me squirm. And it makes me wonder about the strange adolescence of books, where time either condemns them to infamy, raises them with excuses on high, or drops them into obscurity.
Getting caught up on #ReadingResolutions: Another Penguin Galaxy edition (I think at this point I only need Neuromancer to complete my collection), the illustrated Neverwhere (my fourth edition of this book, soon I‘ll have a whole shelf made up of Neil Gaiman books), and assorted other #red books to round things out.
Okay one more from the engagement shoot. I like to think that when I eventually finish writing my novel my author picture will look something like this. Tagged is my (somewhat problematic) favourite science fiction novel of all time, and also the book I‘m holding. 💖
This is one of my husband‘s favorite books. I‘m currently reading it but he doesn‘t know it, which in turns limits me to reading it only when he isn‘t home or at my work during lunch.
Day 23:A Book📖when I need a moment-In my opinion this book has always been just the perfect👌🏼mixture of things to make you stop🛑, take a moment, & take things in. It‘s the kind of book that doesn‘t take itself too seriously & neither should you regarding the book or yourself for that matter😄. Stop 🛑, Smell the🌹🌹, or set them on🔥-in the end happiness is what you make of it😁😉 #SurvivingDecember #BookTherapy #PhotoChallenge #Day23
“Jealousy is a disease, love is a healthy condition. The immature mind often mistakes one for the other, or assumes that the greater the love, the greater the jealousy—in fact, they‘re almost incompatible; one emotion hardly leaves room for the other. Both at once can produce unbearable turmoil—and I grok that was your trouble, Ben. When your jealousy reared its head, you couldn‘t look it in the eye—so you fled.”

Just a few #redbooks that are close at hand #decktheshelves @Tiffy_Reads @JoeStalksBeck
This was first science fiction book I ever read (way back in the 1970s) and it‘s still my favorite.
