This One Summer | Mariko Tamaki
A 2015 Caldecott Honor BookA 2015 Michael L. Printz Honor BookEvery summer, Rose goes with her mom and dad to a lake house in Awago Beach. It's their getaway, their refuge. Rosie's friend Windy is always there, too, like the little sister she never had. But this summer is different. Rose's mom and dad won't stop fighting, and when Rose and Windy seek a distraction from the drama, they find themselves with a whole new set of problems. One of the local teens - just a couple of years older than Rose and Windy - is caught up in something bad... Something life threatening. It's a summer of secrets, and sorrow, and growing up, and it's a good thing Rose and Windy have each other. This One Summer is a tremendously exciting new teen graphic novel from two creators with true literary clout. Cousins Mariko and Jillian Tamaki, the team behind Skim, have collaborated on this gorgeous, heartbreaking, and ultimately hopeful story about a girl on the cusp of childhood - a story of renewal and revelation.

⭐️⭐️⭐️ I, personally enjoyed this graphic novel but for it being a YA book, I don‘t know if teens would really like it as much. The characters were more middle school age but the maturity level of this book is much higher. It‘s left me a bit confused, but overall, I thought it was good.

Read this for Banned Books Week. Wasn‘t crazy about it. Not even quite sure who the target audience should be. I would think adults would appreciate it more than teens. Just not my thing I guess.

I thought this was a good story. Illustrations were okay. It was a story of a girl who goes to the cabin with her parents for the summer. I absolutely loved her friend Windy (best character in the novel hands down). The parents fight constantly which depresses the girl and she obsesses over a guy working at a store. Ending was interesting (neither good nor bad). All in all an okay read.

#bbrc #teenangst not appropriate for middle grades
I picked this one up not knowing what to expect. The beginning g seemed to appeal to those middle graders and growing up, but then the whole issue of sex, babies and miscarriages came through. Over all it was a good book.

The art is very pretty, and I appreciate that the text doesn‘t shy away from dealing with tough subject even though the main characters are young, but this one fell flat for me. There‘s nothing really wrong with it, but there just wasn‘t much that was memorable for me.

This One Summer by Marino Tamaki is a Caldecott winning book that was published in 2015. This story is about a girl who goes to Awago beach every summer since she can remember. Wendy is her summer cottage friend since she was five and they always hang out when she is there. She is constantly asking her mom to go swimming or to put her feet in the lake water. Her mom and her dad are having a rough patch together and Wendy is taking it hard.

I‘ve had this one on my shelf for awhile. It was good- but I wasn‘t blown away or anything, which I kind of expected to be, based on other reviews. But it did make for an interesting look at young girls on the cusp of becoming young women, and how that impacts all parts of their lives.

Friends Rose and Windy have spent every summer on Awago Beach for years, but this summer is different. The girls seem to be growing apart, Rose‘s parents are fighting more often, and small town drama envelopes the beach. This coming-of-age graphic novel conveys all the changes of summer perfectly in a beautiful monochromatic palette of blues that complement the text wonderfully.

I‘m giving this a pick, but I can‘t really make up my mind about it. The artwork is 4⭐️ for me, but the story is about 3⭐️. The story felt a bit fragmented, and while it definitely depicts growing up and friendship between girls, it left a bit too much unsaid for my taste. Maybe it is my high expectations that are getting in the way of me completely loving this book 🤷‍♀️

But thank you @erzascarletbookgasm I‘m glad I finally got it off my tbr!

mrp27 I completely agree. The art was fantastic the story not so much. I was disappointed in this one. 1y
2BR02B @mrp27 the story was a little thin in my opinion. I would have appreciated a bit more complexity, even though it was middlegrade/YA. 1y

It‘s a typical teenager story. You have one reliable good friend, problems at home, a guy whom you have a possible crush on; mix all the issues together, and it‘s a walk down the memory lane 😅 I love the depiction of summer in Awago beach 💕 This book triggered the itch to book a trip to Bali right away

Wonderfully captures the feeling of summer and the preteen dialogues feel realistic. The monochromatic graphics are mesmerising. Some heavy, important issues are highlighted- parental and family problems, depression, friendships, preteen crush, teenage pregnancy. Maybe I‘m not the target audience for this, it doesn‘t give me the ‘feels‘, although I have admiration for it. Interesting read.

🏖A sensationally beautiful yet tragic story about the significant & lasting effects of serious trauma & loss.
🏖Told via lens of a kid who quietly stews in loneliness, frustration, & confusion as she begins to grow from a kid into a young lady.
🏖Subtle yet powerful exploration of how trauma affects not just the direct individual, but everyone around them with whom they‘re close.
🏖Purple-tinged monochromatic palettes fit narrative excellently.

Taking a break from heavier novels to start this GN.

It‘s about a couple girls who visit Awago Beach every summer for happy family shenanigans. But this year is different as one girl‘s parents won‘t stop fighting. To avoid the dysfunction, the girls venture out on a small adventure where they encounter a boy who‘s gotten himself in quite a bit of trouble. While helping him, they end up discovering secrets & heartache unexpected.

#booksandvinyl a sunny album with a song called summer mood on it for this pairing. The artwork in this is beautiful and it deals with a lot of big issues. It's a mood comic, kinda meandering but good at getting a feeling going. It's only a so so because it just wasn't my sort of thing and I review on how I feel. This would be a great for a teenager, that's the target audience and I wish it had been around when I was a teen.#readingwomenchallenge

A beautiful novel that accurately captures the friendship between two preteen girls who vacation on the same lake in the summer—all the growing up drama, giggles and discovery. It feels very slice-of-life, so sort of meandering in the beginning, before reaching a climax that felt too dramatic to me in relation to the rest of the book. The beautiful art and nostalgia of childhood summer kept me attentive throughout. Can‘t wait for summer weather~

At first this book gave me a ton of anxiety because the general sense of unease and tension coupled w/ the main character growing into her adolescent sexuality made me super worried there was gonna be some sort of sexual trauma, but thank god, it didn't go there. This isn't a book where a lot "happens", it's a book that works to create and explore a feeling and a time, and it knocks it out of the park! ⬇️ cont in comments

Natasha.C.Barnes It definitely makes sense this book won an award--it's absolutely brilliant at portraying the physical experience of a particular character in a moment--how they interpret what's around them, what they're hearing, what's drawing their eye and attention. There is an amazing sense of being in the present and the book doesn't overlay anything that happens with a kind of commentary from someone who knows better-it allows it all to stay implied. 5⭐️ 2y
