House of Leaves
House of Leaves | Mark Z Danielewski
Years ago, when House of Leaves was first being passed around, it was nothing more than a badly bundled heap of paper, parts of which would occasionally surface on the Internet. No one could have anticipated the small but devoted following this terrifying story would soon command. Starting with an odd assortment of marginalized youth -- musicians, tattoo artists, programmers, strippers, environmentalists, and adrenaline junkies -- the book eventually made its way into the hands of older generations, who not only found themselves in those strangely arranged pages but also discovered a way back into the lives of their estranged children. Now, for the first time, this astonishing novel is made available in book form, complete with the original colored words, vertical footnotes, and newly added second and third appendices. The story remains unchanged, focusing on a young family that moves into a small home on Ash Tree Lane where they discover something is terribly wrong: their house is bigger on the inside than it is on the outside. Of course, neither Pulitzer Prize-winning photojournalist Will Navidson nor his companion Karen Green was prepared to face the consequences of that impossibility, until the day their two little children wandered off and their voices eerily began to return another story -- of creature darkness, of an ever-growing abyss behind a closet door, and of that unholy growl which soon enough would tear through their walls and consume all their dreams.

I keep thinking of this. If the manuscript never existed & Johnny imagined everything. Maybe Navy, Karen, & the 2 kids are Johnny's interpretation of his own family? After all, his dad was a part of the military & flew & maybe was a part of the Navy. There is mention of one a baby who born with holes in its brain where the mother had to take it off life support. Maybe this baby was Johnny's sister & this was what drove Johnny's mom insane?

Holy crap! This was a masterpiece that has little to no sex or violence, but it is perhaps the most frightening and unsettling work I have ever read.

This is only the 2nd book i have ever read that has scared the ever loving living hell out of me.

If the house and documentary never existed like how at one point Johnny suspects when he goes searching for the house, perhaps everything has just been a delusion and the manuscript he compiled never existed in the first place, rather it could be an extent of his mental illness and a delusion.

In the following letters, Johnny's mother admits to her delusions and how there was never a new director like how she thought. Also, some of the letters she writes when she is spiraling out of control show her going insane. The director even writes Johnny and says he is having to change her meds. Eventually, Johnny's mom hangs herself in the closet and the book ends.

If her delusions are heriditary, did the documentary of the house really exist?

But is she really being abused or is she imagining it? After all it seems her being committed was due to delusion. There is even a letter where Johnny supposedly visited her, but she does not remember the visit & she urges Johnny it was an imposter he visited with. As her paranoia grows, she devises a coded message in her letters where the 1st letter of each word spells what she intends to say, as expected the reader will need pen & paper handy.

Through a series of letters, we see how Johnny's mother was institutionalized before his father's death for mental illness. In the letters, which are only from her perspective, we see how Johnny has gone from foster home to foster home. As he grows older, he visits her. As the letters progress, his mother's director encourages the letters, but when a new director takes over, she expresses the he & staff are invading her privacy & abusing her.
