Lullaby
Lullaby | Chuck Palahniuk
Ever heard of a culling song? Its a lullaby sung in Africa to give a painless death to the old or infirm. The lyrics of a culling song kill, whether spoken or even just thought. You can find one on page 27 of Poems and Rhymes from Around the World, an anthology that is sitting on the shelves of libraries across the country, waiting to be picked up by unsuspecting readers. Reporter Carl Streator discovers the songs lethal nature while researching Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, and before he knows it, hes reciting the poem to anyone who bothers him. As the body count rises, Streator glimpses the potential catastrophe if someone truly malicious finds out about the song. The only answer is to find and destroy every copy of the book in the country. Accompanied by a shady real-estate agent, her Wiccan assistant, and the assistants truly annoying ecoterrorist boyfriend, Streator begins a desperate cross-country quest to put the culling song to rest. Written with a style and imagination that could only come from Chuck Palahniuk, Lullaby is the latest outrage from one of our most exciting writers at work today.

"Old George Orwell got it backward. Big Brother isn't watching. He's singing and dancing. He's making sure you're fully absorbed. He's making sure your imagination withers...He's making sure your attention is always filled. And this being fed, it's worse than being watched. With the world always filling you, no one has to worry about what's in your mind. With everyone's imagination atrophied, no one will ever be a threat to the world."

This book was definitely interesting. Sometimes I felt like I was losing interest and then something sucked me back in. It‘s weird. But that‘s Palahniuk‘s style.

Does anyone else sometimes literally 'judge a book by its cover' and have substantial success? I hate to admit it but other than suggestions and classic reads, I've found some of my favorite books based solely on the intriguing cover art. I'm curious to see if anyone else indulges in this otherwise taboo faux pas for lack of a better description😂😶

wanderinglynn I‘ve bought a book solely on the cover before. But what usually happens for me is that the cover will catch my eye, then I read the synopsis & if the synopsis sounds good, I‘ll buy it. 9mo
Shelby_Q Oh absolutely. If the description isn't as eye-catching then i won't get it but it usually turns out okay😊 9mo

When I finish a book and my first thought is, "that was $&%# up", I know I read something special. Lullaby is a dark comedy about a journalist and a real estate agent who set out to destroy all copies of a book of childrens' poems because one of them, when read aloud, kills the listeners. They travel with a Wiccan and a bioterrorist, and learn along the way that they can trust no one, especially themselves.

I received my lovely #FeedAReader swap package this week. The bookmarks are gorgeous and I'm looking forward to trying some of the recipes in these books. My coworkers are especially excited for me to try the Tim Tam Balls recipe from @LapReader 's grandmother. We have a potluck next week so this will be happening. Thank you for such thoughtful gifts!!

LapReader I have a question Andrea. How do I make the cornbread to go with the Cowboy Casserole? I am making it for the kids on Tues night and am not sure what else to put with it. Also did the Tim Tam balls work out?xo 2y
AWahle @LapReader I forgot that cornbread is an American thing! Oops! Do you have cornmeal? Our boxes usually have a recipe. Or I could email you one, but you'd still need cornmeal. A salad goes well with this meal. 2y
AWahle @LapReader The Tim Tam Balls were a hit at my work potluck! My hubby hates coconut, so I rolled half of them in crushed pretzels. 2y
LapReader Is cornmeal the same thing as polenta? My email is allissanalder@yahoo.com.au That would be great mate. 2y
LapReader Great idea about the pretzels. I will have to try it. 2y

Helen was a little too close to the lady from Invisible Monster‘s for me but I really liked the way this book attacked duality. I wish Palahniuk would‘ve done more with the middle chapters rather than just car ride car ride car ride. Overall, this story was nuts and the prose daunting.

Big Brother isn‘t watching. He‘s singing and dancing. He‘s pulling rabbits out of a hat. Big Brother‘s busy holding your attention every moment you‘re awake. He‘s making sure you‘re always distracted. He‘s making sure you‘re always absorbed. He‘s making sure your imagination withers. Until it‘s as useful as your appendix. With everyone‘s imagination atrophied, no one will ever be a threat to the world.

I haven't read much Palahniuk but I thought the portion of the Jenny Lawson title- 'A funny book about horrible things' could be used for pretty much any Palahniuk title. This one had several lol moments- you can imagine the possibilities with a character finding a 'culling song' where saying, reading, or even thinking the words has the power to kill someone in his proximity. Thanks for the giveaway @Clwojick ! 🙂 #furiouslyreading

Reggie My favorite of his is Haunted. If you can make it past the first story of the bus driver, your good. Lol 2y
Billypar @Reggie Thanks for the recc- I'll have to check it out, but definitely in between meals 😂 2y

In true Palahniuk fashion, all the characters are hot messes. But, enjoyable hot messes that you end up liking and empathizing with. This book is pretty dark, as far as what the lullaby actually is and does, and what has brought all these characters together.

"Every generation wants to be the last. Every generation hates the next trend in music they can't understand. We hate to give up those reins of our culture. To find our own music playing in elevators. The ballad for our revolution, turned into background music for a television commercial. To find our generation's clothes and hair suddenly retro." Man, this book is endlessly quotable.

I've enjoyed Chuck Palahniuk books before but this one wasn't what I expected. I must be honest and say I was a little disappointed.
I thought the synopsis of the book was amazing...

Chuck Palahniuk did not disappoint with this book. The revelations about big brother scattered throughout are timely, and I would recommend reading this with an open mind. Definitely weird, but a must-read...especially if you liked Fight Club.

Shortstack @jessicarenee how do you feel about his newer works? I feel like he's been going downhill. Fight Club 2 felt more like an implosion and now he's releasing a coloring book?! My favorite books of his are all his early ones. 3y
jessicarenee @Shortstack well I haven't read anything by him that I haven't liked. (Haven't read fight club 2 yet) I am more likely to re read his older stuff than the newer though. And I read about the coloring book too haha 3y
