Fourth of July Creek
Fourth of July Creek | Smith Henderson
52 posts | 80 read | 129 to read
After trying to help Benjamin Pearl, an undernourished, nearly feral eleven-year-old boy living in the Montana wilderness, social worker Pete Snow comes face-to-face with the boy's profoundly disturbed father, Jeremiah. With courage and caution, Pete slowly earns a measure of trust from this paranoid survivalist itching for a final conflict that will signal the coming End Times. But as Pete's own family spins out of control, Pearl's activities spark the full-blown interest of the FBI, putting Pete at the center of a massive manhunt from which no one will emerge unscathed. In this shattering and iconic American novel, Smith Henderson explores the complexities of freedom, community, grace, suspicion, and anarchy, brilliantly depicting our nation's disquieting and violent contradictions. Fourth of July Creek is an unforgettable, unflinching debut that marks the arrival of a major literary talent.

A social worker with just as many issues as his clients tries to help several children get out of unhealthy living situations, while he searches for his own missing daughter. I thought this was going to be a thriller, but it‘s definitely more family drama. It‘s dark with references to drugs and alcohol, abuse, prostitution, and extreme poverty.

SamAnne I was mixed on this. I grew up in a rural community where this story could have taken place. And lived in north Idaho not far where the stories and incidents he is basing the story on took place. When I know the back story it often give me a more critical eye which is unfair. But if it seems melodramatic, it isn‘t. Sometimes when I tell stories from my childhood community it just sounds over the top. But it was real. 5y

The story of a social worker in rural Montana in 1980, and the family of survivalists he finds living in the wilderness. He tries to help--while his own life is falling apart. This book is about paranoia, freedom, institutional limitations, forgiveness and finding the fortitude inside you to go on after you‘ve experienced tragedy. It is not an easy read. But it‘s compelling and breathtaking and the writing is stunning.

Super dark story about a social worker who gets wrapped up in the dark paths of some of the people he is trying to help. It shows how his dedication to his job winds up effecting his personal life and the lives around him inadvertently. A little slow in parts, but very hard to put down.

I have rather mixed feelings on this one... it‘s beautifully written highlighting the West in the 1980s. But it‘s a bleak storyline- and the feral child reference isn‘t very accurate, though there is plenty of the abuse and hardship you would expect from a DCFS worker as the MC. It drags a bit and doesn‘t end as satisfyingly as I had hoped.... #Montana

Bailedbailed

I bailed when the social worker protagonist ran into another SSW he had only met once before in an office at a grocery store and they hooked up for the night. Pointless. I'm good with the irony of a *ucked up SSW trying to help *ucked up kids, but this was plain dumb and I couldn't suspend my disbelief. Really disappointed bc the storyline about the pinecone eating separatist family could have been interesting. Photo w/o jacket bc I'm annoyed.

I just can't read anymore of this book. I'm a bit disappointed too because it has a great rating here on Litsy. I don't really like the authors writing style, I'm getting characters confused and at times not really knowing which "he" the author is referring to. Then there's these weird "interviews" with the main character's daughter.....I don't know. I just gotta bail.

PurpleyPumpkin Sometimes, bailing is what ya gotta do! 7y
Cinfhen Hated this book! 7y
GoldenGirl @Cinfhen Glad I'm not the only one! It had a 100% here on Litsy, but I just couldn't get it. I think the story is probably good, but it got so cluttered with Pete's issues. 7y

A profound, heart-wrenching story about lost souls and broken families, about the kind of folks who fall through the cracks of society—and the individuals who dedicate their lives to helping them. At times I was reminded of the sinister, gritty vibe that I loved about True Detective. It falters a bit in scope, but Henderson's ambition ultimately pays off, allowing him to explore the complexities of poverty, fear, ignorance, freedom, love and hope.

I hate to bail on this, because it is really well-written, but it is a brutal read. I'm halfway through it and just can't take another 250 pages of this right now. Time to move on.

SharonGoforth @Zelma Yes, I think the timing is a big part of the reason I bailed. If it were up to me, I would have waited to read this, but it was selected by my book club some time ago. The writing is really good, so maybe I'll finish sometime. Just not right now. 7y
