After I Do
After I Do: A Novel | Taylor Jenkins Reid
From the author of Forever, Interruptedhailed by Sarah Jio as moving, gorgeous, and at times heart-wrenchingcomes a breathtaking new novel about modern marriage, the depth of family ties, and the year that one remarkable heroine spends exploring both. When Lauren and Ryans marriage reaches the breaking point, they come up with an unconventional plan. They decide to take a year off in the hopes of finding a way to fall in love again. One year apart, and only one rule: they cannot contact each other. Aside from that, anything goes. Lauren embarks on a journey of self-discovery, quickly finding that her friends and family have their own ideas about the meaning of marriage. These influences, as well as her own healing process and the challenges of living apart from Ryan, begin to change Laurens ideas about monogamy and marriage. She starts to question: When you can have romance without loyalty and commitment without marriage, when love and lust are no longer tied together, what do you value? What are you willing to fight for? This is a love story about what happens when the love fades. Its about staying in love, seizing love, forsaking love, and committing to love with everything youve got. And above all, After I Do is the story of a couple caught up in an old gameand searching for a new road to happily ever after.

Interesting approach to a second chance romance but I like that it didn't follow a typical story arc and it kept me guessing- will they/won't they. The epistolary email drafts were a fun add-in as well.

If this weren't my book club's current selection, I would have bailed. I found the main character quite unlikable - and the end chapters made me roll my eyes more than once. Had high hopes for this one, but alas it wasn't for me!

This is the only TJR book I‘ve read so far that I didn‘t like. Lauren was pretty insufferable, which made it hard for me to empathize with her during her marriage problems. Her husband Ryan wasn‘t much better. Lauren‘s family was the best part of the story, especially her siblings. Photo is of the decoration we put out every year. Happy Halloween 🎃 👻

9-30-23: My 88th finished book of 2023! Lauren and Ryan, met at 19 in college, and never left each others sides. Now, 9 years in their marriage, they have hit a wall. They just don‘t seem to like one another anymore. So they decide to take a year off. A year to figure out if they still love one another or if they should call it quits. That year is a busy one full of self discovery and family bonding. Marriage is hard.⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️📖#️⃣8️⃣8️⃣💖

Lauren and Ryan have reached a valley and decide to take a hiatus in their marriage. In the meantime she strengthens her relationship with herself, her family, and friends. Lots of truth and real life to this one…I loved it!! And I think everyone was happy I just had to finish.

This book punched me square in the gut. An incredibly raw exploration of marriage & separation. There were so many moments that made me contemplate my own life & relationships. Incredibly emotional without feeling sappy & strips the idea of long-term relationships down to bare bones. It focuses on how we have to allow the relationship to grow & change as we do and gives so many little moments of pause .I really appreciated how honest it felt.

After 11 years together a couple decides to split for a year to see if at the end they feel their marriage can be saved or if they should move on. This one didn‘t really work for me. They were so horrible to each other in the beginning that I couldn‘t imagine them making it work so I read everything that followed from that lens. I liked the supporting characters so much more. Everyone seems to love this one so I think it is just me. #authoramonth

I love TJR, she‘s my favorite author right now so I‘m going back and reading all of her books. When this book started I was unsure because it felt predictable, and maybe it kind of was but her writing is so good that it didn‘t feel predictable. I also listened to this one and it‘s read by my favorite narrator, Julie Whelan. Book #5 in 2023

This book is really good. Marriage is hard & messy sometimes. Do you give up or work thru it? This couple decided to separate for a year and decide what to do after that. The book follows Lauren as she goes thru all the emotions of the separation, but we also hear from Ryan. I really didn't know what either of them would do. I laughed & cried. Great book!

Lauren and Ryan have reached a point in their marriage where they have lost their bearings. They have become complacent. The way they find themselves again was so personal. They wrote their own path learning there is no set way to go about a marriage.

My second TJR read and wow, this was a phenomenal book! It‘s an honest portrayal of what goes on in a long-term relationship — realistic like no other romance book I‘ve read, and still so inspiring.

“All that matters is that you open your heart, give everything you have, and keep trying.” Highly recommended.

Ok, TJR is now officially one of my favorite authors. This story is about a couple, Lauren & Ryan, who have been together for 11 years and have been steadily growing apart. They agree to separate for one year with no contact to see if their marriage is worth saving. I‘ve gotten little else done today because I had to finish this book. She captures the everyday aspect of relationships so well, and the characters are very relatable. I absolutely ⬇️
