The science of understanding trauma and the brain… I find myself understanding my knee-jerk, unsaid/unexpressed reactions, thinking, “That‘s just your lizard brain talking.” I listened to this book on Scribd, and loved the conversational format between Oprah and Dr. Perry. I wish they delved more instances of trauma, I felt left wanting more, but this was a fabulous read. A lot of people said this is a book everyone should read and I agree!

2. Yes!! My (future) mother-in-law too, we have a great relationship and share books with each other all the time!
3. Good pacing, good plot line, and a good ending! Some books were ALMOST a 5 star and then the ending docked it a star or half of one!
4. Good health, a roof over my head, and good friends!

Thank you for the fun Wednesday start @Eggs ! ☺️

I wanted to love this book, but it just felt very flat in its storyline. Perhaps it was because I was listening to the audio version, which I do only here and there, but it just lacked the thrill I was expecting. Some points were exciting, and I enjoyed the different characters in Emmanuelle‘s village, but it just wasn‘t what I was hoping it would be!

Out of all the books I‘ve read over my lifetime, this is the first where the ending gave me chills. Throughout the diary I just kept thinking how intelligent Anne was at such a young age, how well she wrote and relayed the complex happenings of the war and the adults‘ conversations about it. I‘ve been thinking all day how she would have changed the world had she survived. This is definitely a pick for me!

Even though I‘m of Italian ancestry, I didn‘t have a lot of exposure to fundamentally “Italian/Italian-American” things growing up due to feuds that go back before I was even born, so I‘m a sponge for these books. Of course, I knew about the Italian horn, the malocchio, etc. (left), but there was more “magic” than I was expecting! A little too much “how-to” for me, I wasn‘t really interested in that, but I still enjoyed this very much!

Dragonfly in Amber was my favorite book in the Outlander series when I first read them. I‘m remembering why that as I read through again for the #OutlanderReadAlong — the styles (and scandals) of French court, the dinner parties, the seedy streets of 18th century Paris, the magic and superstitions…it still reigns supreme and I don‘t think other installments will dethrone it. I‘m enjoying it so much I‘ve forgotten my other reads. 😅

Continuing the #OutlanderReadalong ! I‘m remembering why I fell in love with this series in the first place and I‘m able to take my time with it this go-around. I first read Outlander in between semesters in college and didn‘t want to waste any time so I feel like I buzzed through it! Taking my time is letting me pick up things I never noticed and reading them in succession helps me not forget anything! ☺️

The last time I read Outlander was in 2013/2014, and I‘ve been meaning to reread since then but never got around to it until the #outlanderreadalong was announced by Random House. I‘ve managed to find some of the peace I‘ve been looking for since I started retreading. I know what happens but it‘s still as exciting as the first time, and I‘ve managed to catch details that I didn‘t notice nor realize were foreshadowing events in the upcoming books.

⭐️⭐️⭐️ — I give this three stars because it started out extremely well. I found out more about my own introversion and quirks I have that are actually common introvert traits. But when it started going into how to manage being an introvert, that half of the book just wasn‘t for me. A lot of those tips I‘ve figured out long ago, but it may be helpful for those that have not!

3.75⭐️‘s — Happy New Year! I watched the movie on Netflix last night but it left me feeling INCREDIBLY unsatisfied with how many plot gaps there were. So naturally I turned to the book and spent the first day of 2019 reading it! It played out MUCH differently. I got some answers that I wanted but I didn‘t get anything more on the creatures that I was hoping for. 😤 so that‘s what made it shy of 4 stars for me. Overall, the book is worth the read!

I really, really enjoyed this book. It‘s a very different story about a woman diagnosed with a debilitating illness that renders her unable to stray too far from bed and she acquires a pet snail from a visiting friend. Throughout her illness she observes the snail and it becomes a new focus for her. Much of it is composed of research she found later on as she improved, and her observations make it a pleasant, relaxing read.

2. 8th grade had an 18-book reading challenge and I clocked it at 25 😅
3. Fahrenheit 451
4. Catcher in the Rye
5. I feel like a lot of the books can‘t be appreciated until we‘ve come out of school. But if I had to choose, I think “The Book Thief” is an excellent book that really got my attention when I read it in school.

Mandigolightly I think a lot of them, we just don‘t have the context to appreciate yet. Though I had an amazing teacher the year we read Of Mice and Men, and he really solidly explained to us about a lot of the symbolism and escalation in that book, and it got my critical thinking flowing for sure 6y

This is another book I want to love but I‘m just not feeling it so far. I do notice that, oftentimes for me, classics don‘t really kick in until around the middle of the book so I have high hopes! And I hope it happens soon because Mr. Collins is getting on my last nerve. 🤣 #GARBingo

theresidentromantic I think, for Pride and Prejudice to work you have to really feel Elizabeth. You have to like her humor and stand with her against Caroline, Collins, and her mother. There aren't very many other sympathetic characters to stand with and I think the book gets really boring if you're not invested in Lizzie finding her happiness. 6y
LiteraryinLawrence @theresidentromantic I agree. I also have a soft spot for Mr Bennet, though he‘s not without his flaws. 6y
theresidentromantic @LiteraryinLititz I love Donald Sutherland's Mr. Bennett, he's more affectionate in tone with Mrs.Bennett. I feel like book Mr.Bennet's regrets over his marriage are made too clear for me to believe they're happy. 6y
ajshrk90 @theresidentromantic @LiteraryinLititz I‘m actually only sticking with it at this point because of Lizzie LOL! Mr. Bennett‘s commentary cracks me up, too, but I agree, I do not get the impression that he and Mrs. Bennett are happy. 6y

Every ounce of me wanted to be able to praise the Handmaid‘s Tale, but I just can‘t. I really didn‘t like how this was written: the lack of context to tell me what was going on, the lack of differentiation between memories and the present, the lack of damn quotation marks. There were a lot of places I just didn‘t give a fig about, and I felt myself skimming as I got towards the end. I really wanted to like it, but I just couldn‘t. #GARBingo
