Kill the Next One
Kill the Next One | Frederico Axat
An audacious psychological thriller where nothing is what it seems. Ted McKay had it all: a beautiful wife, two daughters, a high-paying job. But after being diagnosed with a terminal brain tumor he finds himself with a gun to his temple, ready to pull the trigger. Then the doorbell rings. A stranger makes him a proposition: why not kill two deserving men before dying? The first target is a criminal, and the second is a man with terminal cancer who, like Ted, wants to die. After executing these kills, Ted will become someone else's next target, like a kind of suicidal daisy chain. Ted understands the stranger's logic: it's easier for a victim's family to deal with a murder than with a suicide. However, as Ted commits the murders, the crime scenes strike him as odd. The targets know him by name and possess familiar mementos. Even more bizarrely, Ted recognizes locations and men he shouldn't know. As Ted's mind begins to crack, dark secrets from his past seep through the fissures. Kill the Next One is an immersive psychological thriller from an exciting new voice.

It starts a bit slow, but worth the build up…Ted is just a regular guy ready to end his life due to an inoperable tumor…or is he? What happened when your reality becomes tangled with your fantasies? Where is the line between sanity and that other place and how much of who you are has been lost and how much has been imagined? A good read once it gets going and then Federico never lets up not until the absolute last word.

A terrific thriller filled with twists and turns, this book definitely did not go where I thought it would. It starts with Ted about to kill himself when a mysterious man arrives offering him a spot in a suicide club: if he kills a murderer and another man who wishes to die, someone else will kill him. I never really knew what was real and stayed up way to late last night finishing this.

vivastory I think this one is really underrated. It's one of my favorite thrillers of the year 6y
Soubhiville That sounds kind of fun, if murder and suicide can be considered fun... lol. 6y

? I'm a little bemused by the concept of a vicious opossum, and overall I didn't feel like it was unmanageable WTFery, but it is an interesting, original psychological thriller about a serial killer... Maxwell Hamilton as the audiobook narrator is clear, but he is really too young and "bright" sounding for this, and his character differentiations were barely passable. Four stars for the book; 2-1/2 for the narration

? @Guildedearlobe gave this an A+ rating at the beginning of the year, so I put it in my TBR queue. It looks like a twist on the "Pay It Forward" idea, but with killing! Narrated by Maxwell Hamilton, a young California actor and new-to-me voice.

vivastory This is one of my favorites of the year 7y

I also finished this one today - what a ride! At first it didn't make a whole lot of sense and I almost bailed, but I still have a hard time bailing and in this case I'm glad I didn't! Once it started making a little more sense, it was really a page turner! Opossums are much maligned, though :(

Reggie Yeah, that scene at the birthday party with the little girl, the possum in the tire swing, and how he's whipping everyone into a frenzy, I was like wtf is going on???!!!! Lol it was a great book, though. 7y

When I watched Kill Bill for the first time, Uma has this seemingly never ending fight at a teahouse. There was a moment when I thought, "Man, we're really close to kungfu overkill." Thats how I felt about the twists in this book. They never stop. The last couple pages almost feel like a huge ?. But ask me if I ever not watch Kill Bill when I catch it on tv. I can't deny the genius of this book. Amazing, and a huge pick!!!!

I'm enjoying this book immensely but am finding myself say the long winded "whaaatttt!!!??," every couple of pages. There is this completely surreal birthday party scene with a possum in a tire swing, a 3 y.o. girl, and overreacting adults being whipped into a frenzy by a crazy guy. If it was snowing outside my window, the snow would have started to fall in slow motion because of how tense this scene was. Lol This book is kind of nutso.

Meh. I feel like the book could have used a better structure than simply Part I, Part II, Part III, etc. It didn't tie well enough for me.. But I expect a lot out of my bouncing narratives with unreliable narration.

I can almost guarantee that whatever you have been TOLD about this book is only a small fraction of the reality of this book. For the first half of this book I had no idea what the hell was happening, and then the second half had me doubting what was happening. I'm not sure I always found that enjoyable, but I still liked it overall. Pick it up if you like thrillers.

Meh. Sooo many chunks of telling instead of showing -- I don't mind a bit of that but this would go on for whole chapters so it felt like you were reading the author's plot outline instead of a novel. There was probably a decent story here but it all felt flat and the twists were all a bit anticlimactic.

It‘s like a mindfucked brain had carnal relationships with an equally corrupted cerebrum and gave birth to a mutant of whatthefuckery. At no point did I feel like I had a grip on the reality of the novel until the very end, at least until the final sentence which sent my Parietal Lobe reeling. Yet, this was no esoteric stream of conscienceless literary hoity toity snorefest. It was highly accessible with characters you grew to care about.

Guildedearlobe This is an edited smidge of the review I wrote about this audiobook. Because I've actually started blogging on my bloggy thing again. 7y

#TBRtemptation post! The Argentinan's book is translated from Spanish (reading challenge category?). Ted McKay had it all: beautiful wife & kids & home & job. Then he's diagnosed with a terminal brain tumor. He's about to blow his brains out when a man shows up with a deal: kill 2 men, one a criminal & one who also has a tumor, & someone will kill him. Murder is better than suicide, no? Ted kills. Then it's his turn... #blameLitsy #blameMrBook 😎

This thriller was very well constructed and the writing was good, it just wasn't quite what I had expected. I had picked it up looking for a quick, straight forward thriller and this was more of a twisty psychological drama.

So. Many. Twists. I promise you have no idea where this will go after reading the beginning: Ted gets interrupted while about to take his own life by someone with an odd proposition that seems to know way too much about him. Ted complies and quickly realized nothing is as it seems. Have fun guessing what is going on!
