A heartbreaking look into colonialism. Set in 1950's Kenya and told from the perspective of a young white woman, this book does not shy away from the harsh realities of a people fighting to reclaim what has been taken from them. I listened to the audiobook, which was pretty good, but I think I might have actually enjoyed the print version better, as I found the narration to be rather bland.

This book made it onto my #TBR 100% because of the cover. I didn't pull the trigger and buy it when I first saw it, but it stayed on my radar. Eventually, I picked it up with a credit from #Audible. I listened today while reorganizing my kitchen. It was a bit slow in the beginning, but at the start of Chapter 13, I'm invested.

Excellent historical fiction about the Mau Mau uprising in the 1950s in Africa. Doing some deep diving and learning more. Good read but be warned, the characters will drive you mad with frustration!! Especially the father!!! Also warning that this is intense and brutal in places. The racism is maddening

🖋Do you always read the author‘s note?
I will be honest and say, I don‘t always love author‘s note. Sometimes I view a book and certain way and it changes it a bit. Or, I read to first and it sets the scene for the book which I would prefer to enter blindly. That being said, I love the author‘s note in this book. I love books that have a sliver of truth to them. You can really get a taste for what your about to read and I loved it.

Unexpected Purchase: Sometimes even a trip to Target results in a new book. From the cover to the setting in Africa, this book could not be bypassed.

If I could have read this in one sitting, I would have.
Powerful, unpredictable, and with rich characters to either love or hate.

When all your library holds come in at once does it leave you a little stressed and anxious or is that just me 😲

From the rolling beauty and wildness of Kenya, to the brutality and horror of the political landscape of the era. This was a truly fascinating read about a time and a place I knew little about. From the modern perspective, you cannot help but be outraged with the lack of humanity shown to the people of Kenya, and the dark path that an overzealous belief in white supremacy led them down. Tense and moving.

Set amidst the Mau Mau uprising in 1952 Kenya, this book captures the fear, brutality, and racism of the time. Unfortunately, it is a bit uneven and has a bit of a preposterous twist near the end that doesn't quite fit. Worth a read for the historical aspects, but with a grain of salt.

Oh, I do love novels set in Africa. But I'm tired of the romantic haze cast over colonialism in a lot of them. No more stories where a kind hearted (privileged) white woman is oblivious to the suffering at her doorstep & her complicity with that system of oppression. Since this just came out last month, I am expecting a more "woke" read. Especially since it's a bold choice to plop the main character into the backdrop of the Mau Mau revolt.

Started this last night with the intent of doing intense reading as it's due back to the library tomorrow. Then, I decided I'd stop and wait to get it off Holds. Then, I decided to check its rating on Litsy. 100%. Back to original plan. #currentlyreading #librarylove #speedread #bujotracking🦉

This had a much darker undercurrent running through it than I expected. Originally I thought it might be a predictable story, but it's much more intense. There are plenty of characters to dislike and characters to wish were a bit stronger - but a recommended read! This is for the #LitsyReadingChallenge #SetinAfrica square.

Had to switch to audio when I decided to knit myself a hat this afternoon. On row 15 of 65. Book has just an hour to go. I am loving the story, and the audio is enjoyable. #littenswhoknit #audiobook @penguinrandomhouse will get around to all your posts when I finish the book

Beautiful historical fiction with a stunning setting and memorable characters. The setting of early 1950s Kenya was fascinating with information about the Mau Mau Uprising. This would make an excellent book club choice. There are many characters to go into, many plots to pick apart, and many social issues to discuss. And of course, that ending and the decisions made would be a great discussion topic as well. I received a copy from the publisher.

I really liked her debut (Fever Tree), so I have high expectations for McVeigh's new novel, set in Kenya in the 1950s. I'm starting this later tonight. @penguinusa

A young woman returns home to Kenya after a long absence. There have been many changes since she left. The biggest one is that her father is now involved with a woman from the Happy Valley set. An appearances must be kept up. When it comes out find it and enjoy the story.

I am currently on page 185 and having a hard time putting it down. I might have to watch The Kitchen Toto again after reading this book. This image is from Google and it is a coffee plantation in Kenya.
