The Truth and Other Lies
The Truth and Other Lies: A Novel | Sascha Arango
NEW YORK TIMES NOTABLE BOOK A literary crime thriller with a clever plot that always surprises, told with dark humor and dry wit (The New York Times Book Review, Editors Choice), this brilliant debut follows a famous author whose wifethe brains behind his successmeets an untimely death, leaving him to deal with the consequences.Henry Hayden seems like someone you might admire, or even come to think of as a friend. A famous bestselling author. A loving and devoted husband. A generous and considerate neighbor. But Henry Hayden is a construction, a mask. His past is a secret, his methods more so. Only he and his wife know that she is the actual writer of the novels that made him famous. When his hidden-in-plain-sight mistress becomes pregnant, it seems his carefully conceived faade is about to crumble. And on a rain-soaked night at the edge of a dangerous cliff, his permanent solution becomes his most terrible mistake. Now not only are the police after Henry but his pastwhich he has painstakingly kept hiddenthreatens to catch up with him as well. Henry is an ingenious man, and he works out an ingenious plan, weaving lies, truths, and half-truths into a story that might help him survive. Still, the noose tightens. Smart, sardonic, and compulsively readable, this is the story of a man whose cunning allows him to evade the consequences of his every action, even when hes standing on the edge of the abyss.

This is a modern novel set in modern times, but it has the feel of either an old novel or a modern novel set in old-times. It has an Ira Levin - Kiss before dying vibe to it, which of course, is an old book. Perhaps this is due to it being translated from the original German?
I love the title, but think it is better than the book as a whole.

“The liars among us will know that every lie must contain a certain amount of truth if it‘s to be convincing. A dash of truth is often enough, but it‘s indispensable, like the olive in the martini.”

I didn‘t love this book but it was definitely thrilling and dark. I don‘t usually read mystery/crime books so I think this was my one for the year and I‘ll read another one next year.

Did a buddy read with @Alfoster I liked it, although it left me asking a LOT of questions. I think this will make an interesting discussion for book group this month, and I'll bet mixed like/dislikes. #tink

Suzze @ReadingSusan Oh, she is! Just to her left is my other iPad with the live cam of April the giraffe on it. Every once in awhile she watches as April moves about. 8y

This was a good thriller even with some unanswered questions! There are more lies than truths...and be prepared to wonder if the protagonist is a hero or villain...or both. Certainly worth the read!😀😀😀

Alfoster @Suzze will add more!😍 8y

This book starts off strong, it's fast paced and leaves you flipping pages frantically to find out what happens next. So many questions are raised...If you are looking for a book that ties up all its loose ends this book is not for you. This book will leave you wanting more and knowing you will never receive it, it mirrors its plot in that way and because of that the book is unique and worth the read.

Finished The Library at Mount Char - SO GOOD! But then realized I have 6 days before OverDrive makes me return this one! I'm seeing mixed reviews about it, but I think the story sounds really interesting. Fingers crossed! 👏🤓

ej0728 Good luck. I wasn't super impressed. It was twisty but unsatisfying in the way that you can see the ending coming at you. First half was pretty good though 8y

This was like the weird German love child of The Truth about the Harry Quebert Affair and Fates and Furies. It was so twisted and fabulous.

A super quick read that will keep you hooked through the end. The twists were fun, not obvious but also not super surprising. I was hoping for more answers/information on his background.
