3. No thermostat control in my building - it goes between "I need a sweatshirt" and "Oh no I'm boiling"
4. All weather is reading weather! I do like taking a book to the beach on a hot day though
5. I like curling up with a cup of tea and flipping through my coffee table books - the one tagged, Bibliophile, a big heavy book of Harry Potter art, all fun!

I enjoyed this & got a lot out of it. I expect I‘ll refer to it in the future. It‘s given me different ways of thinking about the story I‘m currently working on, which is good b/c I am a bit stuck. I‘m not a genre writer (this book is geared for them) but I liked a lot of the advice, probably because I agreed with much of it. It will help me be a better editor. My one gripe is sometimes he‘s so clever I can‘t tell if he‘s kidding or advising.

GingerAntics Did you enjoy the part in editing? I didn‘t read that part yet. I have a tendency to get ahead of myself and that can jam me up for the actual writing so I put that part off until December. 6y
jmofo @GingerAntics I did. I skipped some of the writing prompts at the end because I am trying to work on something and I don‘t want to distract myself from that. Much of the editing stuff I already do and agree with. The thing with NaNo is word count, so I think you made a good call there! 6y
GingerAntics The few writing prompts I looked at didn‘t seem to work with my story idea, so I‘ll keep the book around for when I develop one of my fantasy/adventure ideas. 6y
See All 7 Comments
jmofo @GingerAntics the first one I wrote from. I tried to skip it but I kept thinking about it. The others were far more involved, some were straight up homework so those I‘ll save for a rainy day. 6y
GingerAntics The one with the picture and write a story from it or the first one in the back? I couldn‘t get a handle on the photo. The writing challenges through out the chapters did seem a lot like homework. 6y
jmofo @GingerAntics the picture one with the chap with the books and the animals 6y
GingerAntics Yeah I couldn‘t get my head around that photo. I figured I‘d come back to it and I never really did. I looked at it every time I picked up the book, but i could never get a handle on it. 6y

2.5⭐️ I‘ve read just about everything in here I need to read right now. I‘ll reserve the revision chapter for after NaNo. Some of this is very specific to writing fantasy works, which I do not, so I had to take those things with a grain of salt. He likes Campbell‘s whole “Hero‘s Journey” thing, which I do not. I disagree with parts of this and felt disheartened by others. The writing challenges are very specific to each chapter (cont‘d below)

GingerAntics so they cannot be used for whatever you‘re working on or developing. The writing exercises in the back are specific to the fantasy genre, so if you‘re not writing that you‘re SOL. I like my writing exercises to be more utilitarian than Vandermeer I guess. I‘m glad I didn‘t have to read this for a class. I honestly probably would have dropped a class centred on this text before it made just not want to write at all. (Cont‘d below) 6y
GingerAntics This wasn‘t the writing book for me. I did enjoy discovering new authors and I‘m a huge Neil Gaiman fan so I greatly enjoyed his essay. I probably learned more about writing from Neil Gaiman‘s tumblr account that I did from this book. If this is your genre this is probably a great book for you. It just wasn‘t for me. The graphics are great, but their placement got old and then obnoxious fast. (cont‘d below) 6y
GingerAntics I took a few things from this book, but not enough for this book to be worth it for me. I honestly think there are two things from this text I plan to incorporate into my own writing. Again, this may be the text for you, but it‘s not for me. #wonderbook #jeffvandermeer #creativewriting #nanowrimo #notmycupoftea 6y
GingerAntics As reference, I plan to incorporate studying poetry to study concise ways to describe things, and writing your ending then deleting the last paragraph or two to add in a bit of mystery/ambiguity to your ending so readers can infer things for themselves; although, admittedly I am a fan of ending things with a question of two left unanswered anyway, so it might not always be necessary. Total fan of some parts of this book, not a fan at all of others, but I am enjoying discovering new authors to check out. My TBR is growing from various parts of this book (the ones I like obviously).
#wonderbook #jeffvandermeer #authordiscovery #growingTBR

jmofo John Le Carre‘s descriptions can be quite eloquent and surprising. His books are unusual but not in a way the word unusual is usually used for. I am a big fan but he‘s not everyone‘s cup of tea. I‘m still near the beginning of Wonderbook. I never expect to agree with this kind of book completely but I am a fan of vetting your own ideas against others‘. I‘m glad you‘re digging in! 6y
GingerAntics @jmofo I like vetting ideas as well. Ultimately, this book really wasn‘t for me. If I had to take a class cantered on this text I would either drop it or stop writing after the class for a while. I don‘t write fantasy so that could be a factor, but I just didn‘t like this book as much as I wanted to. I‘m glad I gave it a shot, though. On to more development and other authors before November. 6y
jmofo @GingerAntics Hooray! Go get ‘em! 6y

People never understand why I obsess over characters names so much, or why some names keep changing even several drafts in. They don‘t get why I look up name meanings and take such pains to get just the right name for each character. They also don‘t get why I can‘t even start writing unless my main characters are properly named. Neil Gaiman is most definitely my spirit animal. #neilgaiman #americangods #jeffvandermeer #wonderbook #nanowrimo

CocoReads Yep, names are important 6y
Bookwomble In Tolkien's initial draft of The Hobbit, Gandalf was called Bladorthin, whilst Thorin Oakenshield was called ... Gandalf! Getting the right name is important 😊 6y
GingerAntics @Bookwomble oh wow, that would have been an interesting change. The whole thing would have been totally different. Names really inform the role and personality of characters. The mind boggles at what could be if those two names handed been changed. 6y
See All 14 Comments
GingerAntics @CocoReads some people just don‘t seem to get that changing a name came take a minor character and make them a major character. I don‘t get writers who are just like “eh their names don‘t really matter to me.” 6y
CocoReads @GingerAntics exactly—I mean, I can‘t have a badass alpha male character named Waldo, after all. 🤣🤣 6y
GingerAntics @CocoReads exactly!!! 6y
Bookwomble @CocoReads Heinlein's character character Waldo was badass in a nerdy, evil corporate way! 😁 6y
GingerAntics @Bookwomble @CocoReads it probably depends on the story you‘re trying to tell. 6y
Bookwomble Definitely - context is everything. 6y
CocoReads @Bookwomble that may be (Heinlein isn‘t my thing) but all I can ever picture is Van Halen‘s “Hot for Teacher” video, or the “Where‘s Waldo?” books. 6y
CocoReads Context definitely makes a difference! 6y
Bookwomble @CocoReads Ha,ha! I 😁 And, yes, about Heinlein: I like his earlier stuff, but he does get very creepy/sleazy later on. 6y
GingerAntics @cocoreads @bookwomble I was thinking about Where‘s Waldo as soon as I heard the name, too. I‘m sure it‘s a nice name, but I think those particular books have cut that name off from serious consideration for many people. Of course, now I‘m thinking I must write something with a character named Waldo, just to say I did. lol 6y

Am I supposed to feel more self conscious of my writing after reading this? I‘m beginning to think my writing sucks and I should just pack it in now before we even get to November.
#nanowrimo #wonderbook #jeffvandermeer #mayday #houstonwehaveaproblem

CocoReads No, you‘ll be fine! 6y
GingerAntics @CocoReads I‘m thinking I may just read certain parts of it that are things I want to focus on and see if that helps. This raging debate about exposition is evil vs exposition is great, and all this madness is starting to get me all turned around. 6y
CocoReads @GingerAntics I think sometimes the writing books can give too much advice. You just need to go with your gut and just write. That‘s what a first draft is for anyway—you can tighten things up later. 6y
See All 9 Comments
GingerAntics @CocoReads that makes a whole bunch of sense. Thanks for that. 6y
CocoReads @GingerAntics anytime! I know I‘ve gone through that stage as well and been “talked off the ledge” too 6y
Texreader What are you writing?? How exciting!!! 6y
GingerAntics @Texreader nothing yet. I‘ve decided to do National Novel Writing Month. It‘s not until November. Right now I‘m just getting ideas organised and getting to know my characters. I promise not to kill off any beloved characters. ✋🏻 6y
JazzFeathers Like @CocoReads said, just don't think about style for now. Style doesn't belong to first drafts! First write that draft down, then you'll have all the time you need to make the story as good as possible. I'll be doing NaNo too. I'm Celebcuen on that site, in case you need one more buddy 😉 6y
wanderinglynn You‘ll be fine! Like others have said, first drafts aren‘t about style. Fist drafts are about getting the story out of your head & onto paper. Besides, there is no one way to write (which is is why there‘s a million books about how to write). For every so-called “rule” of writing, I guarantee I can find a successful writer who broke that “rule.” 6y

I‘ve had this on my shelf for a few years now (a friend in grad school used it to teach under grads creative writing and encouraged me to read it). I figure if I‘m going to do this national novel writing month thing, I should probably try to prepare myself. lol So, here goes nothing.
#wonderbook #jeffvandermeer #creativewriting #nationalnovelwtitingmonth #heregoesnothing

GingerAntics Now if I could just decide which idea I want to explore in November. 6y
wanderinglynn Will this be your 1st NaNoWriMo? 😀 I‘m wanderinglynn on NaNo too. 6y
GingerAntics @wanderinglynn yes, I heard about it from someone on here, possibly you. I remember that it was someone who has the same user name on both. Did you post something about it, or have a conversation about it in the comments of a post a few months back? (edited) 6y

wanderinglynn Quite possibly that was me as I am wanderinglynn on NaNoWriMo too. Welcome! It‘s a ton of fun. 😀 6y
GingerAntics @wanderinglynn it certainly sounds like it. I‘ve never written with a community, so the idea seems awesome to me. 6y
jmofo @GingerAntics I‘m Jessie Mofo on NaNo! I‘m looking for some community too. @CocoReads is involved too, and some other folks. No doubt there will be more posting the closer we get. Welcome and good luck! 🤘 6y
CocoReads I‘m trying to decide if I have the time this November—I‘ve switched jobs and right now my hours are full time plus trying to study for my certification. I think my hours will drop sometime in Nov but I‘m not sure. I‘ll probably sign up anyway even if I don‘t finish. I do think it‘s a lot of fun 6y
GingerAntics @wanderinglynn @jmofo @CocoReads of course now that I‘m like “great I need a new idea” I‘m over here thinking about this thing I started writing about 10 years ago now and thinking “what if his dad hadn‘t died?” Do I have to know what I‘m writing about while I‘m writing it? lol 6y
CocoReads @GingerAntics I don‘t really plan mine out—I start with a vague idea and let the characters choose their way. Which, I admit, sometimes gets me into trouble but I say write what comes, you can always edit later 6y
wanderinglynn No. I never plan—I‘m what they call a pantster (writing by the seat of my pants). Some years I barely have an idea. I just start writing on Nov. 1. 6y
wanderinglynn @CocoReads Even if you don‘t get to 50k, you will still generate some good stuff. Several years I haven‘t “won”, but I still had some good writing, good ideas, plus the creativity just helps spur other areas of my life. ☺️ 6y
CocoReads @wanderinglynn this is only my second November. I did both the April and July camps though and really had a great time 6y
GingerAntics @CocoReads @wanderinglynn oh, it‘s only 50k. For some reason I thought it was 100k. Okay that makes me feel better. I have two different, fairly random ideas. Reading Wonderbook has actually made me start thinking about changing up the other story entirely. I‘m pretty sure that‘s cheating, though. 6y
CocoReads Not cheating at all! 6y
GingerAntics @CocoReads technically it IS a different story. 😏🤔 Same characters, totally different story. (edited) 6y
CocoReads That‘s all that matters. 6y
GingerAntics @CocoReads alright, then GAME ON!!! 6y
jmofo @GingerAntics The hope is to write. Starting fresh makes it easier to start fresh next time but it isn‘t a requirement. I‘m working on a story I started in 2011 and have been working on this year. Some years I have a whole new story, other times, I‘m just putting time in with an old project. @CocoReads Good luck! (I thought you had more years since you were such a good coordinator!) (edited) 6y

I was reading in the shade before work. I know I am a bore and I am fine with it but it is nice to be reassured once in a while! 💜

GingerAntics I all the annals of human history, I‘m sure we‘re rewriting stories that have already been told. Knowing that does sort of take the pressure off, doesn‘t it? 6y
jmofo @GingerAntics totally! I think criticism that starts and ends with I have seen this before is of limited usefulness. I used to put so much pressure on myself to be original. Now my goals are to be sensitive and inclusive and myself. 6y
GingerAntics I think that‘s the only option. Yeah, you‘ve read this before. Duh. I think it‘s the telling of the story in your own way that makes it interesting and intriguing. I‘m trying to see what page this is on. I definitely haven‘t gotten there. (edited) 6y
jmofo @GingerAntics sorry for the delay. It‘s on page 36 6y

#AbbaInAugust Day 4: Perfect for #IWonder, this gorgeous title breaks down elements of the fantastique, the anatomy of the strange, the skeletal system of the bizarre with gorgeous art one can drown in, luscious writing that allows me a taste of the marvelous, and allusions to more novelists, books, authors that I am not familiar with. What a treasure trove this book is. My full review here: https://wp.me/pDlzr-8IG

I‘ve read a lot of craft books in the twenty years I‘ve been writing professionally, and I‘ve got to say that this is one of the most useful I‘ve ever come across. It‘s deeply playful and seriously comprehensive. It‘s also quirky as hell, which is especially friendly for writers of fantastic and speculative fiction, but by no means exclusive to any one genre.

I live only an hour from where they have it so I'm a huge groupie, so I had to laugh when my face was part of the image they're using to promote this upcoming year.
