5. The entire novel is based on what Isabelle sees and how she responds. Any thoughts on the reason behind the murder? Any thoughts on how the motive was discovered? #LiteraryCrew #BuddyRead

megnews I was very surprised by the motive. From the beginning I thought he had impregnated her and he killed her to get rid of her and move forward with his advantageous marriage. The scene where they found out the motive seemed a little far fetched and dramatic. 4y

BethM I also agree with @megnews . While I enjoyed the book overall, the ending was rather eye rolling. 4y

CarolineLovesToRead I too agree. The ending felt rushed. I did expect there to be more of a scandal as to why he murdered her 4y

4. Let‘s talk fictional characters. Any favorite characters? What did you think of Isabelle? Gregory? Lucy? Samuel? #LiteraryCrew #BuddyRead

Chrissyreadit I did not love any of the characters- in fact I wanted a deeper connection, but know that would have lead to a longer book. But I‘ve already forgotten a great deal about most of them- because to me it felt like a simplified story with significantly deeper issues under explored. 4y

BethM I agree- I didn‘t feel overly connected to any of them. I honestly found Isabelle a touch too helpless at times. 4y

Librarybelle @Chrissyreadit @BethM Agreed! I never felt connected to the characters, and I somewhat was puzzled by the relationship between Isabelle and Samuel. I like your thought, too, @Chrissyreadit , with this being a simplified story with much more deeper issues that were not quite explored. 4y

Jerdencon I liked Lucy because she seemed loyal but I wonder if in real life of the times she would have had that much freedom. 4y

CoffeeNBooks I agree @Chrissyreadit, the characters and story seemed like they weren't very developed. I liked that Isabelle came up with a way to keep herself safe from Gregory, and I liked her friendship with Lucy. 4y

3. The author writes true historical figures into the plot line, such as Dr Patterson & Mrs Lincoln. What are your thoughts on fictionalizing real people in a book? How well do you feel the author handles these characters?

Looking more closely at Mrs Lincoln, do you think the inclusion of her & her friendship with Isabelle added to the story? Were you aware of Mrs Lincoln‘s story after President Lincoln‘s assassination? #LiteraryCrew #BuddyRead

megnews I love historical fiction about real people. I was aware of Mrs Lincoln‘s situation after Lincoln‘s death. I don‘t know that having her in the story really moved it forward or served a great purpose in the book. 4y

Chrissyreadit I liked having Mrs Lincoln in the story. I did not have more than a peripheral awareness of depression with her. I actually wish there was more character development and engagement through out the story. 4y

megnews @Chrissyreadit if her storyline had been developed more, I would have appreciated the inclusion more. Some historians believe she suffered from bipolar. 4y

Chrissyreadit @megnews the author def included red flags for bipolar. I had no idea about her spending or behavior. 4y

megnews @Chrissyreadit most of what I learn about history is from historical fiction and then I do a little research. I‘ve read a few with Mrs Lincoln. I think I first learned this when reading Mrs Lincoln‘s Dressmaker about former enslaved person Elizabeth Keckley which was very good. 4y

BethM I was not aware of her life, while interesting and enlightening, I don‘t think her character really furthered the story. I think she was written in more as a draw to the reader. 4y

Librarybelle @megnews @Chrissyreadit @BethM I wasn‘t completely sold on the inclusion of Mrs Lincoln. I had hoped there would be a bigger connection between her and Isabelle...there was a potential for her to be a big part of the story, but it seemed to me that that potential was not quite met. I also agree with how awesome historical fiction is to open up exploration of nonfiction and other stories on the same topic! 4y

Jerdencon @megnews I read Mrs. Lincoln‘s Dressmaker too and definitely got a better feel for her there rather than in this book. Here she just seemed like she was infantilized too much. Mr. Patterson seemed a little like an after thought to me. 4y

CarolineLovesToRead I do love when real people are put into fictional stories. I don't however feel that Mrs Lincoln made any difference to the story 4y

CoffeeNBooks I didn't know anything about Mrs. Lincoln's mental health, so reading this led me to read more about her. But, I'm not sure including her in the storyline really added to the story. 4y

2. Mental health and the sanitarium...any surprises by the attitudes about those who stay in a sanitarium? Has any of the stigma attached to mental health changed since 1875?

megnews Not surprised and I think the stigma has changed. It‘s shocking that professionals couldn‘t immediately see through spouses having their wives committed to get them out of the way. 4y

Chrissyreadit I think it was a smart move on her part. I think the stigma today is an incredibly complex issue. There is stigma about it in the general attitude- we have a culture that increases it and no active work to change that. Those most impacted receive services when there is a global impact such as drug addiction- that often can have underlying mental health conditions and is currently supporting great treatment options, but many conditions are still 4y

Chrissyreadit Difficult to receive services for- and mental health is not always covered by insurance- so there is a significant gap in expense and attain ability. 4y

Tattooedteacher I agree that the stigmas has changed but changed not removed. This is a hot topic for me and I honestly don‘t believe there‘s enough being done for those suffering from mental illness. @Chrissyreadit I agree. The truth is that even if insurance does provide for treatment, it‘s often minimal and tight. 4y

megnews @Chrissyreadit I agree she didn‘t have much choice since no one was listening as @Tattooedteacher mentioned. 4y

BethM I agree with @Chrissyreadit and @Tattooedteacher . I‘m not sure she had much other option save for maybe running away with Lucy. 4y

Jerdencon I still think the stigma is there... people are still so reticent to get mental health help because of the stigma attached to it. While I do think there have made, there is still a long way to go. I‘m not sure I would have followed her footsteps but it could see how desperate she was to get away from him. (edited) 4y

CarolineLovesToRead I don't feel she had a choice other than running away and where would she run to and with what money. This was the only way to get away and her mother was never going to believe her. 4y

CoffeeNBooks I think there's not as much stigma as there used to be, but I feel like it's still there. I don't think Isabelle had much of a choice but to go to Bellevue. 4y

Tattooedteacher I‘ve wondered if she was born before her time. She is outspoken with her opinions and attempts to advocate for herself. She doesn‘t seem to buy into the thoughts about how her 4y

megnews I wasn‘t really shocked by it. Women were expected to marry to improve the prospects of their families. I always thought this was mostly the fathers pushing this and was disgusted by her mom‘s attitude. I guess though as a widow security was her biggest concern. 4y

Chrissyreadit @megnews @Librarybelle I was surprised by how gentle it was. All the supports I learned about for mental health were not gentle or kind. I know money then and now makes all the difference in treatment received. 4y

Tattooedteacher I did know a bit about the era and understood the importance of marrying to improve one‘s station. That didn‘t stop me from feeling annoyed that no one would listen to her. 4y

BethM I agree with @Chrissyreadit . I googled this particular sanitarium and I will say it seems like an accurate representation based on what I read. 4y

Librarybelle @megnews @Chrissyreadit @Tattooedteacher @BethM I love reading about the Victorian era, so no surprises for me. Bellevue sounds so different from other sanitariums I‘ve read about, fiction and nonfiction, more humane than some locations. 4y

Jerdencon I too was surprised by the quality of care and the freedoms they were given. My image of a Bellevue is of locked wards and isolation. 4y

Jerdencon Otherwise I was pretty familiar with the time period. 4y

CarolineLovesToRead I was not surprised at how women were to be and act and have a specific "role" in society 4y

CoffeeNBooks Bellevue definitely sounded nicer than I would have expected for that time period. I agree with @Tattooedteacher- I knew what to expect, but it still annoyed me how Isabelle was treated by those who didn't believe her! 4y

so-so

Isabelle witnesses her fiancé do something unspeakable, yet no one believes her. Seeking refuge, she pretends muteness so she can be admitted to Bellevue Sanitarium as she thinks how she can take her life back.

Lots of promise, but I felt the ending was a bit rushed and a tad far fetched. Mary Todd Lincoln is also a character that I think could have been developed more. I liked this, but just an okay read for me. #LiteraryCrew #BuddyRead

I enjoyed this, although I felt like I had to suspend my disbelief somewhat. Isabelle is engaged to marry Gergory, who isn't who he says he is. Her mother doesn't believe her though, and in order to save her reputation and maintain Isabelle's chance of marrying Gregory, she sends her to a sanitarium until she's willing to lie and say she didn't witness what she thought she did.

Chrissyreadit I‘m curious about the characters and want to know more.... I want to know Lucy‘s fiancé, and why Marilla was not looked for and why Isabelle‘s mom is so mean but Father was not... I would have been happy with more information and a longer book. 4y

Crazeedi I finished the book last evening. The story line was intriguing but I though the writing style was a bit simplistic. I would categorize this as a YA book. I liked her relationship to Mary but wish it had been more fully developed 4y

This was a fast read, but had some plot holes for me. They did not stop me from enjoying the story of a young woman, constrained by society and her mother, who chooses to take control of her life via a sanitarium-but I wish the characters in the book were more defined and there was more depth to the story. #literarycrew

If you enjoy historical fiction that takes place in the 19th century and involves a bit of mystery then I would recommend this book. I read this book for a #BuddyRead with #LiteraryCrew so I don't want to give too much away. However, I really enjoyed it and couldn't wait to see what happened.
