Brooklyn's toughest female detective takes on Dallas--and neither is ready for the fight. Dallas, Texas is not for the faint of heart. Good thing for Betty Rhyzyk she's from a family of take-no-prisoners Brooklyn police detectives. But her Big Apple wisdom will only get her so far when she relocates to The Big D, where Mexican drug cartels and cult leaders, deadbeat skells and society wives all battle for sunbaked turf. Betty is as tough as the best of them, but she's deeply shaken when her first investigation goes sideways. Battling a group of unruly subordinates, a persistent stalker, a formidable criminal organization, and an unsupportive girlfriend, the unbreakable Detective Betty Rhyzyk may be reaching her limit. Combining the colorful pyrotechnics of Breaking Bad with the best of the gritty crime genre, The Dime is Kathleen Kent's brilliant mystery debut and the launch of a sensational new series.

I sat in my car for a half hour outside the library trying to finish this one before the library closed the day it was due. It was a bit of a slow start for me but was the story picked up in the second half of the book I was all in and couldn‘t put it down.

I was curious about this one - Kent wrote one of my favorite books, The Heretic‘s Daughter, so I wanted to see how she could pull off a modern day cop novel featuring a woman cop transplanted from New York to Dallas, living with a longtime girlfriend. It works! It‘s gritty yet sarcastic. If you want something a little different from other cop books, read this. #copsong #MusicalNewYear

vivastory I agree, I liked this one 5y
Cinfhen Going to see if #OverDrive or #Hoopla has this one ☝🏾 thanks for the recommendation 5y
Bookzombie I liked this one a lot. I wish she would write a second one. The Heretic‘s Daughter is on my TBR. 🙂 5y

Silly picture but I already used the cover in a previous post 😀.
Entertaining and nicely paced police procedural with snappy dialogue that goes a bit off the rails in the later quarter of the book. While a LGBTQ friendly novel, the main character Betty Rhyzyk is a badass openly lesbian detective, this novel is very white. It's set in Dallas Texas and while there are POC characters they are, with one exception, represented as criminals.

Kathleen Kent‘s first crime novel opens with explosive action, a start that will have you page turning from the get go. Narrated in First Person POV, the lead character is a feisty narcotics cop, Det. Betty Rhyzyk who transfers from Brooklyn to Dallas, from the frying pan to the fire, is tough, flawed, tenacious and anything but your typical cop. In Betty‘s world we get to grips with drug cartels and the criminal underbelly of life in Dallas!

I love Betty as a character. More female main characters should be Iike her. Other than that, this was a very good, very standard mass market thriller, perfect for a rainy day, plane ride, beach read, stuff like that. It became kind of a mess towards the end and had me questioning how this made any sense but the rest made up for it. I‘d absolutely read more if this becomes a series but it‘s not at the top of any list I have.

2BR02B I really dug this one, but... 6y
2BR02B The description of her "operation" gave me nightmares. ? 6y
Jana @2BR02B It was pretty gross. Not the worst I‘ve ever read. But definitely gross. 6y

I haven't really read police procedural fiction in the past, and I think this was an excellent introduction. The writing was brisk and punchy, much like the main character, Detective Betty Rhyzyk. My one quibble is that Betty seemed a bit too bulletproof- I'd like to see her show more vulnerability in later installments.

CW for kidnapping, imprisonment, attempted rape.

Um, a 5'11" redheaded lesbian detective who listens to nineties alt rock?

I officially have a crush on a fictional character. ?

LiteraryinLawrence I heard a great review of this on NPR recently, but it kept focusing on how gritty it was, so I so far haven‘t pursued it. Are you finding it really graphic/violent? 6y
2BR02B @LiteraryinLititz NPR is what put it on my radar, probably the same review. In terms of how violent it is relative to the genre, I don't often read police procedurals so I'm not sure. I personally haven't been shocked by anything I've read so far, the worst being... 6y
2BR02B A woman finding a box containing a severed head on her doorstep. 6y
2BR02B I'm currently just about half way through. 6y
LiteraryinLawrence @2BR02B Thanks! That‘s really helpful... and for me, that occurrence probably means I‘ll avoid it for now. 😕 6y

Wow. Betty Rhyzyk is an amazing, tough protagonist whose self-knowledge and self-confidence drive the narrative. I‘m a sucker for novels about police investigations, and the story at the center of this book by #kathleenkent is gritty and unrelenting and just . . . great! Oh, and Betty‘s relationship with her uncle is my favorite. 😀

Who-ah! Just gulped this down in one sitting. Texas noir? Nope, that‘s Lonsdale to me; this is pure delightful pulp fiction. In the best of ways: kickass red haired Brooklyn (Greenpoint!)policewoman moves to Dallas PD to be with her girlfriend. Faces murder, mayhem, gangsters, crazed evangelical meth dealers, and the pages just flip themselves. A bit gory but nothing stops her.!

Book 5 for #MountTBR- I loved this fast paced police procedural/crime novel. Betty, a transplant from Brooklyn, is a badass narcotics detective in Dallas, TX. I thought that the last 100 pages were a little over the top, but it was still really good. I picked this up at book festival last year and Kent stated there will be second book. I sure hope so. 🤞🏻#LitsyAtoZ #K

Entertaining and fast-paced police procedural/crime novel/thriller. Biting wit. Caustic observations of human behavior. This is a new genre for Kent and while she is successful, I prefer her writing style in The Heretic's Daughter. But for an interesting crime read, it fits the bill; I would read another. #crime #fiction

An fast paced mystery thriller with a kick ass female narcotics detective. Her observations as a TX transplant from the eyes of a Brooklynite lesbian and her interactions with her fellow officers are excellent. This would have been a solid 4 star read except the plot went a bit over the top for me. I hope there is a second book to this series.

A gritty crime novel, with a badass lady cop, Betty, I really enjoyed reading this. Some parts seemed a bit forced, but I would still suggest this to anyone who loves this genre. 3.5/5 ⭐️

Plus, every time I read the name Betty, I kept picturing Betty from the Rat Queens. Besides being tough and loyal, the two wouldn't be more different. 😂

This was a total #BlameItOnLitsy purchase and I absolutely loved it. A Brooklyn born police officer becomes a narcotics detective for the Dallas PD and tries to take down a Mexican drug cartel. It was gritty, it was fast-paced and it begs to be made into a series AND a tv show/movie starring Jessica Chastain. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This book was amazing. I love that Betty is gritty yet realistic, she's efficient but not emotionally cold. I loved that she had a loving girlfriend and a complicated family past. The mystery is chilling and was escalated expertly, pulling no punches. Kent also made me want to visit Dallas because she wrote the city so well, and I have zero desire to ever set foot in Texas. All in all, and excellent read! I hope we see more Betty books!!

Matilda I want a series! 7y

I only picked up this book because I love Kent's The Heretic's Daughter. Normally, I don't read books identified as gritty cop novels. With Kent's beautiful writing, and grittier descriptions of a few heinous scenes, Detective Betty Rhyzyk comes to life. Hard as nails and very tough, she's someone you would want on your side. I surprised myself by how much I enjoyed this. Glad I took the plunge and decided to give this a try.

I love Kathleen Kent. The Heretic's Daughter is a favorite book of mine and I am often trying to push it into the hands of others. The Dime is a departure from Kent's historical fiction and I'm enjoying it! I really hope that this is the first in a series. Betty is a tough and awesome Brooklyn cop who moves to Dallas so her girlfriend can be close to her sick mother. Dallas has all kinds of challenges in store for Betty!

This latest from Kathleen Kent was fabulous! A Texas-based thriller featuring Betty Rhyzyk, a Brooklyn cop who relocates to Dallas and gets caught up in a truly twisted case. The pacing is crazy fast and the plot is oh, so smart and dark. Loved it! It must have been too much for Ninko :) #catsoflitsy

Tough Brooklyn cop transplanted to Dallas so her girlfriend can be close by for her dying mother, Betty has a lot to deal with. Prejudiced family members, hostile coworkers, narc ops that go wrong, civilians dying - great read. I really hope this is a new series.

Love Kathleen Kent (The Heritic's Daughter).
She always comes to Paris when she has a new book out. I'm interested to see what she does with this new-for-her genre, somehow, I think it's going to suit quite well! And it's really fun to have a crime novel set in Big D for once!
